I am hearing whispers that former State Senator Joe Dunn won’t be running for Ward 3 of the Santa Ana City Council after all. How disappointing! He almost certainly would have taken out the last Republican on the Santa Ana City Council, Carlos “Space Commander” Bustamante.
The word is that Dunn does not think that the Council is high profile enough for him. Apparently he will be running for the First Supervisorial District instead, against incumbent Janet Nguyen. Presumably there will be other candidates in the mix, including Trung “Photoshop” Nguyen, who is a “Trannie” and Santa Ana Councilwoman Claudia “Clownia” Alvarez, who lost in Assembly races against Tom Umberg and Jose Solorio. I doubt she will step aside for Dunn as she did for Umberg.
I think Dunn is making a HUGE mistake. Janet has done a great job as our Supervisor. Dunn won’t win this race. He will however destroy whatever political cache he had left. Too bad. I really was hoping he would run against Bustamante instead.
Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido will be happy to hear about all this. He hates Dunn, and now he doesn’t have to worry about dealing with Dunn on the City Council. And he can throw some token support to Clownia to get back at Dunn, who incurred Pulido’s wrath when he tried to move the 4th Court of Appeals from Santa Ana to Irvine.
Please change your mind Joe! Your political career hangs in the balance. You would be a HERO to everyone in Santa Ana if you were to take out the Space Commander. Running against Janet will end your career in politics. What a waste…
Art,
I still cannot believe that you fell for the so-called “inside tip.” I really love this quote from you on Sunday in your weekly review…
“We broke another huge story as I discovered that former State Senator Joe Dunn is considering running for Ward 3 of the Santa Ana City Council, against Councilman Carlos “Space Commander” Bustamante. Go Joe!”
While Janet Nguyen is trying to master the concept of District Outreach, she is no match for Dunn, should he decide to run for Supervisor.
At any rate, with her support from the “Republican Machine” which until recently openly opposed her, she is proving to be nothing more than a tool for the boys to play with.
The only way she is going to be able to get the corrupt stink of the OCGOP off her body is to follow your lead and register as a DTS. Although, at this point, I don’t even think that would work.
Like I said last week when you “broke” this story. It is highly unlikely that a former state senator would run for a council seat….Mayor yes, but council??? I think a Dunn vs Nguyen match will be great, and I predict Dunn will be the winner.
And although I am no fan of Dunn, If you expect Janet to win she had better start getting better advisors around her.
Chris,
Actually, our sources indicated that Dunn wanted to see what the reaction would be to a possible council campaign. We all saw how positive that reaction was, however I think the one thing Dunn came away with is that he needs to announce for SOMETHING and soon. Expect that announcement to come any day now.
The unintended consequence of Dunn’s soon to be failed campaign for supervisor will be that your party will drive away the Vietnamese vote, perhaps for a very long time. Think about it, Janet serves in a non-partisan seat. The Democratic Party of O.C. will be viewed by Vietnamese voters as the one that is trying to TAKE AWAY power from them.
That is why they WON’T back Trung this time. They already won a seat with Janet. They will want to hang on to it. Trung will be a non-factor in this race. Claudia Alvarez will get more votes than him. In fact, as unpopular as she is, she will still get Latino votes that will cause Dunn to slip into third place.
Janet will win, and at worst she will face a run-off with Claudia, not Joe.
And you are very wrong about Janet. When she has voted against measures proposed by Norby and Moorlach. She is very independent and very thoughtful. She really has done a great job. But you are too partisan to see that.
Flowerszzz,
Actually, Janet has a terrific staff. The one who heeds a new adviser is your Trannie buddy Trung. Isn’t his adviser Mike Schroeder? I would think that Schroeder has his hands full now trying to keep his boy Carona out of jail.
Trung will lose, and lose bit. After this he won’t be able to even get reelected to his school board seat. His own community will see him for what he is. A big loser.
Any word on when Schroeder will be indicted?
Well I will give her this much, she has been voting better on the board lately however a “parajito” told me that she still is not being advised well on the county’s tin cup ordinance. On her staff, of which I know a couple and they are good people BUT we all know it would be illegal for anyone on her paid county staff to advise her politically.
Joe, please decide now!
There are so many that want to support you, but patience is wearing thin.
Everybody knows that you are using Orange County as a trampoline into higher office, but stop making it so obvious.
I want to echo what the last poster just said. Joe, I have been a big supporter of your for years. I still want to support you.
However, this silent treatment game you are playing is getting old. I want to know what you are running for and I want to know now!
I, and many others in the DPOC, activist community, labor community, etc are deciding in the next week to back either you or Claudia.
And although we will never forgive Claudia for taking money from Safeway while the rest of us were out on the picket lines passing out care pagages to striking workers, we want a candidate that we can hit the ground running with NOW!
Stop playing games. Declare something or declare you are not. Either way say something before its too late. We are going to be backing Claudia and that decision will not be reversed if you continue to stay silent. No going back once we decide.
72 percent of the vote was republican when Janet won in the last elections.
Dun wont run for 1st super.
Remember the Umberg.
The era of the Vietnamese is here their voting clout is showing.
I will support Joe for Santa Ana Council, but will not support Joe for Supervisor. This flip-flopping better stop quick before he loses all my support.Period.
I’m sure Mr. Dunn will decide when to announce if or when he will run for office based on an Anon blog poster. You are really putting the presure on him now Anon #7!
The Council was a great option. He gets to keep his CMA stream of income, Santa Ana is a major city in the state and Joe would instantly be a leader. And God knows they need leaders.
Of course, if he ran for Mayor he could raise his visibility even more, as Curt has in Anaheim. Of interest, Curt somewhat dismissed reunning for mayor when the idea was first broached to him(he had been Speaker of the Assembly at one time)but he has grown to love the job—notwithstanding some of his colleagues. Same would go for Joe. Different demographics and that might hurt him in a race against Pulido but don’t think it would in a race against Bustamante.
The BOS job would entail a major pay cut because he couldn’t keep the CMA income stream going. And beating janet–or even making the run off–is not as good of a bet as running for ward 3. Don’t forget Jerry Patterson came off the loss to Dornan and ran for the BOS and failed to make the run off aganst 2 Republicans(Jim Beam and Don Roth). And then there is the Umberg story.
Great guy who has a lot of options.
Don’t know why you’re getting your knickers all in a twist over little ‘ole Joe Dunn. Hmmm
Certainly hope you don’t let his decision to run for SA Council, or not, ruin your holiday season.
So it looks like Bustamonte has an easy re-election run. While Art and others listen to the pajaritos in your cabesas, Carlos raises money and quietly gets re-elected while the gadflys gnash their teeth for another four years.

You must be one of Space Commander’s cadets. It’s no secret Carlito has a tough re-election ahead of him.
Are there any true limited-government candidates who will take on this phony Republican that many of you have dubbed Space Commander?
How does Carlos have a tough re-election? Just like with the Mayor, there are a lot of complaints, but not a lot of options.
Unless a credible candidate steps forward, Carlos is going to cruise to re-election.
Wouldn’t it be great if Joe actually cared about Santa Ana enough to serve locally on the City Council?
Whether Joe gets elected to the City Council or the Board of Supervisors, will he even finish his first term before trying to leap up to Sacramento?
Go after Dirty Gary Miller,in the 42nd Joe.
It includes your old hometown of Rancho Santa Magarita and he is soon to be facing indictment.
The intelligent move by Monsignor
Dunn!
Poster 16,
You mean like the Space Commander cruised to victory in last year’s Supervisorial election?
Let’s hope both Carlos and Joe are done!
Art, who is a credible challenger to Carlos? Mickey Mouse? Though Mickey Mouse would be a better councilmember, Mickey is not an announced candidate for council and has not had his fundraising confirmed by Disney.
So Art, until you can enlighten us about what credible candidate that is going to run against Space Dork Carlos, Santa Ana is going to be stuck with him!

Your string of whiny posts indicate that you are more than likely a lousy poker player.
Dunn is a smart cooke to pass on a political life in Santa Ana – that would be a dead end street. Not sure First District Supervisor would be much better either. He can be more effective in his private sector job and behind the scenes as a political strategist and king maker.
