Smear tactics against Newport Beach candidate debunked

Today’s Daily Pilot includes an article about Newport Beach council candidate Barbara Venezia, who has been smeared by Mark Bucher and Jubal/Cunningham over at Red County/OC Blog. They alleged that Venezia has a business interest in Rainbow Disposal, a vendor to Newport Beach. Ordinarily that would preclude her from serving on the Newport Beach City Council. However, the allegations against Venezia were debunked in the Daily Pilot, and by Venezia herself in a response to Jubal/Cunningham, as follows:

“I hope everyone who reads this nonsense clicks on the link that this fool says is a contract dated Dec. 2005. If you scroll down you will see that the contract date of signature is 1995! STJB does not lease trucks to Rainbow and never has.

The employees do own this company 100% and yes my husband and his partner still do own the land.

But lets stay on focus here. I have been in the televsion business for 20 years. I never worked for this company and I am the one running for office not my husband.

This is the kind of nasty politics that the public is getting sick and tired of. The public wants to hear about the issues not this silliness from people who are just trying to smear without the facts.

It screams desperation and that means I must be doing a good job campaigning.

I say to this person, who are you and who are you working for? I’m up front on who I am, who are you? The public should be asking the same questions as well as who would benefit most if I was not in the race. I guess we can all connect dots here….

Have the guts to stand up and be identified.”

According to the Daily Pilot, this is likely a case of dirty tricks by David Ellis, the political consultant who is advising Venezia’s opponent, Leslie Daigle.

Aren’t there any issues in Newport Beach that Daigle and Venezia can debate in lieu of these ridiculous political gambits? I have no idea if either of these candidates are Republicans, but surely they must differ on the local issues? I think that is what voters want to hear about.

Venezia, by the way, is endorsed by the OC Young Republicans and by Republican OC Supervisor Tom Wilson. She also enjoys the support of the Newport Beach Police and Fire Associations.
