Featuring New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez the 12th annual OCGOP Flag Day Celebration will take place tonight at 7:00 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Irvine. Martinez was elected in November 2, 2010 pledging to cut wasteful spending, lower taxes to create more jobs, end “pay-to-play” practices and other corruption in government and fight to reform education. Governor Susana Martinez has cut spending in her state by 3%, or $156 million, and created a bill that will save New Mexico $111 million through changes in public employee pensions. Many pundits feel Governor Martinez is on the short list, for whoever the Republican Presidential nominee is, to be the Republican Vice-Presidential running mate.
Before her election as Governor, Martinez was the District Attorney for the 3rd Judicial District in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, a position she held for 13 years. In addition to managing the second largest DA’s office in the state, Governor Martinez personally tried some of the toughest cases, including child abuse and child homicide. In fact, Katie’s Law is named after Katie Sepich, a 22-year old college student whose killer Susana Martinez prosecuted and convicted. The law now requires law enforcement to take DNA for most violent felony arrests and include the samples in a database to help bring criminals to justice.
In 2008, Heart Magazine named Governor Martinez “Woman of the Year” for her dedication to children’s advocacy and her efforts to keep children safe. Martinez has twice been named New Mexico’s “Prosecutor of the Year.” Governor Martinez also has a record of battling public corruption. On her watch, for example, the Doña Ana County Clerk was convicted of five felony charges of violating the election code and a Municipal Court Judge was convicted of voter fraud.

Geoff. Thank you for posted the event. Now I can kick back and enjoy the Flag Day activity.
Perhaps I will see you there with Newbie. Mission Viejo contributors to the Juice will be there in numbers while Vern covers the GOP debate..
We OC Democrats already had our very successful Flag Day celebration on Saturday. We just can’t wait, we are so damned patriotic.
Vern. The governor told us she was a Democrat and eventually saw the light. Therefore there is still hope for you.
As our side gets hammered for our alleged attitude towards Latinos perhaps someone will complain that the GOP Keynote speaker was: (a) Female, (b) Latina (c) successful business person starting with nothing and (d) the first Latina governor of this country who gave a great down to earth presentation as she shared winning in New Mexico, a state where Republicans are outnumbered 3 to 1 by Dems.
Maybe this Governor will complete her term as Governor, then she can roll us all in the flag and dip us in spicy chipotle mayonaise to make everyone want some tepid tea.
I concur with Larry. It was a great event capped by an inspiring talk from Governor Martinez. Her compelling story of growing up in a conservative (but Democrat) Catholic home with a hardworking mom and dad, later to be moved to defend children during her time in the D.A.’s office due to a tragic case she was involved in, to her realization that she was indeed a Republican despite her parents’ affiliation, to her brave decision to not hide her party choice in a strongly Democrat state, to her stirring victory as the first Latina governor in United States history (that must really chap the lefties that she’s a Republican), the whole story was vintage America. Though I do have a question for the fine liberal contingent on here – since many of you always say anyone who is opposed to illegal immigration is racist, can you be racist against your own race (the governor is ardently opposed to ILLEGAL immigration)?
Oh yeah, that REALLY “chaps” me – that this lady chooses to be a Republican. Couldn’t sleep all night.
Your answer – we are ALL against illegal immigration. Does Governor Martinez propose an Arizona-style “show me your papers” law? I bet not. Does she propose denying medical care to the undocumented? I bet not. Would she outlaw soccer in the parks and close work centers, like Allan Mansoor did in Costa Mesa? I bet not.
Would she come out against reasonable immigration reform (even if her Republican friends jumped up and down and called it “amnesty?”) I bet not.
I bet you are correct on that Vern.
Well, she’s for rescinding New Mexico’s granting of driver’s licenses to illegals and she thinks that the border is too porous, so take from that what you will. She also is in favor of (gasp) actually having to show ID to vote.
Another point made by the governor related to competing with Texas to retain or gain jobs in her state.
When we had our corporate office in Santa Clara, Intel had a new facility right across the 101 freeway. At that time we were excited to learn that Intel made a major corporate decision to build another new manufacturing facility to the tune of $2 billion dollars.
The rest of the story is that it was to be located in Rio Rancho, New Mexico where they did not have to contend with all the red tape found here in CA. There is no excuse for making businesses jump through hoops and find their way through miles of red tape while the clock is ticking. I believe she mentioned Intel in her keynote presentation.
Don’t call PEOPLE “illegals.” It is very rude.
That’s a pitiful response from you Vern, I expect at least a good argument. I could care less about your politically correct pablum.
Yeah, yeah, I am so politically correct. Just think about it for a day, Christian.
The “argument” was winding down anyhow. In short, I don’t think most people would call Governor Martinez a racist like SOME Republicans are.
