U.S. Rep. John Campbell dumps Poizner and endorses Meg Whitman

“Times change, and in the case of the 2010 governor’s race, so do political endorsements, apparently. Just ask GOP Rep. John Campbell of Newport Beach: he’s switched his backing. A few months ago, Campbell issued glowing statement endorsing California GOP gubernatorial candidate Steve Poizner — and this week, the 48th CD representative issued another glowing endorsement statement, this backing former eBay CEO Meg Whitman,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Interesting move.  Campbell says he initially backed Poizner because Whitman was not yet in the race.  Now that she is a candidate, he appears to like her better.

Or is it that Campbell is facing a serious opponent, for once, in Democratic Irvine Councilwoman Beth Krom – and he could use Whitman’s help?  No doubt she will be appearing in his district to speak glowingly of Campbell.

Krom is still in mourning after the sudden passing of her son Noah, 22, when he fell off a cliff earlier this month, in Isla Vista.  My sources in her camp appear to believe that she will continue her campaign against Campbell when she is ready to.

While Krom poses a serious threat to Campbell, he has positioned himself as a critic of the Obama administration’s economic stimulus program, which he addresses in a post on his blog.  I would imagine that he will find an audience for that message in his district.  You can read his other blog posts by clicking here.

Campbell’s pending legislation is fairly Libertarian in nature.  You can read the bill information here.  I like H.R. 17 in particular, “Amending the Rules of the House of Representatives to abolish the Committee on Appropriations.”

UPDATE: Stop the presses!  Red Klownty editor Matt “Jerbal” Cunningham has been retained by the Campbell campaign.  No bueno!

Here is what Jerbal wrote in a recent post:

By the way, now is as good a time as any to disclose that I have recently been retained as a consultant to Rep. John Campbell’s re-election campaign. I wokred with John when he was first running for Assembly in 2000, and I’m proud to be a part of his effort for 2010.

This cannot possibly be good news for the Campbell campaign…
