Starting tomorrow, people who do not even subscribe to the Register will be able to read a section of it IN PRINT!
If I’m not getting pranked by someone on Facebook — and I could be, and I have to admit that it would be pretty funny if that’s what this is — then a paper I vaguely remember from my youth, one called the Santa Ana Register, will once again be available, this time in weekly form, starting mañana. Here’s what just came over my transom:

Good for them, I say! Andrew Galvin and others do a good job of covering local issues — which I certainly hope will include goings-on at that Civic Center of theirs — that sometimes get lost in the larger paper. It’s nice to think that more people than merely the well-off subscriber-base will get a chance to read it. (Of course, if they decide to endorse miscreants in local Santa Ana races, I might change my tune.)
While I’ve been recording the decline in the Register’s online status every week — not because it thrills me, but because the significance of their paywall experiment, the “91 Toll Express Lanes” of journalism, means that someone ought to be — I do think that they’ll find that a leakier wall is a better one. If this is the first example of such a leak, I think that we’ll all be better for it.
They say that it’s “limited issues,” so let me remind you: etiquette says just one per customer, OK?
UPDATE: Bard by the Beach Andrew Galvin claims that the Santa Ana Register is now out. But is it?
OK, apparently so. Or this could be a fiendishly clever Photoshop job! Someone go check it out and report back!
This is happening. I think delivery is expected tomorrow. But, I don’t think Galvin is part of it. He was widely bashed for being a Huntington Beach guy, and more recently made fun of by Gustavo in his own unceremonious way about being “out of touch”.
I suspect Ron G, will be central to this, I hope it it more community oriented and less political than is rumored. Santa Ana is one of Southern California’s largest cities, and there seems to be a focus on DOWNTOWN because that’s where the money lies (during daylight), but there might be more.
In the 60’s I delivered 180 SA Register papers daily on my bike – Sunday delivery was a grind.
I have not announced my run for Santa Ana office yet Greg. So relax, you can leave this miscreant out of it for now.
See update. The Galvin fellow claims to have a photo!
Note: to prove how cool we are, we’re going to refer to this as the “SanTana RegisTer.”
I saw it too!
Looks like it was well edited, put together. I hope they can draw the AD revenue to keep it together.
I don’t get the whole…”is it real thing” am I missing something was there talk of demise? It shouldn’t be surprising to anyone that the largest growth potential lies with Hispanics, of which Santa Ana is 90%+ . Don’t mistake poor reporting with BAD BUSINESS.
*There is a certain irony to this story. The LA Times…is severely cutting back on news reporting for Costa Mesa and Newport Beach…our proverbial Daily Plot…(Daily Pilot – to be correct) has lost some long time writers including Jack Wu……to the OC Register
Newport Beach – Costa Mesa “The Current”. The OC Register seems dedicated to producing a daily “The Current” for our demographic. It used to be seen once a week on Thursdays usually. Now….it has become ubiquitous daily. Don’t know the frequency for the local for Anaheim or Huntington Beach.
