Day 21
[poll id=”97″]
On February 12, O.C. Register editorial writer Steven Greenhut posted an article on the Orange Punch Blog revealing that former State Senator John Lewis, a supposedly conservative Republican consultant, is backing Democrat Tom Daly instead of either of the two Republicans thought to be running to replace outgoing Supervisor Chris Norby. One of those Republicans, Fullerton Councilman Shawn Nelson, is a favorite of the county’s conservative establishment. The other, Anaheim City Councilman Harry Sidhu, also has a following in the OC GOP. Yet Lewis chose to back County Clerk-Recorder Tom Daly, a Democrat who used to be Mayor of Anaheim.
We wrote about this story on February 14 – and since then Red-faced County blog Editor Matt “Jubal” Cunningham, has posted dozens of comments on our original story, defending Lewis’ decision. But Jubal has NOT opted to tell his own readers about what Lewis has done.
Why is Jubal keeping his readers in the dark? Will Jubal’s handlers ever allow him to post this story? It is now February 17 – five days have passed since Greenhut broke this story. When will Jubal post this story over at the Red-faced County blog? The Countdown has begun…
Art and Juice readers.
There is an opportunity for you to present that question directly to Matt Cunningham, aka Jubal, tomorrow morning in Mission Viejo. February Speaker:
MATT CUNNINGHAM
Editor, Red County OC Blog
I don’t agree that Jubal is a shill. Shills are merely trying to scratch out a living by pretending to be customers. Jubal is a whore who is destroying the Republican Party by pretending to champion its ideology. Red County is a facade for lobbyists, and they will take anyone’s money. I appreciate this blog’s exposing them.
Larry,
I can just see Jubal getting beat up with purses at that meeting!
Art.
My only regret is that I will be picking someone up at Ontario airport at that same time or I would attend this event.
Isnt John Lewis a lobbyist with frequent business in foront of the BOS? I think lewis is just protecting his business interests in this one. Aside, Tom daly is not a Liberal Democrat. he is more of a moderate.
#5,
It sounds ike Lewis has a conflict of interest.
Maybe he should stay out of this race?
And a moderate Dem is not equal to a conservative Republican.
im not sure if its a clear cut case of conflict of interest Art. Does Lewis hold any offices or positions in the GOP? if so then he may be breaking some bylaws.
If he is just endorsing a popular incumbent for an office he may be lobbying, then its just good business. Politics is a dirty game in many ways. But it is what it is.
Tom Daly would be the fron runner for that seat over sidhu, galaway,a dn that guy from fullerton.
#6 Art, the whole purpose of being a lobbyist is to get influence on the BOS. That’s not a conflict of interest. OTOH if Lewis wants Daly in there because he thinks the man’s a secure “yes” vote as opposed to Nelson or Sidhu – that’s a major red flag.
The question then is this: is Lewis a lobbyist at the County or isn’t he? If he isn’t then this isn’t an explanation of the endorsement.
Maybe after tomorrow the women Republicans of MV will know.
This shows Mr.Tom Daly is well liked across the party line.
David,
i believe that John Lewis is a lobbyist. I would assume that he would have some business in front of the BOS. It would be unusual if he didnt seeing as how he is a former GOP senator and current inlfuencer in local politics.
Folks.
I think you might be going off track with your comments. Art is asking a simple question regarding coverage by a well known county blogger who is ducking the challenge.
You’re nuts, the lot of you (except DZ).
But thanks for all the coverage, Art! Nice of you considering we ignore you on Red County.
Matt/Jubal,
Good luck ignoring this issue at your meeting tomorrow…
Do you ever stop to consider how much time and energy you devote on this blog to me and Red County? And how ridiculous and obsessed that makes you appear to the average reader?
Matt/Jubal,
I consider it a public service.
I am guessing my readers are OK with it as our numbers have blown up today.
BTW, will you be reporting on your blog the breaking story about the allegations that GOP Assemblywoman Diane Harkey’s husband may have been running a Ponzi scheme? This story is on NBC’s website and newscasts. Get to work Matt!
*Come on now….don’t beat up on our man Jubal…
he actually …has a job!
He has to feed his beautiful wife and kids and…
in the meantime…..”What’s a Democrat?” Aren’t
they just Republicans that have given up trying to make a buck without the help of government?
Jerbal,
In all seriousness this situation is looking like Pedroza has caught you with your hand in the cookie jar. If you are not reporting back to Lewis (and you know you are) about all that is related to Tom Daly then just come out and state for the record that despite the fact Tom is a nice guy, he is not anyone you would now or in the future support. If, on the other hand, the not so subliminal support Lewis has told you you will be giving Daly is what republicans can expect from you in the upcoming race, at least have enough backbone to step forward and admit it. You seem to think that it is not obvious reading the content or lack thereof on your site that you are Lewis’ boy. You could gain a level of respect by cutting ties with Lewis as it appears his days of popularity are coming to a quick end. Get known as John’s boy and you too will be persona non grata. Its your choice.
Larry, Art:
Had a great time speaking to the Capo Valley RWF. No questions about John Lewis and/or Tom Daly.
Oh boy — the power of The Juice in action!! Reminds me of the old question: “If a tree falls in the forest, but no one is around to hear it — does it make a sounds?”
Update from Matt’s presentation at CVRWF’s meeting in Mission Viejo this morning.
I am told that there were over 50 Republican attendees who heard him call Larry Gilbert a liar.
No problem Matt. As I wasn’t there perhaps you can say that to my face and provide specifics of what I allegedly lied about?
He did not address your question Art and only made a comment on sheriff Hutchens future in OC politics.
He admits to having worked for Sen John Lewis and in some capacity for Curt Pringle.
Larry, you might want to get a better source than your heroine Gail Reavis. I didn’t call you a liar. I said that continuing to claim Frank Ury has a conflict of interest related to his municipal wireless is a lie.
Amazing how you report, as fact, your hearsay version of my talk at the RWF this morning — but it’s par for the course.
Time to go — I can only spend so much time with the inmates in the asylum.
Art,
Jubal put up a post about the dan harkey issue today.
Do you guys hear that buzzing? Ya’ll are crazy with a capital RAZY. Jubal does not have to report anything because you say so…..you guys crack me up!
Flowerszzz,
What is crazy is that the editor of the local Republican blog doesn’t think it is worth reporting to his readers that John Lewis has endorsed a Democrat – instead of a conservative hero.
“in the meantime…..”What’s a Democrat?” Aren’t
they just Republicans that have given up trying to make a buck without the help of government?”
Isn’t that just what the Republicans did in the last 8 years? Halliburton comes to mind. Nice kickback from Cheney.
Haliburton wasn’t a Republican. Haliburton was
a “Capitalist Socialist Corporation”….they call it … selling out to the highest bidder. Or better yet…selling out to “cost plus” on every occasion!
There are plenty of those kinds of companies out there. The Carlyse Group comes to mind….but we like a bunch of their players. Confusing when it comes to taking money from the Government..isn’t
it?
FLowerszzz,
You’re kidding right? The fact that a well known conservative and former elected like John Lewis has chosen to endorse a Democrat over a conservative Republican elected is big news.
If a moderate Republican had done something like this Jubal and the other uber righties would be up in arms calling them a “RINO”. I am sure that the Red County folks would be all over it.
The fact that they chose to ignore this speaks volumes.
Boy, I gotta say that this comment thread really highlights the absurdity of rigid, unobjective party loyalty in the first place. If Jubal writes something that is “up in arms”, then he’s simply exhibiting said rigid loyalty, which is bad…right? And now that he hasn’t, that’s a problem?
Seems like a damned if you do, damned if you don’t thing to me.
flowerszzz
You are right. We can post stories about any issue. Matt Cunningham controls his keyboard. However, if you are truly covering political news, and profess to be a major web site for Republicans, this act of omission by Jubal speaks volumns.
As to former Senator John Lewis. He can support whomever he wishes. If some Republicans are unhappy with his candidate that’s a risk he is taking with full knowledge of any backlash.
Jubal.
While I await input from other RWF attendees tomorrow perhaps you can tell us why my name was even mentioned today, especially when I wasn’t even there?
I wonder what Scott Baugh has to say on the subject, not to mention Mike Schroeder!
This one’s not going to get swept under a carpet.
John Lewis is a lobbyist.
He will use his influence with Red County to help Daly get elected. If Daly gets elected, Lewis will have another reason for people “clients” in need to hire him to peddle influence with the BOS.
Nelson’s the only North OC Republican that can help the party get back on track. He’s not afraid to speak the truth, he admits error, and he has been accountable to the tax paying citizens of Fullerton for the past 7 years. He has successfully advocated limited government in Fullerton. Fullerton has been fortunate to have Nelson on the City Council.
“We need an unwavering, extraordinarily focused commitment to an agenda of limited government,” Baugh said after this past Republicans ass whooping election. “When Republicans effectively behave like Democrats, there’s no use for a Republican Party….” http://www.ocregister.com/articles/party-baugh-government-2229174-bush-republican
Red County, shape up or stop calling yourself a web site for Republicans, or at the very least you should let your readers know your that your blog is really more magic and less politics.
OJ Blog Rocks ! ! !
you can tell us why my name was even mentioned today, especially when I wasn’t even there?
Gail Reavis injected it by raising her hand during Q & A, and instead of asking a question, she raised the whole topic of Frank, you and the wireless issue.
If it hadn’t been for Gail, nothing would have been said about you or Orange Juice.
Tony:
You really need to give Art his tin foil hat back. It’s really is hilarious to read the hallucinatory conspiracy theorizing you supposedly serious-minded grown-ups engage in, or trying to dictate other blogs’ coverage.
People come to Red County for opinion and for information they can rely on. The few that come here come either to watch the car wreck, see what lunatic screed has been posted or because they are also members of the League of Extraordinarily Paranoid Gentlemen.
Tony,
It is clear that money trumps all in the world of Red County. While everyone here at the OJ and most of the other blogs do this for free, Matt gets paid for his efforts.
Congrats to him for doing so. He makes money blogging and I don’t. Kudos to him and I don’t begrudge him for earning a living blogging.
However he should just admit it is just about the cash and change the name of his blog to “Green County”.
Matt won’t criticize John Lewis for backing a Dem the way he does other moderate Reeps for not toeing the “right wing” line, because Matt doesn’t want to bite the hand that feeds him.
Matt/Jubal,
“People come to Red County for opinion and for information they can rely on.”
Really? How can they rely on you when you aren’t telling them about this endorsement of a Democrat by your boy John Lewis?
The fact is Matt, the only thing we can rely on is that you are a paid shill for the OC GOP machine. That is a fact you can take to the bank!
“The fact is Matt, the only thing we can rely on is that you are a paid shill for the OC GOP machine.”
Art,
Clearly he is a paid shill for those that pay him, not just the GOP. I doubt the county GOP will be backing a Democrat to replace Chris Norby.
The truth here is that one of Matt’s “sugar daddy’s” is backing a Democrat so he is mum on the issue.
Like I said to Tony, if Matt were being truthful to his readers he would rename his blog “Green County”, because it is all about the money and not the politics.
The fact that they chose to ignore this speaks volumes.
You see, this is what I mean by the habit on this blog of turning absence of facts into facts. I’m not ignoring anything. I say Greenhut’s post, and was going to incorporate it into a 4th District update post I wrote later. But I forgot to include it.
I would ordinarily added it in when I later realized I’d forgotten to include that tidbit, but then Art start this idiotic countdown. Why would I play into one of Art’s silly, adolescent games? Next time I write about the 4th District, I’ll include the Lewis endorsement.
Other than Orange Juice, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an intense concentration of ego and grandiosity where there is so little warrant for it.
Sean and Art:
OK, genuises: who pays me?
You guys are all hot air and lies and no follow through or credibility. Neither of you pipsqueaks would know truth if it ran over you, and than back up over you again.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen such an intense concentration of ego and grandiosity where there is so little warrant for it.”
Matt,
Thats saying a whole lot seeing as how you were a shill for and pal of Mike Carona and the “Little Sheriff”.
Sean is now changing the subject, which is the traditional way he and Art raise the white flag.
Nice debating with you Sean. it’s too bad you and Art run out of intellectual gas so quickly.
Matt/Jubal,
Don’t you work for Scott Graves?
Also, since you are a county commissioner, can’t we just pull your financial report to see who pays you?
Matt/Jubal,
Never mind all that intellectual gas, when are you going to tell your readers that Lewis endorsed a Democrat over a conservative Republican?
Don’t you work for Scott Graves?
No, I don’t.
I’m sorry to intrude an actual fact into your fetid mind, where it will surely die a quick death due to the hostile environment there.
Art, just admit you really have no idea what you are talking about, stop embarassing yourself by making your ignorance apparent with every keystroke, and go to bed. You might actually wake up and be a normal person.
Never mind all that intellectual gas, when are you going to tell your readers that Lewis endorsed a Democrat over a conservative Republican?
Good grief, can you not read? I already answered that question. And it’s not going to be on your lunatic timetable.
Jubal,
You started with the insults long ago on this thread, so what does that say about you and your intellectual gas.
Enough with the bait and switch Matt, try and stick to the subject at hand, your ignoring the endorsement of a Democrat for BOS by a major conservative Republican politico.
All the time spent here throwing juvenile insults at Larry, Art and myself could have been used to inform the readers of “Green County” of this development.
Matt/Jubal,
Face it Matt. There is no good reason not to tell your readers about what Lewis did.
You are a shill for him – just face up to it and move on.
Hey Matt who is pedophile enabler Monsignor John Urell gonna support for Norby’s seat?
You started with the insults long ago on this thread, so what does that say about you and your intellectual gas.
And what — you guys have earned respectful treatment? Get real. When you and Art behave in a manner that actually merits respect, you’ll get it. As long as you act like gossipy teenage girls, you won’t get any from me.
You, Art, Tony and sometimes another odd bizarro toss speculation about as if you actually have any idea of what you speak — when the truth is it is purely your own imaginations run amok.
does it ever occur to you guys how all the time and energy you devote on this blog to moronic posts like this one make you look pathetic and obsessed?
Sean, at least you will try to mount an argument. Art just parrots the same lines over and over again like a minah bird, but with less intelligence.
LOL! Yup. Game over, Sean. You and Art aren’t even a challenge anymore.
Matt/Jubal,
“does it ever occur to you guys how all the time and energy you devote on this blog to moronic posts like this one make you look pathetic and obsessed?”
And what do you think it looks like when you refuse to tell your readers that John Lewis has endorsed a Democrat instead of a conservative Republican? Just look at our poll Matt! It’s not going too well for you, is it?
