“More than 100,000 people flooded the streets of the capital today to oppose a referendum that would eliminate term limits for President Hugo Chavez and help him establish a socialist state in Venezuela,” reported the L.A. Times.
How do you like that? People WANT term limits, even in Latin America. That bodes ill for Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido and his cabal, who are trying to EXTEND their council term limits in February, via their fraudulent Measure D.
Here are a few more excerpts from the Times article:
No official crowd estimates were available, but opposition politician Leopoldo Lopez said about 160,000 protesters filled the avenue, and thousands more spilled over onto surrounding roads. The rally was among the largest by the opposition in recent years.
Chavez’s ex-wife, a critic of his administration, said the political strife in Venezuela has turned it in to “time-bomb,” given the polarization and the amount of guns on the streets.
“The gun powder is spread, and all it needs is a detonator,” said Marisabel Rodriguez in comments to Colombia’s Caracol Radio, who worried that any “nonsense” by the opposition or the government could set off a wave of violence.
Henrique Capriles, mayor of the Caracas borough of Baruta, said even some people who support Chavez are against the constitutional changes.
“If there is transparency, whatever the result, we will recognize it,” Capriles said.
But he warned, “We won’t put up with a fraudulent process.”
I like the use of the phrase “fraudulent process.” It fits Measure D like a glove.
By the way, don’t forget that Pulido flew to Bolivia to meet with former coca farmer Evo Morales when he was elected president a few years ago. Morales is an ally of the fascist Chavez. Pulido probably feels quite comfortable in their company; he has been in power in Santa Ana for 21 years, and his cabal has up until now refused to consider realistic mayoral term limits.
I expect Measure D will go down to defeat. And I further expect that an effort will begin soon to collect signatures to put a mayoral term limits measure on the ballot in Santa Ana next year. Perhaps our people will take to the streets too!
Art I think you are a great man but I have a bone to pick with you. Months ago you said it was very important to see Carlos Bustamonte defeated in his bid for re-election to the S.A. city council and that you would run against him. A few days later you dropped out of the race but no one has stepped up to run. Bustamonte continues to raise money and no one is getting ready to take him one. Have you given up on the idea of beating him? Is it too tough a task? Please help me know what you think.
Poster 1,
You are too kind. Please know that we are continuing to look for a viable candidate to run against the Space Commander. Failing that, I will run.
Ward 3 does however have a lot of leaders in it. I believe that one will step up before long.
Who lives in Ward 3 that could be considered a VIABLE candidate?
That would eliminate folks like Brett Franklin.
I believe Armando De La Libertad would make a fine choice.
Art…i agree with these being off topic but could you please give us a fresh Bustamonte’s re-election bid post and so we can get the fire burning under whoever is going to take him on?
