New Weekly, ‘Santa Ana Register,’ to Compete with Internet Publications

Santa Ana Register banner over City Council

Starting tomorrow, people who do not even subscribe to the Register will be able to read a section of it IN PRINT!

If I’m not getting pranked by someone on Facebook — and I could be, and I have to admit that it would be pretty funny if that’s what this is — then a paper I vaguely remember from my youth, one called the Santa Ana Register, will once again be available, this time in weekly form, starting mañana.  Here’s what just came over my transom:

List: Where to pick up copies of the Santa Ana Register

Good for them, I say!  Andrew Galvin and others do a good job of covering local issues — which I certainly hope will include goings-on at that Civic Center of theirs — that sometimes get lost in the larger paper.  It’s nice to think that more people than merely the well-off subscriber-base will get a chance to read it.  (Of course, if they decide to endorse miscreants in local Santa Ana races, I might change my tune.)

While I’ve been recording the decline in the Register’s online status every week — not because it thrills me, but because the significance of their paywall experiment, the “91 Toll Express Lanes” of journalism, means that someone ought to be — I do think that they’ll find that a leakier wall is a better one.  If this is the first example of such a leak, I think that we’ll all be better for it.

They say that it’s “limited issues,” so let me remind you: etiquette says just one per customer, OK?

UPDATE:  Bard by the Beach Andrew Galvin claims that the Santa Ana Register is now out.  But is it?

Santa Ana Register out

OK, apparently so.  Or this could be a fiendishly clever Photoshop job!  Someone go check it out and report back!

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-retired due to disability, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally runs for office against bad people who would otherwise go unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too. He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.)
