The Republican Party is doomed. So says a study regarding Latino voters in the U.S., released by the Pew Hispanic Center. Here are a few excerpts from the study:
Some 57% of Hispanic registered voters now call themselves Democrats or say they lean to the Democratic Party, while just 23% align with the Republican Party
I blogged about this too. It will be interesting to see how things shake up after the general election. I think that Latino votes and politicians need to think outside the box a bit before throwing all of the eggs in one party’s basket.
“I live in Santa Ana, a city run by Democrats. We have perhaps the worst City Council in all of Southern California.”
A typical Art Pedroza!
It should say: “the worst Latino City Council” since it is 86% Latino council.
#2
What do you mean by 86%?
I thought it was 100%!
What is the 14%??
But I thought S.A. councilman Carlos Bustamonte was the great Brown hope for the O.C. GOP..what happened?
#3,
Fiala is going around stating that the Mayor(Pulido) is 85% French.
Poster #2 is Fiala or some one who believes Fiala.
#4, you’re right… Carlos WAS.
However, he came in FOURTH in a Supervisor election and placed THIRD as a republican candidate. The OC GOP has dumped him like the radioactive waste that he is.
What #2 means #3, is that Vince Sarmiento is not Latino. So if you have 6 Latinos out of 7 total members the percentage is 6/7= 0.86= 86%
As Fidel Castro says: “We will not
live in fascist democracy….we
will live in a socialist communistic one!” (paraphrasing of
course!)
>In fact, if New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson ends up as the V.P. on the eventual Democratic presidential ticket, Latino voters will be able to vote for one of their own.
Uggghhh. I hope your not seriously suggesting that Latino politicians will automatically benifit Latin people because they share the same nationality? Take a look at our (almost) all-Latino City Council, for a glowing example. Race obviously does not determine who would make a good leader.
While we can disagree with some of the actions taken by President Bush he surely has been consistent in his support of Mexican Americans.
The Cutting Edge-atalk show covered president Bush when he held the Presidential Town Hall meeting at the Ontario Convention center in Jan 2002. That event was hosted by the Latin Business Associates, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of O.C., and the Latino Coalition. The theme was entitled ” Working for America.”
You can view and listen to that event on our web site by simply going to the Archives and scroll down to Bush Town Hall.

The last person to ask president Bush a question was a Mexican American from Texas. He said he was very concerned not only about illegal immigration but for those with proper paperwork. The president responded saying that “we must make sure the I.N.S. functions.” That they are able to “expedite the paperwork of people who are here legally and expedite the paperwork for families to unite.”
He added saying that “the long term solution is for Mexico to grow a middle class” so that people do not have to come to the US. “Family values don’t stop at the Rio Bravo. If your somebody with children to feed and you make $.50 in a state in Mexico and you can make $5.00 in America ..you are going to come to America.”
As such he has been consistent in his efforts to address this complex issue. Sadly the Mexican government has not done their part to create a middle class in their country.
You can verify what I have written by watching the program between 26:30 and 28:30 of the 65 minute program in which both Ron Winship and myself ask governor Gray Davis some questions after the event.
#7,
Why/ how is it that Sarmiento is not Latino? If not, what is he?
In reality, they are all Americans. They all are American citizens of Hispanic decent. I believe all except the Mayor were born in the U.S.A.
