We’ve been needing a new Open Thread, and here’s a video from a couple of days ago that brings joy to an angry heart. Wish I knew who these ladies are, but this is from Wednesday (Jan. 21) and happened near Harbor and Orangethorpe in Fullerton – they chase ICE out of their apartment complex and then confront Fullerton Police who appeared to have been helping the federal thugs and shouldn’ta been. 2. What Fresh Walkout Hell is THIS?
High school students across the county have been “walking out” of their classes in protest of ICE – even Dan Chmielewski has discovered this phenomenon in his comical attempt at street cred. But, something is just wrong with THIS flyer:
Just to start with:
- This looks like A.I.
- Nobody knows who made this or presumably organized such a walkout. (On “next Tuesday?”)
- What the hell are “Mexican rights,” and why would anyone outside of Mexico march for them?
- “Walkout of SCHOOL?” – Is that the Beach Boys or Alice Cooper?
- Who the hell says “Si Se Puede” any more?
- That don’t look like our City Hall.
- What the hell is “Anaheim Union District?” It’s not a school, and it’s not the name of any district either.
I’m thinking it’s just some stoopid prank some MAGA people put together, going no further than this corny flyer, but some of my more paranoid friends think it could be something more sinister, and sometimes my more paranoid friends are right. I sure wouldn’t go on some walkout based on this ridiculous flyer if I were a student.
3. This morning ICE killed nurse Alex Pretti in MN.
A statement from the family of Alex Pretti, obtained by CNN:
“We are heartbroken but also very angry.
Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately he will not be with us to see his impact.
I do not throw around the hero term lightly. However his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.
Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.”

In a reasonable world, the Orange County Office of Treasurer/Tax Collector would be run by a highly competent individual with expertise in accounting and without any notable partisan agenda. For many years, Shari Friedenrich appeared to be just such a candidate. That no longer appears to be the case.
Several colleagues whose perspectives I respect have strongly recommended supporting Dana Schulz’s candidacy. I intend to provide a more comprehensive endorsement in advance of the June election.
At present, the main concern is ensuring that Dana secures a place on the June ballot without incurring the $2,100 filing fee for a countywide office. She can do so by collecting 6,130 signatures on a petition by February 4. You can help by gathering signatures on petition and mailing or delivering them to the OC Registrar of Voters (1300 S. Grand Ave. Santa Ana 92705) before February 4.
