Too Much to Do This Weekend Weekend Open Thread!

On this weekend, as we enter the Chinese Year of the Horse, there is just too much to — oh, I already said it in the title.  Saturday Feb 1 and Sunday Feb 2 of 2014 present us with a difficult triage – an enviable triage of pleasant productivity and convivialness.  What will you do, and what will you wistfully forgo?  Let’s start with two things *I*’m not missing:

SATURDAY

The New, Improved, Gay-Friendly Tet Parade!  7-9 am

Viet Rainbow of OC writes:

Viet Rainbow of Orange County (VROC) would like to thank you for registering to march with us in the 2014 Westminster Tet Parade! This email confirms your registration to be in the VROC contingent. If you have any scheduling conflicts please let us know as soon as possible.

Just a few friendly reminders:

  • WHEN:  Please assemble at 7:00 AM on Saturday, February 1, 2014.
During the pre-parade assembly, we will give instructions, distribute parade materials, and have everyone sign liability release forms. Please give yourself enough time for traffic!
  • WHERE: Parade participants will assemble on Bolsa & Newland.
Parking is available on Bolsa & Newland/Brookhurst, and valet parking is available for $5 at ABC Supermarket. Please try to carpool and arrive early for parking spaces around the shopping centers. Please click here for a map of the parade route.
  • ATTIRE:  Our vision is to recreate a symbolic Vietnamese cultural image and to promote the safety of our contingent through unity. We ask you to help us achieve this vision by wearing either a white button-up shirt with black slacks or Aó Dài of any color while marching with VROC. Please contact us if you do not feel comfortable in either attire. Also, please remember to bring a bicycle if you are able to. We will be providing rainbow materials to further create a uniform presentation of VROC’s parade unit.
  • To ensure our safety and successful participation, we invite everyone to be mindful and to hold each other accountable. Please kindly review the information that has been provided for you when you signed up.

From the beginning, our purpose for marching is to represent our Vietnamese American and LGBTQ identities. From the bottom of our hearts, VROC thanks you again for your support and help over the last year. We look forward to being with you and your family this Saturday as we celebrate the Year of the Horse and our inclusion in the 2014 Tet Parade in Little Saigon!

We, as a community, are not complete without each other.

Happy New Year!
VROC Parade Committee

THE SANTA ANA ART WALK

OJ friend and Santora artist Matt Southgate writes:

Good Morning friends of the Santora Building for the Arts,
The Santa Ana Artists Village
and the greater creative community of Orange County.
Today, I received news that the new ownership of the Santora has handed eviction notices to two more Santora Building tenants. The two most recent tenants to receive notices are “Studio del Sotano” and “the Green Door Gallery” both of which are long standing art galleries and fixtures of the community that reside in the basement of the Santora.
Being the manager and primary rent payer of Studio Del Sotano, I can say with complete conviction that the gallery was neither behind in rent nor given the opportunity to discuss new rent agreement options (including any proposed rent increases).
Clear Communication about changes in creative direction for the Santora between existing tenants have been virtually non-existent.  There has been much hinting and gesturing by new ownership as to “New Life”, and a “New Aesthetic Approach” to be brought into the building that has for almost two decades served as the cultural “Heart of Santa Ana” but with virtually zero actual proof of these assertions being realized or validated by the new ownership.
This weekend we will be celebrating our monthly Artwalk Saturday in the gallery despite the fact that I know full well that there will be major distractions planned to mask the reality of what is actually occurring in our “Heart of Santa Ana”.
Please allow me to express my very educated opinion that the advertised and marketed “Avant Garde Style” trained musicians that are supposedly going to be planted throughout the Santora on Art Walk Saturday are going to serve as the ultimate Fascist style distraction from the true actions that are being carried out in the Santora Building.
What we are experiencing now in the Santora and throughout Santa Ana is with out a doubt, a very pathetic and irrational “Fascist Putsch”.   It is a Putsch that I  personally, along with other dedicated lovers of Santa Ana am going to dedicate myself to fighting and exposing with every bit of disposable energy that I have.
In the last two weeks alone, we have witnessed the aftermath of the calamity outside of The Crosby, the news of Memphis having to shut down, The eradication of the Surreal Santora Mural in the Heart of the Artists Village and now more closures within the core of the Artists Village. All of this is happening to a city that markets themselves as “A Place for Arts”, hometown of Orange County’s “Artists Village”.
Who here has an easy feeling about what is taking place in Santa Ana today?   I ask you.
Please have the courage to sit down with me and share your confidence. I welcome you.

Sincerely, Matt Southgate, Studio Del Sotano,

The African-American march down the Center Street Promenade in Anaheim…

And there’s more… (to come)

Talk about … whatever that guideline is that Greg sets.  All I know is I expect and want Skallywag to come running to this thread with whatever latest nonsensical outrages he finds on the right-wing blogosphere so that Anon and Anonster can have fun debunking him;  and I also expect some entertaining and trippy videos from BigBoxOfRedWhine.
