The issue of Sanctuary for immigrants came up again at tonight’s Santa Ana City Council meeting. The issue did not come to a vote, but the Council members did speak about it.
Councilwoman Claudia Alvarez spoke out against it saying it was symbolic and a meaningless gesture. Councilman Carlos Bustamante said he could not vote for it. Councilwoman Michele Martinez said she needed to know more about it.
Alvarez also used her closing comments to rip First District Supervisor Janet Nguyen – again – saying that Nguyen is disrespectful. Huh? What is Alvarez talking about? She really is showing a major lack of class by campaigning for the Supervisorial race during City Council meetings.
If anything Alvarez needs to show more respect to those residents who take the time to show up at the Santa Ana City Council meetings to talk about immigration.
Can someone please explain why SA is still using the “Education First” slogan? The City has done ZERO to promote education, so why does it insist on using this false slogan? Where is the truth in advertising?
Their slogan should be “My Paycheck First!” And the same applies for the SAUSD morally bankrupt crooks.
I challenge anyone in either of these two entities to prove otherwise.
Ehhh…, oh yeah, nobody cares about Clownia anyways.
Love the new Water Tower Logo! I hope the city will use it if they pass the Sancturary City item!
Poster 2,
Keep the pressure on the Council! Be sure to email all of them.
In particular, please let Claudia Alvarez know how you feel – her email is calvarez@ci.santa-ana.ca.us.
You can also email Carlos Bustamante at cbustamante@ci.santa-ana.ca.us.
What is the use of having an all Latino City Council if most of them are vendidos to their paisanos? Pulido is in fact just as, if not more so, against immigrants as Mayor Allan Mansoor in Costa Mesa.
Be sure to give Pulido a piece of your mind at mpulido@ci.santa-ana.ca.us.
Clownia Alvarez is too big a coward to put sanctuary on the city agenda. She is all talk and no action.Just another pandering politico who pretends to care about the Latino community while doing nothing to put it on the aganda.Put up or shut up Clownia.
Art,
This time she is very correct. What are you asking for Art? The city to take a stand that is anti law enforcement? Severe all ties to the cooperation with the feds on empowerment zones, weed and seed grants, anti gang, drugs, prostitution programs? Should we kick out the FBI, and the rest of the Federal offices out of Santa Ana too? What is it that you really want?
Wasting taxpayer time and money on this issue is just plain dumb. It’s also going to split the community, not make it better. The idea will piss off a whole bunch of people for exactly the same reasons I stated and many more. You may make friends with many who immigrated without proper documentation but, legally speaking they aren’t the voters.
I would much rather see them actualy do some real good for the city, like fix the darn streets.
Now that would be leadership!
#3,
You are a total nut case — out bitting Steve Rocco.
Bravo to the council. Rather than wasting time on meaningless phrases, they should concentrate on improving the city, such as providing more libraries, parks, etc. Labeling SA as a sannctuary city accomplishes nothing and only servers to further degrade our image. We are already the laughing stock of the county. Enough!
Carl,
Are immigrants responsible for our City Council’s inability over the years to get the job done? No. They can’t vote, for the most part, so don’t blame them for the Pulido and Claudia show. Or for the Reamers’ greed.
According to dictionary.com, sanctuary means “any place of refuge; asylum.” That doesn’t sound so bad does it?
I agree with Councilwoman Martinez – we at least need to find out more about what sanctuary is. Maybe hold a public hearing?
A Santa Ana Council vote in the 1960’s voted to offically make the city a Bird Sactuary. There are still to this day signs which declare it as such. If birds from South and Central America can come to our city and know that they are welcome then why can’t we do the same for our fellow man? It’s the right thing to do. To say that they should not put this on the agenda because of pot holes in the streets is just plain silly. They can deal with more than one agenda item per week. It’s called multi-tasking and city councils do it all the time. I hope and pray that my councilmembers will be brave and stand up for human rights and the protection of all humans. It’s the kids that will get the most from this knowing that the city provides a Sanctuary for those less fortunate.
I agree that the city should stop with the Education First motto. It’s an act of self mockery to have it on the water tower.
How about running a countdown clock now and then showing us how many days Claudia has left in office so we know when to start the party?
If making Santa Ana a Sancutary City is only symbolic, then what’s the harm?
Jose Solorio is from Michoacan, Miguel Pulido is from Mexico City, and I don’t know which city in Mexico Claudia Alvarez is from and they all escaped poverty to come to Santa Ana.
Why can’t they show any compassion to their fellow compadres even if it is only symbolic?
How sad that Ms. Claudia refuses to get along and work with Janet. In a time when women of all backgrounds need to work together, Ms. Claudia choses to knee Janet in the back! What goes around comes around baby and payback is a female dog!
Here’s a news report on what a sanctuary city can do:
At a time when a rising number of states and cities are cracking down on illegal immigrants, New Haven, Conn., is reaching out to them with a unique perk: an ID card. Besides serving as identification for bank services and if police ask for ID, the card can be used at municipal locations such as libraries, beaches, and parks
I DON’T BELIEVE SANTA ANA CITIZENS WANT SANTA ANA TO BECOME A SANCTUARY CITY LIKE BELL GARDENS, MAYWOOD OR HUNTINGTON PARK, CITIES THAT ARE COURRUPT TO THE CORE.
IT WAS THE LEFT-WING COUNCILMEMBER MICHELE MARTINEZ WHO FIRST BROUGHT UP THE PROPOSAL WITH CITY STAFF. SHE RECEIVED LARGE CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION FROM NONE OTHE THAN AMIN DAVID, NATIVO LOPEZ’S SIDEKICK.
I don’t think Janet Nguyen is too concerned about Claudia. If you’re not on Claudia’s anger radar, it’s only because she hasn’t shook your hand.
How unfortunate that such a talented young latina has no respect or credibility.
I believe that the majority of Santa Ana residents WOULD support a Sanctuary City. If as those negative detracters say , it will have no impact, then let’s try it for a year. I believe it will bring our people together and will be a good thing to do. Blessed are those who help the poor and downtrodden.
Matthew 25:40 The King will reply, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”
I think the scripture that probably best fits SA City Council is PHILLIPPIANS 2:4 “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
I don’t think most of our current council reads or understands the Bible. Don’t throw pearls before swine.

Santa Ana is already corrupt to the core. But, we can all sleep comfortably knowing there’s a barking dog ordinance on the books.
YIPPEE. Another reason for the *usual suspects* to snitch on their neighbors. Spread the joy.
If it is such a good idea, maybe a coalition of elected officials should ask santa ana to become a sanctuary city. Supervisor Nguyen, Councilmember Martinez and who else can sign a letter? Art, will Ms. Nguyen sign a letter of support?
Poster 21,
This is not a shell game. Who cares what Supervisor Nguyen thinks about this? This is a City Council issue.
The real question is, how will Pulido, Bustamante and Claudia vote on this? I think we already know.
Just wanted to reiterate what #20 had already said, SANTA ANA IS CORRUPT TO THE CORE and has been, going back to the last century.
If Santa Ana had been under the Los Angeles DA’s jurisdiction, the crooks runinng the City would have been jailed a long time ago.
Santa Ana=Third World oligarchy. Look it up in the dictionary people.
“SHE RECEIVED LARGE CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTION FROM NONE OTHER THAN AMIN DAVID”
How much did she receive? When did she receive it?
Please offer some specifics for us in regards to this.
Again Claudia Alvarez does not get it. The point of the sanctuary is exactly what she believes it is, a symbolic statement. Of course it does not prohibit laws to be enforced. If we have enough cities participating and declaring their cities sanctuary, it will send a very strong message to the senate and the house regarding the need for immigration reform.
Claudia once again turns her back on those who at one time supported her for whatever reason…
Message to Claudia…I am still waiting for that call you promised regarding clarification of the issues…I wont hold my breath.
Art,
At no time did I blame anyone other than the city council for their lack of direction in what the city govt actually does.
I am greatly offended that you chose to attempt to put those words in my mouth! They need to do the job they were elected to, run the city, period.
If you don’t think that declaring the city a sanctuary would have detrimental ramifications to police services and ongoing investigations as well as other programs that receive federal funds, you don’t understand how the system works at all.
Carl,
The cities of Oakland and San Francisco are both sanctuary cities for immigrants. Did you know that? And yet they manage to function quite well with regard to law enforcement.
As for our City Council, I agree, they have not done their job for years – but that is Pulido’s fault, not the immigrants. And I think our City Manager, Dave Ream, is equally to blame.
It is unfair that you are singling out and attacking Claudia Alvarez on this issue.
Every single one of the council members (except Benavides, who was absent) spoke out AGAINST making Santa Ana a sanctuary city.
Michelle Martinez, who spoke before Alvarez, made it clear that the city council would not even bring it up for a vote.
Where is your attack on Martinez and Tinajero for their stated refusal to support a sanctuary city vote?
BTW-Why couldn’t Janet Nguyen put this item on the supervisors’ agenda for making Orange County a sanctuary county?
I have gone through San Francisco and it saddens me just to look at it. If you get something for free you dont appreciate it and that is exactly what San Francisco,Maywood/LaVerne and the other cities have become. A dumping ground. Unfortunately for those immigrants trying to make a better life for themselves get sucked in with the lazy and criminal element. If you want to help these people then use your own resources out of your own pockets and invite them to live with you. FREE lunches, homes, medical and lawyers! Would we get this al if we went to Mexico.Of course not, and I would’nt expect it either. And why dont they fight to get thier beloved country to help all the poor ones that are stuck over there. Oh I see, go to all the bars and youll see where there money goes. OJ, DAVID AMIN AND NATIVO Are just using the hispanics to make names for themselves. The devils in disguise! SHAME ON THEM
