I had to laugh when I read that the Santa Ana police are now saying that after three shootings in our city, in the last week, there is no evidence that there is a gang war going on. Unbelievable. Here are a few excerpts from Jennifer Delson’s latest article in the L.A. Times, O.C. Edition:
Santa Ana officials say three shootings in the city in the last week, two of them fatal, are a coincidence, not evidence of a gang war.
“Our investigation indicates that these incidents are not related,” said Police Cpl. Jose Gonzalez. “They just happened to fall in a week.”
However, police do believe the assaults are related to gang activity.
Gonzalez said crime in the city had not increased since last year. There have been 15 gang-related homicides in Santa Ana this year, compared with 18 in 2006. Six additional homicides not related to gangs have been recorded this year. In 2006, there were seven.
Um, yeah, so at this rate we look like we’ll at least tie 2006. Grasping at straws comes to mind..
There have been 15 gang-related homicides in Santa Ana this year, compared with 18 in 2006. I predict four more by year end.
Let’s not forget that SAPD slapped a gang injunction on Santanita last year. That fact alone should have taken 4 to 6 gang related homicides off the count this year. That SAPD has 15 YTD is quite sad rellay.
I grew up here, so in my opinion there is nothing SAPD could do to prevent shootings, other than working with the DA to do a City wide injunction.
Blame the gangsters for hating each other. For asking a kid….”who you claim” and not even giving him the time to answer before shooting him.
If you have contempt for SAPD don’t call them next time if you need them.
Direct the blame on the bad guys who kill not the cops. I grew up around these bad guys. Not libraries and certainly not having anymore parks would stop them from hurting people.
anyways just my take
Yeah the cops are our heros! Call them for help sometime. Unless you are near a 7-11, Norms or a Denny’s good luck.
Carlos,
You want no blame, accountability or PD to think outside the box to address the gang issue?
Everyone including PD will agree that suppression, no matter to what degree, alone will not solve the gang problem. There are many contributing factors.
Your only offer to the discussion is, blame the gansters. Brilliant, that in your oppinion will solve the problem?
Libraries nor parks in your oppinion will stop the violence. What do you think will?
The discussion should be on how to solve not blame.
There is no comtempt in Pedroza’s post. He is stating an observation of an association between the number of shootings and evidence of gang war fare. The post is just a disagreement with his perception and that of the PD.
as I said Mr. Lomeli, a city wide gang injunction would be a good start. Make it especially uncomfortable for them. That would be good for our citizens.
I blame the gangsters that is for darn sure. I witnessed the mayhem they wrought first hand. I saw the blood. I have complete and utter contempt for them.
What I think would also be a good start would be to overhaul the Community Oriented Policing. This type of policy is very frustrating residents.
Your suggestion is simplistic and non effective.
You can’t get more severe with gang injunctions than what gets implemented in state and federal penitentiaries. The gang problem is even more severe there. Gang injunctions are not the answer.
There is a gang injunction already in the santa nita neighborhood. The gang activity slowed there but moved to other areas of the city. Your good start idea has been inplemented here and in other cities with very little long term benefit.
Again, blaming gansters or anyone else and offering nothing else is not going to resolve anything. Your approach of blame and nothing else is an emotional, unobjective and uninformed response that contributes nothing to solving the problem.
I don’t believe you grew up in the hood. If you did you would come across to have a better grasp of the social problem.
It doesn’t matter if you do not believe it. I did. Right across from the City Yard, even before the yard went up. We saw some God awful things. The worst was seeing a boy get shot in the head. I will never forget that.
You ever slept on the floor so that bullets wouldn’t hit you? I have. You little assumption is wrong.
I just did not react that way you probably would. I grew angry at those that caused so much pain in my family and community.
But to get back to my original point. I certainly would have felt safer walking to school while crossing Jerome Park if the gangsters were not allowed to hang out with each other.
Ok Mr. Lomeli, we can agree to disagree. Injunctions are a start and absolutely necessary. I feel extremely strong about that.
We have to disagree there. First make it safe for the people then we can begin with other types of effort BUT safety must come first.
Since you find my views so simplistic what would you do sir?
Carlos,
I agree with the City of Santa Ana’s Ordinance wording in the formation of the Early Prevention and Intervention Commission(EPIC).
The City Council of the City of Santa Ana hereby finds, determines and declares as follows:
Gang crime and gang-related violence prevention and intervention are distinct from all other violence containment or supression. Gang crime and violence prevention efforts are proven effective when focused on empowerment, education and economic progress, and improved life management skills while fostering healthy communities in which people can grow in dignity and safety.
