Overheard at Sunday’s US Open of Surfing at the HB Pier: (from memory)
“Hey, don’t you guys have that crazy Surfing Congressman out here? Dana something?”
“Ah, Rohrabacher – he’s no friend of surfers. Sure, the tub of lard paddles out for a photo-op every couple of years, but look at his voting record.”
“Yeah, remember when the sanitation district was dumping partially treated sewage off the beach right over there at Brookhurst? Dana supported that. And meanwhile he tried to prevent testing the water for bacteria and toxins.”
“That hot lady that’s running against him – Debbie Cook, the Mayor? She’s the one who led the battle to stop that dumping, I heard.”
“Dude, if it weren’t for Debbie Cook this beach we’re standing on would be a mall and a bunch of condos! Forget Dana Rohrabacher, he’s gotta go!”
Then the conversation turned to the waves and the babes so I wandered away, refreshed to hear such well-informed surfers! But they actually left a few things out:
-
DANA SUPPORTS THE POSEIDON DESALINATION PROJECT, which would create a dead zone in the ocean off Huntington Beach, opposed by the Surfrider Foundation.
-
DEBBIE OPPOSES THE POSEIDON PLAN and has fought against it, because of the potential harm it will cause to the ocean.
-
Dana Rohrabacher SUPPORTS DESTROYING TRESTLES, actively pushing for construction of a toll road through the San Onofre State Park, in opposition to SURFRIDER.
-
Debbie Cook WANTS TO SAVE TRESTLES, opposing any construction that might affect the campgrounds, beaches or surf.
-
DANA SUPPORTS UNLIMITED OFFSHORE DRILLING, wanting one more giveaway to the oil companies for to drill along the coast.
-
Debbie Cook knows how toxic that oil spills are to ocean life, birds, and humans, and only supports responsible oil extraction, while emphasizing that it is much more urgent for all of us to begin moving toward a Post-Oil Future.
Well, I’ve been waiting for a chance to share THIS true story I recently heard from a neighbor of Dana’s, who ran into him at the liquor store a couple years ago. You Republicans and fiscal conservatives should like this. After ranting at my friend for a few minutes about immigrants and the Great Global Warming Hoax, he blurted this out, apropros of nothing:
“You know the greatest thing about being a public servant? The pension!” (Dana Rohrabacher, R-Huntington Beach)
So what do you say, surfers, lovers of the ocean, Republicans, conservatives, and everyone else in this district – Let’s get Dana his pension!

Hey Mr. anti-development lefty …so no freeway to the sea? What about development of a Metro Link railway from Santa Ana straight north paralleling the 57 fwy to Pomona/Ontario ? Right now if you want to take rail to Pomona, it’s west to LA’s Union Station, switch trains, then back east paralleling the I-10, not a way to commute to work. A real quandary for a liberal … rip up pristine chaparral and poor peoples homes to lay track? Then again, real men (i.e. conservatives) don’t ride trains to work, like those effete North-Eastern liberals, they drive pick-ups and stuff.
Urgh. This is the worst post I’ve seen in this website in a long time.
Vern, you’re obviously not a surfer. Please stop pretending to be one of us, and please stop lying about what we say or do not say.
great job guys post 1. 2. vern probally was out there talking to michael moore and george soros to get what they think of dana . a nice one sided conversation dont you think .
Why cannot we have the same Medical Plan that Dana R has and will have after 22 years in Congress? How many legislative pieces have been introduced and passed in Congress by Dana R?
How have the citizens benefited by having Dana R as our Congressman for 22 years? Where is the Cost/Benefit Analysis
Milt Dardis
A Goldwater Conservative
SAHS Teacher, I know you’re being tongue-in-cheek and satirical with your “anti-development lefty” and “real men” and “effete liberals” talk, but the other commenters can’t tell because they don’t know you.
So I’d better just keep the record straight and remind everyone that Debbie Cook is not anti-development, she backed numerous sustainable development plans during her years on the HB city council.
There are many arguments against the Trestles Plan which I hope I don’t have to enumerate here, and lots of folks who oppose it who are obviously not anti-development or effete liberals.
This Metro Link idea sounds interesting, is that a serious proposal?
Dardis, good points. I have a lot of old guys who call themselves “Goldwater Conservatives” in my Orange County chapter of Healthcare For All California. And a lot of old conservatives, true conservatives, are backing Debbie against the useless Dana. d’Anconia wouldn’t understand, he’s just a predictable Republican partisan. And Great One… well, I’m really not too worried about him being able to fill out his ballot correctly.
Vern, Re: trains.
I nevah, evah, rode trains or buses in So.Calif. — that was somethin’ for poor folks and the elderly. But times have changed … traffic is nuts, and fuel’s through the roof. I spent some time in Boston/Cambridge (the very capitol of effete liberals–think Hahvahd) and D.C. where I rode the “T” and the Metro every day. Not bad. Only fools and cabbies drive in those towns. So a few month’s ago on a weekend I tried the train to visit my son in South Pasadena. Metro Link out of Santa Ana to LA Union Station is $6.5O, “Metro rail” (more like a street car) from LA to So. Pas. is $1.25. Buy your ticket from a machine right on the platform with your atm card. Really nice, got some work done on my laptop, some great views from the train, chance to pity the fools stuck on the freeway, and the 3 gallons of gas I would’ve used would’ve cost $13. Done it several times since. If you haven’t done this, do it.
My wife commutes to Pomona everyday where she’s a teacher. Wants rail, can’t do it, no train. And 10’s of 1000’s crawl every day bumper to bumper up and down that 57 and out the I-10 or the 60, 2-4 hours every day of life wasted. No plans I know of for rail. Those planners must be real men.
hey vern when the ballot comes i will be like your folks in chicago . vote early and often . and if i cant fill out the ballot correctly . i will be just like your liberal pals AND SCREAM OUT I WAS DISENFRANCHISED MY VOTE DID NOT COUNT wa wa wa wa , i need jesse and al to help me out .
Supporting Debbie Cook in order to send a message to the RPOC that we want true representation and not party hacks. We have been betrayed by our elected officials who follow the money trail and not the wishes of the Majority/ Taxpayers. We have become disenfranchised and we were born here. Taxation without Representation is what we the body politic are facing.
Conservatism in Defense of Liberty is no VICE.
