Last month, Anaheim Union High School District trustees, including Jordan Brandman, voted 4-1 to reject a $50,000 donation from Anaheim’s After School Fund, a surprising move that has sparked tensions with a key fundraising ally long supportive of the school district’s athletic programs,” according to the O.C. Register.
Brandman explained that he voted against the donation because there were strings attached – the money had to be spent to rehire three office staffers.
“District athletic secretary Barb Hanna’s post – reduced to a half-time position July 1 – could have been restored to full time status with $33,000 of the $50,000 donation. The other two jobs – part-time consultant positions that were cut – could have been restored with the remaining $17,000, which would have paid their stipends.”
Brandman serves on the board of the non-profit that offered the money – but he still voted not to take their money. It is hard to believe that anyone would vote that way. I am disappointed in Brandman, who I supported in the past.
Brandman also has recently endorsed right-wing Republican Chris Norby for the Orange County Clerk-Recorder’s office, even though Norby is being challenged by Hugh Nguyen, a moderate, minority Republican with actual experience as a Deputy Clerk-Recorder.
Sad to see Brandman turn out to be just another political hack…
Art Art Art
If only you would actually go and get the facts instead of just rant like you do. I thought you were against using money to give people “special jobs” and instead use it for the community. Thats what these cronies wanted to do. Of course Sean Mill and his handler Claudia are the ones who tell you what to post. Right?
“It is hard to believe that anyone would vote that way.”….. Hmmm
So you believe that money with strings attached is not bribery?… or quid pro quo?
Nice Pedroza… Nice!
I think you should consult the dictionary too so you do understand a meaning of your own language Pedroza…. or are you ESL Hispanic?
Bravo for Mr. Brandman! Art, I’m disappointed you missed the real story here…finally someone stood up to the special interests of the good old boys club where the constituency that really deserved the money (students) would be shortchanged. We need more politicians like him who are actually guided by principles.

It was a private donation. AUHSD could takeit or leave it. Not taking it seems terribly stupid in this economy.
The non-profit in question includes several AUHSD employees on its board, which is chaired by the head of AUHSD’s sports department. this organization has been giving six figure donations to the district for years – they know wat they are doing.
It is supremely arrogant for the Trustees to tell this organization what to do with their private money.
The goal of this organization is to support after school activities and sports. Obviously they felt that the employees who were laid off were key to those activities. The Trustees want to spend the money elsewhere – but that is not their call. It is private money, NOT public.
If anyone in this story acted like cronies, it was the Trustees.
#1,
No one tells me what to post. Why would I even talk to Claudia Alvarez when I have ripped her on this blog dozens of times?
And what does Sean Mill have to do with a school district in Anaheim?
The DPOC is fascinated with white Democrats. Clearly they have big plans for Brandman. But so far this year he has been a disaster.
How do you feel about Brandman’s endorsement of Norby? I suppose you are giving him a free pass? I always figured that Brandman’s friendship with Curt Pringle would lead him astray…
#3,
Brandman is guided by Republican Curt Pringle. You can throw principles out the window when Pringle is involved.
“It was a private donation.”….. all bribes are private donation!
All money taken by politicians are private and
money with strings attached is bribery or quid pro quo.
An “athletic secretary” was making $66K at the AUHSD? That’s pretty athletic.
Dave,
As I understand it, the $50K donation was to cover her salary and that of two consultants. Not sure where you got the $66K figure.
But yes, that would be mightily athletic.
Public employee salaries are whack, but we already knew that.
The main point of this post is that these Trustees turned down a private donation.
The rest of the story is that the after school programs in question are used most by impoverished Latino students. The one Latino on the AUHSD Board did vote to accept the money. The rest of the Trustees didn’t – I guess Latinos are not their constituency…
Fraudio, Fraudio, Fraudio,
Your comment in post #1 under the laughable nom de plume “The Facts” is just so ridiculous.
Claudia is my handler and we tell Art what to write? Really?
Perhaps you had one drink too many at The Quill before you posted that comment.
I realize that you are a tool for whatever your DPOC handlers tell you to be, in this case Jordan Brandman, but really must I always be your Boogey Man?
I got an idea, maybe you can get Jordan to see if those folks will use the $50,000 to bailout that pathetic attempt at a blog that you call “Sunny D”.
Art, 33k was supposed to go to turning Barb from a half-time to a full-time employee. I just did the math.
Would these donations be annual? Would the money pay for benefits and additional pension costs? I’ll answer my own questions…NO!
If this well intended organization wants to make a difference, hire these employee’s themselves and donate their service to the school district.
Cuts are difficult, the board did not enjoy reducing staff, but why would they continue expenses…forever? Isn’t this the problem so many describe as governments’ structural problem.
We should applaud the board and Brandman for holding the line on costs.
just…asking? nailed it – case closed.
#12,
Two of the positions are consultants and the third is a secretary.
This organization gives up to six figures each year.
Not sure if they will continue to do so.
