Orange County won’t have Gary Miller to kick around in Congress anymore. Neither, for that matter, will his home of Diamond Bar. Neither, most importantly from his perspective, will Congressman Ed Royce, with whom he was locked in a death match in the new CA-39. (Honors for the scoop apparently go to Martin Wisckol and his Total Buzzers at the Register.)
Miller is hopping on the train past Anaheim and Azuza all the way to Cu-ca-mong-a — that fulfills my Jack Benny Show joke quota for the first quarter of 2012 — and points east, all the way to San Berdoo.
The retirement of Jerry Lewis — and let’s all of us of a certain age scream out one last “Pretty layyy-deeee” in his honor — rather than running in CA-31 (or CA-08, for that matter) has immediately shaken up Southland politics, and Rep. Miller’s abrupt departure from OC is the first casualty. For people in my half of the new Congressional district, this probably means no more mailers from him (and Royce may not even have to bother with them, barring strong competition), something about which I am somewhat sad — and just now I got over it.
Miller will be pulling his train into a nominally Democratic district. According to the redoubtable (but rarely doubtable) Around the Capital website, Miller’s main competition in the Cuca-to-Berdoo district on the Democratic side will likely be long-time anti-Dreier opponent Russ Warner and Redlands Councilmember Pete Aguilar, though a Baca may also be in the mix. On the Republican side, this was a district where Dreier himself was rumored to be likely to land, and State Senator (and outgoing Minority Leader) Bob Dutton has also been mentioned, but Miller has beaten both of them to the punch.
This has the makings of a fine race. As a big developer, Miller is no stranger to the area — although it will take more research to see what parts of the district, if any, he has personally despoiled. On the negative side, if you’re Gary Miller — and if you are, fix my street’s potholes before you go — the district has a 4-point Democratic advantage in registration. Obama won it by 15; Brown won it by 7. Then again, Miller is going to have a pot of money that will be dwarfed only by … that of Ed Royce! Plus, he’ll be a carpetbagger, and we all know that carpetbaggers never win, except for when the do, which is not uncommonly. (See entry for “McClintock, Tom.”)
OC will miss having Gary Miller, whose current reign stretches from La Habra through the canyons to Mission Viejo and environs, to kick around. He was not as bad as some. (Although: Warner, Aguilar — call me!)

And I once again remind Brad Sherman and Howard Berman: one of you could still run against doddering, not-used-to-a-serious-challenge, gaffe-spewing Dana Rohrabacher in his new (GOP, but more intelligent and educated than before) district, sparing yourselves your own Ermandammerung!
How do we get this great idea to them?
And how best to see which one gets to move to Newport? An arm-wrestling contest?
The only way that this would happen is if one of them was as far behind the other as Miller apparently is behind Royce, so that it was better to switch and roll the dice than to face an almost certain loss.
So the one that moves — although one doesn’t actually have to move, as there’s no Constitutional requirement that one live in the district to be its representative in Congress, but only in the state — would be whichever figures out that they’re behind.
Berman won’t agree to arm-wrestle Sherman.
As to how to get the idea to them — I thought I just did!
You can’t be serious?
Well, look — if I were advising one of them, and saw that they were behind and not likely to catch up, then I would be looking for another place to run (ideally without having to move, which means Congress.) It would have to be a place where no one of significance was running against the Republican incumbent. We now that three such places here: CA-39 (Royce), CA-49 (Issa), and CA-48 (Rohrabacher.)
Of the three, I may like Dana most, because at least he has some pleasant libertarian features, but if I were a Jewish Congressman from the valley I know damn well that I’d head for the one based in Newport Beach, where I’d have a chance to raise money from moderate Republicans (including lots in the large Jewish community) who may be embarrassed by the bumptious Dana heading into their district to represent them.
Would they win? Probably not. But not definitely not. But it would energize the county and they’d go down in a blaze of glory. And it is probably better than any other likely option they’d have. (Well, maybe they could take on Janice Hahn in Long Beach — that would be funny.)
OK, I’ll accept that, with the caveat (except for the SFV Jewish thing) that the same could be argued on equal but seprate grounds about Bilbray or Hunter.
Perhaps some of these rep’s (for lack of a better term) should go the way of Jerry Lewis, who as the LA TIMES points out came to power while Jimmy Carter was president. Thats when this new cool thing could cook your dinner in MINUTES: the microwave oven!
Just because Kutcher failed at 2.5 men, doesn’t mean that new blood is not refreshing! (that was for JHG!).
would love to have brad or howard down here in newport, maybe they can raise the bar on eateries. and, maybe they can endorse leslie daigle in her suicidal bid for assembly
It is a shonda that the best deli in Orange County (at least so far as I know) is in Los Alamitos, of all places. They could campaign on that!
Benjies Deli/Restaurant in Santa Ana on N. Tustin is pretty darn good.
I haven’t been there. Katella Deli in Los Al is the real deal, though, for those who don’t want to drive up to Canter’s in LA.
Katella Deli kicks ass. Went there with a buncha rich old ladies from Seal Beach Leisure World when I was still running the OC Chapter of Health Care For All California. Best reuben ever.
Actually this story has been circulating since before Christmas. Just lacked an announcement.
Thanks for taking the joy out of my life, Tony!
He is my grandpa. You are just jealous
If this isn’t true, someone from the Miller campaign can ask that it be taken down.
If it is true, I hope that things are going well for your family.
