Villa Park’s Deborah Pauly is attempting quite the transformation. She is abandoning social conservatives and embracing the promising mantle of a libertarian. Reasonable enough given her history. The problem: Ms. Pauly is crazy to the core. The bigger problem: The switch reveals Ms. Pauly’s true nature, that of a power hungry politician willing to say and do anything to get ahead.
The councilwoman from Villa Park, a city of less than 6000, is infamous. She has a long history of making incredibly stupid and offensive remarks that make life harder for Orange County Republicans. Now, these are not the kind of politically incorrect remarks that you hear about on CNN or MSNBC. Nor is she getting in trouble for merely forwarding an offensive email. Ms. Pauly is constantly finding herself in controversies that make the GOP (unfairly), look absolutely nuts.
In 2010, Pauly was in the news for writing on her Facebook page that applauding Obamacare was “like applauding a mugging or a rape.” As it turns out, this was Pauly in reasonable mode, the tip of the crazy iceberg if you will.
In 2011, her behavior was off-the-charts offensive. Attending a protest at an Islamic charity event organized to raise money for homeless and women’s shelters, she stated, “I know quite a few Marines who will be very happy to help these terrorists to an early meeting in paradise.”
Later that year she announced bizarrely to a group of Garden Grove women that “Democrats are Of the Terrorists, By the Terrorists, and For the Terrorists.” Also around this time, she made pilgrimages to various city councils urging them to adopt resolutions in favor of Arizona’s anti-immigrant papers-please SB 1070, snapping that she was “ashamed” of her Republican colleagues on the Villa Park council for not joining her in that crusade.
WTF… Generally, the liberal media needs to describe at length why a comment is offensive. Ms. Pauly makes the task incredibly easy. All her opponents need to say is: google her.
In 2012, OCGOP Chairman Scott Baugh tried to put an end to the circus by leading an effort that removed the councilwoman from her leadership position in the party. Kudos to Mr. Baugh who stated at the time:
“[Pauly] makes statements out there that I’m constantly having to defend. . . . These are not just my opinions, but they have been brought by dozens and dozens of people that share the same concerns,” Baugh said. “I think at some level as an officer of this body you need to be very careful. You are held to a much different standard by what you say because you represent everybody out here.”
Today the small-town councilwoman is as ambitious and power-hungry as ever. Further, she will stop at nothing in her mission of revenge against Chairman Scott Baugh. To this end, she is attempting a makeover. A few months ago, she approached former consultant Mike Triggs about improving her image. The notion inspired quite the laugh among party insiders. Nevertheless, Ms. Pauly is making an effort to identify herself with the rising libertarian tide in the Republican Party. On her facebook page, she maintains that she is, in fact, something of a libertarian.
But Ms. Pauly can’t stay out of trouble. When I noticed that she had “liked” a page called “Heterosexual Pride” that painted gay people as child molesters, I asked her to clarify or distance herself from the idea. She responded by posting the following to her Facebook (which she claimed came from her “bible study”):
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58
There will always be those who oppose God, His word, His work and His standards, laws and statutes. They will threaten and deceive and intimidate in an attempt to discourage you.
Annoyed, I upped the ante by making my inquiry public. She never denied that she believed all gays were child molesters, just called me a liar. And another Facebook post appeared:
From this morning’s study: “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” – 1 Peter 5:8
“Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7 (Also, see John 8:44 to learn that the devil is “the father of lies.” He does not stand for truth because there is no truth in him.”)
How nice that Ms. Pauly’s bible study supplies her with a convenient series of talking points, which in her own fevered mind she appears to find germane to the discussion.
Ms. Pauly will fail to remake herself. This is because her political beliefs are not the problem. The councilwoman is just plain mean, and she has a terribly hypocritical attitude. In response to my trouble making, she had her cronies threaten me with legal action. This, while she is engaged in a crusade for “Free Speech” in San Juan Capistrano.
Libertarians should run for the hills when they see Ms. Pauly heading in their direction. Likewise, local politicians should not be tempted to accept her aid. She may appear to have grassroots support, but it is not worth it; she will humiliate you.
The subtext of this saga is that Ms. Pauly has shown herself willing to abandon social conservatives in her struggle for power. So I ask them in Ms. Pauly’s own words: “Do you feel sodomized?”
South Park – Gay Scout Leaders
Deborah Pauly is a woman who’s not afraid to say what is true and what she believes in and for that I am proud to say that I am a supporter. Though she may use harsh wording to get her point across, she’s attacking serious issues to the core that other politicians tend to look over or are to afraid to do anything about. In my opinion, we need more politicians with her enthusiasm and dedication to one’s beliefs.
But what has she accomplished? Her personality makes her powerless…
“…she’s attacking serious issues to the core that other politicians tend to look over or are to afraid to do anything about…”
Such as, Jim?
Note to self: Don’t f*** with Daniel Lamb
costa mesa has one of these in wendy leece., focused on revenge for being discarded due to her constant backstabbing and instigations of men vs. women.
Jajaja… never heard Leece compared to Pauly before. Okay, I suppose they both have it in for Baugh … for very different reasons.
Both blonde! = guilty!
I think that there are some similarities between Leece and Pauly — they’re both social conservatives, for example — but Leece is nowhere near as extreme. I’ve heard (though not verified — Vern might know the facts here) that she’s anti-abortion and negative on gay rights, but neither seems to motivate much of her political action. She seems like more of a “good-government” type.
But — prepare for a shock — so, to a lesser extent, does Pauly! I’ve been reading Brenda McCune’s occasional recaps of OCGOP meetings over on OC Political, and often it seems to be Pauly who is making the sensible motion or giving the sensible speech about internal party processes — questioning the too-quick endorsement of Diana Harkey over Mark Wyland being the latest example. That’s not only the noble position — Harkey, really? — but it took guts. Good for her.
I’d like to engage in some “immersion therapy” with Pauly — relentlessly exposing her to some of the many excellent Muslims and LGBT types in our area — until she just accepted that neither group portends doom for America. Then, when she eased up on the “atredhay” and refocused of whacking down the looters among us, I suppose that she might make a decent libertarian Republican.
But not until then.
You’re fantasizing about changing a person’s basic DNA. She fervently believes that this country is for straight white “Christian” conservatives, and everyone else should stay in the corner and keep quiet.
Yes, she has been unsettlingly on the right side in some recent OC GOP disputes, sticking up for Tait etc. I think this is what Daniel refers to as trying to re-invent herself as a “libertarian.”
I think it has less to do with helping Tait, and more with embarrassing Scott Baugh. Also, she will jump at any opportunity to work against Matt Cunningham. Much of this goes back to her failed bid for Supervisor, where she lost big to the Spitz.
Given that every Democrat I know of voted for Spitzer in that race, I wonder if she won among Republicans. Seems likely, right?
Yes, I am — but if it worked for Jeff Goldblum in The Fly, maybe it can work for Pauly too.
I don’t know Greg, I live in the district and I can count the number of Dem households I know of and still have fingers left over.
According to the OC Registrar of Voters “Data Central” — thanks again for the great website, Neal Kelley — the 3rd Supe District has 127,200 Republican voters, 86,192 Democrats, 70,891 NPPs, and about 14,500 others (including the usual complement of AIs who think that they’re registering “independent.”)
That’s a whole lot of Democrats. You wouldn’t want to send them all mailers. (Believe me, I’ve priced it out….)
In June 2012, Spitzer beat Pauly 53,322 to 24,115, with just under 69%. I don’t think that Pauly got many Dem votes, but I could be wrong.
I stand corrected… interesting.
Greg, Don’t let a few “reasonable” stances by Deb fool you. They are probably just personal payback for something. She has serious problems. Deb will always play well to the red-meat crowd of any issue which is sad, because she really is very articulate in her delivery and she could have been a great voice for the Republican Party. Her lose screws have just put her into the crazy high weeds along the side of the road, alienating Republicans and Christians who truly want to make a difference in a real way.
I’m not “fooled” — I’m just noting that, aside from the red meat issues, where I find her repugnant she has been surprisingly reasonable in some important ways. Would she have been that way if she hadn’t been shivved by Baugh? I can certainly believe that the answer is “no.”
I didn’t intend to write a brief on her behalf, just to note something that I found surprising and better than expected. I hope that she keeps smacking around the party’s looters, whether she’s of pure heart or not.
Well said … random person. She IS articulate and it IS sad. I thought she could change, but she convinced me otherwise.
Do—you attack someone who has guts. Nonsense — we have enought Gutless politicians ! Spineless folks no need to apply.
Go get’em Deb !
Jim – you’re back! And you’re still not saying what these “serious issues” are that Deb deals with while other, gutless politicians ignore them.
Is it the danger of Sharia Law? The Mexican Reconquista? The Gay Menace to civilization? The fact that some folks are Democrats? What?
I think that it’s mostly the Gay Sharia Reconquista.
Success!
