Jeffery Lee Chung, 23, of Irvine was shot and killed by a robber, in a parking structure nearby a bar called Proof, in downtown Santa Ana, this morning at about 1:30 am, according to ABC News. Chung’s friend ran off. Chung was shot when he resisted the robbers, who got away.
While ABC News is calling this a setback for Santa Ana, I am calling it a random act of violence.
Murder happens. In fact, an 81-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder for allegedly beating to death his 94-year-old roommate at a Laguna Hills nursing home, authorities said Saturday, according to the L.A. Times. This happened at 11:20 pm on Friday.
I am still going to tonight’s Santa Ana Artist Village Art Walk with my wife and daughter. And we are going to the Dia de los Muertos exhibit at Calacas too.
Click here to watch the ABC News video and to read the rest of this post.
“I am still going to tonight’s Santa Ana Artist Village Art Walk with my wife and daughter. And we are going to the Dia de los Muertos exhibit at Calacas too.”……… Make sure that you take detour around the Memphis. You may get mugged by the liberals!
Well you get mugged by the Liberals, Progressives and Socialists every day Pedroza so it wouldn’t matter to show to them your empty valet.
Enjoy.
What a worthless moron making an idiotic statement about words that he is only parroting. Funny.
Poor wee fella,
Just out for a good night and he died for a lack of understanding that he was no longer in the US but in Mexico!
God love his family and please do not go to Santa Ana for anything other than federal or state business!’
Is it not ironic that a federal or state city is so dangerous????
The scum surround the Government for handouts!
*OC’ sanctuary City. You can give these anchor babies free education housing but at the end of the day some bald headed lazy little phucker is going to try to get one over on you in the middle of the night. I am hispanic and live here and I suggest you find elsewhere to entertain your selves at night. Seriously the cockroaches come out at night.
Mike,
Santa Ana is not a sanctuary city, although Garden Grove is.
We were quite safe tonight. I am putting up a new post about our evening at the Art Walk.
Santa Ana is NOT a sanctuary city????
Who are you trying to kid??
Firstly, no one should lose their life to gun violence in Santa Ana or elsewhere…
Secondly, Michelle and Mike —
As ABC notes, a description of the suspect(s) was not readily available and yet you must have witnessed the crime itself given your assumptions. Perhaps you should alert the police with your inside knowledge
As for the rest of the article:
“The shooting reminds many of what Santa Ana used to be.”
This line is such b.s. Apparently for the news and the city “safety” is more of a concern for the Artist Colony area. Setbacks only occur there. Well, tackling gun violence and gangs takes a whole lot more imagination and insight beyond carving out a small business village and pretending its ‘safety’ determines what Santa Ana is, or ‘used to be.’
Duane,
The Register recently reported about the fine efforts of our SAPD and community volunteers, to curb gang violence. http://www.ocregister.com/news/gang-269243-police-year.html
Art —
Funny you called me Duane! haha. Firstly, we don’t know if this particular crime is even gang related. The article brought it up. I offered my views and the side-subject altogether might not even apply!
I think there is a relevance to the discussion anyhow as it does also bring up issues about “safety,” and a “new/old santa ana”
“Jobs not Jails” is the slogan homeboy industries live by. It would be great to see something similar in the heart of OC.
gabriel,
LOL! Freudian slip. I was in a hurry as I had to go cook breakfast for my kids.
There is definitely a lot more we can do to head off the gang problem, like fixing our school district, for starters…
And how do you plan on fixing the district?
MQ,
We need to take a hard look at our district administration. Russo was hired after a bogus national search. She simply wasn’t qualified to do the job. Yet she was paid more than any other superintendent in the county.
Education dollars need to be spent in the classroom. Too much money gets wasted at the SAUSD.
We also need to review our EL programs. They simply aren’t working. Too many kids keep dropping out or they are unable to get their diplomas after failing the high school exit exam.
This district does not work well with English learners and their parents.
“As ABC notes, a description of the suspect(s) was not readily available and yet you must have witnessed the crime itself given your assumptions. Perhaps you should alert the police with your inside knowledge”
MQ says:
I do not think I mentioned the suspects, just that Santa Ana is a dangerous place to be especially at night.
“The shooting reminds many of what Santa Ana used to be.”
MQ says:
LOL… Where are you living; an alternative planet?
Santa Ana has many, many shootings my friend! You’re are real crack up!
MQ: Art disagrees with you…at least in regards to downtown.
and I just quoted the ABC write up. Where you went with it is not where I started with it! LOL!
Art, is in denile!
ABC? not very good information!!!
:9
Was that you talking on the radio the other day with Carly? Your accent is very thick! I was smiling because I had a vision of you turning into a bat!
🙂
What are you talking about? I have no accent and speak better “standard English” than you!
I did ask if it was you!! I am glad your English is standard; your comprehension is not!
That is what I am talking about! I would like to know Who the guy is?
“The suspects were described as two male Hispanics in their 20s,” Colon said. “They did not appear to be gang members.”
MQ says:
NOOOO! Really!
Art,
The only thing that will CURB gang violence is the parent’s and identifing gang members and REMOVING them from the community!
Most likely this young man was killed by youths who parents could not careless where they are and brass cops who only want to be their friends!
Gang prevention starts in the home not the peeler station or the community center!
“Gang prevention starts in the home not the peeler station or the community center!”…… Hmmmm
Unfortunately, based on my discussion with SAPD Chief Walters the parents themselves are gang members too.
They have oldest gangster 75 on their file.
Council Member Martinez is “F” Trooper gang member…….. once you are initiated you are in for the life.
So is Mayoral Candidate Amezcua “F” Trooper for the life.
Bottom line is that we are dealing with primitive people who are not fully civilized yet. The entire Aztec and Maya empires were based on the bloody rituals like ripping out the heart from the life people and drinking the blood.
It will take thousands of years to genetically purify Latinos so they lose their desire to murder others.
In meanwhile the only sanctuary should be a reservation somewhere in Arizona desert overseen by Joe Arpaio.
Fiala,
Your home country, Czechoslovakia, has the 8th highest murder by firearms rate in all of Europe. http://www.nationmaster.com/country/ez-czech-republic/cri-crime.
Although I couldn’t determined from the page that Czechoslovakia(sic) Czech Republic, has the 8th highest murder by firearms rate in all of Europe.
However, they too have lowlifes like Gypsy, Arabs, Russian Mafia etc.
You should check statistic under Hitler/Stalin when all criminals were in the concentration camps.
Fiala,
Not all the criminals. The Nazis were free at the time. Thank God the Allies shut those bastards down!
“Thank God the Allies shut those bastards down!”…….. agree they were socialists.
Ironically the Allies are now the socialists themselves.
However, on or about February 5, 2007, I have submitted brief to city council and SAPD how to resolve the Gang problem. See http://ocsatire.com/council/gangs02.pdf
It was foundation to replace Martinez’s Early Prevention and Intervention Commission (EPIC) BS which failed on arrival as I have predicted 4 years ago.
As shown in my brief we could eliminate most of the gang related problems.
In response SAPD Chief Walters was interested only in the double dipping and spiking his pension…….. so suffer Santaanos.
Please notice that SAPD Chief Walters is white but not as bright as his race would suggest to be.
@ Stanislav F:
you say, “Bottom line is that we are dealing with primitive people who are not fully civilized yet. The entire Aztec and Maya empires were based on the bloody rituals like ripping out the heart from the life people and drinking the blood . . . It will take thousands of years to genetically purify Latinos so they lose their desire to murder others.”
My Response:
When I was in the Marines, every time someone said something stupid, we would say they had a “Brain Fart” or that they had a “Brain housing” malfunction . . . we also called them a ROCK, at the same time we believed that anyone who is trying to put someone else down, is actually displaying a form of insecurity or inadequacy.
You seem to irrationally go from an event, to an UNRELATED comment . . .
The Aztecs and Mayans did engage in human and blood sacrifice. In their religious belief which was also tied in to astronomy which also requires advanced mathematics (i.e. as the concept of zero of Calculus), they believed that THEIR GODS sacrificed themselves and that this sacrifice allowed Life and the Universe to continue existing…so a human sacrifice was an attempt to emulate the acts of their Gods.
They may have been wrong in their belief but this was not a MINDLESS belief.
a) 10 fascinating things about the Mayans –
http://listverse.com/2009/09/21/top-10-fascinating-facts-about-the-mayans/
b) human sacrifice in Aztec Culture
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_sacrifice_in_Aztec_culture
Check out the Aztec Calendar…it represents SCIENTIFIC advancement…because it is more scientifically precise than anything else that was know at the time.
Also, compare the taking of human life through sacrifice and the importance it held to them and the continuation of life, and the MINDLESS taking of human life that was happening in Europe through all the unnecessary wars or the INBREEDING that occurred within the Hapsburg family and which dominated CZECHOSLOVAKIA for close to 400 years. THIS INBREEDING DID CREATE A GENETIC DEFICIENCY…perhaps this is an explanation for some of the “Brain Farts: or “brain housing malfunctions” that you sometimes spouse . . .
the GOOD NEWS is that you may have some royal Blood…the Bad News is that you are ,as we say in America “Royally Screwed” up!
I’ll go have my bowl of Pozole now . . . uhhmmm yummy!
Francisco “Paco” Barragan
my opinions only and not those of any group
To the point…………………Santa Ana has bocome what it used to be……..?
YES.
To many bars………. if I recall one city official many years ago ” said NO MORE BAR IN SANTA ANA”…. with the Dowtonw re-development and few years later we have ” several bars all over the downtown.
There is one more bar to open very soon…at 4th St. and French, that way they will balance the East and the West .
“We also need to review our EL programs. They simply aren’t working. Too many kids keep dropping out or they are unable to get their diplomas after failing the high school exit exam.
This district does not work well with English learners and their parents.”
MQ says:
I believe you regarding the over paid super indent!
The problem is that the schools in Santa Ana are all about the Adults: whether it is allowing parents to be complete cop outs when it comes to their children education and over paid teachers who do NOTHING to get kids out of the EL hole.
Orange Unified knows me well and they know that I know that they are all about the English learners because of the federal money that title 1, 3 etc gets.
I know you are a bilingual advocate, but bilingual education has been tried in LA and it failed miserably.
The fact is the kids do well, but STAR CELT tests are all rigged to prevent the children from getting out of ESL. The school’s lose the grants (2005 state audit stated: “Districts are not reclassifying kids because of possible loss of grants”)
Look at how many kids are in early advanced level year after year and do not reach advanced?? Why?? Lose of grants!
Kids speak English well because that is all they are learning…Reading, writing, math are on the back burner!
What needs to happen is all kids (prop 127) need to get out of ESL within 2 years!
In the Orange Unified it was stated to me that they evade the law and keep kids in ESL for their hole school lives… They get out of High school only speaking English!
If you are serious of running for the SAUSD… I suggest you learn all about WHY the kids are failing!
Well look, quantifying the relative “safeness” of the Artists Village area based on this one event is a fools errand. And comparing the safeness of walking back to one’s car late at night when the streets are fairly empty, to the safeness of going to ArtWalk is just as foolish.
But lets be realistic…this event sends a chill to those who live in the area and to those who enjoy visiting frequently. At the very least, it calls for greater personal vigilance and common sense when it come to where you park and how late you stay out down there.
anon – where else do you expect people to park? especially on busy nights? and how late is too late?
Well of course I’m not criticizing where this gentleman chose to park. A person should be able to park anywhere they’d like and feel safe.
But your question about how late is too late is more thorny…people are just going to have to make a judgement call on that. And it wouldn’t be stupid on their part to keep the timing of this incident in mind when making that judgement call.
Gang on gang violence is easier to accept, since they bring it upon themselves. However, this murder should bring back the reality of how bad the City of Santa Ana really is. Its only going to get worse if it hasn’t already. This is by far rock bottom and if the officials in Santa Ana don’t get it by now that its time to crack down like never before. Why wait for another senseless murder in Santa Ana! MR. Mayor what are you waiting for? How many murders have happen since you been mayor! Finally for anyone looking to enjoy themselves and want to have a good time, stay away from Santa Ana. Jeffrey Chung Lee didn’t get that chance people.
You and people like Michelle Quinn GREATLY exaggerate the issue of violent crime in Santa Ana. Do some digging and you’ll find that it’s really not particularly worse off than other cities of its size. It took me like 15 seconds to find these 2006 stats;
http://santaana.areaconnect.com/crime1.htm
Does the city need to crack down even more on gangs and violent crime? Yes. But you can say that about a lot of cities its size. And so language like “rock bottom” and saying that people need to stay away from Santa Ana is nothing more than hyperbole.
Greatly exaggerate????
The high schools have their own police force!!!!!!
The City of Santa Ana has over 200 different gangs; they are not making cookies!
Wise up!
If you want to put your life in danger by all means go to Santa Ana, just don’t drag your freinds with you!
“While ABC News is calling this a setback for Santa Ana, I am calling it a random act of violence.”
Walking through ANY parking structure with little to no surveillance/security guards at 1:30 AM is dangerous, you are ASKING to get mugged. And you call this a random act of violence?
I’ve been going to the downtown Santa Ana area for the past few years now and I have always opted to park in the adjacent outdoor parking where you have to pay.
RIP.
A man was murdered in a parking garage immediately behind several trendy bars in a random robbery attempt. Not gang on gang, not a fight or dispute that started in the bar, but a totally random, senseless murder. When ANY of you disingenuous, apologist fools can tell me when that same set of facts happened in Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Irvine, Tustin, Westminster or Orange, then you can tell all of us just how safe Santa Ana is.
A man was murdered for nothing more than his wallet in the “safest” part of Santa Ana. That means that it is NO LONGER SAFE.
God, I am so happy common sense is alive and well!
Thank you!
Anon, maybe I exaggerated a little. Maybe you should tell that to friends and family of the dead. There is no such thing as a random act of violence in Santa Ana. This was a premeditated as soon as homie decided to take a stroll with his pistol. What these trendy bars do for folks like 23 year Jeffrey is it gave false impressions of whats really going on outside these bars. I’m sorry Anon but if a innocent dead man or women is killed for no reason what so ever isn’t rock bottom for any city then you need to get your brain examined.
So you say you exaggerated, then you proceed to use the term “rock bottom” again. Maybe it’s YOUR brain that needs to be examined.
Wouldn’t 2 of these heinous acts be more like rock bottom. Or 3? Or 4? You see, you can’t quantify where “rock bottom” really is. But to say that because of this heinous act the entire city of Santa Ana has hit rock bottom is nothing more than hyperbole divorced from reality.
Its called sarcasm!!!! Sh&* happens in Santa Ana, I get that. But when is someone going to say enough is enough. You oblivious don’t think a dead person is worthy of saying “rock bottom”. A young man was probably having a great time with his friends and before he knows it, he gone. Man, if we don’t have any compassion for that then where are we going as a society. Don’t need a brain just a heart to know that!
“You oblivious don’t think a dead person is worthy of saying “rock bottom”.”
You’re right. I’m more circumspect in my choice of words than that. “Rock bottom” is a choice of words that is completely divorced from reality. “Rock bottom” suggests that the situation couldn’t possibly get any worse, when in reality it could…a reality you seem prepared to ignore just to make a point.
As I stated earlier, the City can and should do more to curtail gang activity and violent crime. So your hinting that I’m insensitive to the situation doesn’t hold water.
The City of Santa Ana has over 200 different gangs; they are not making cookies!
BWHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHAHAHAH!!! RIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHT!
It’s called living in a city. Deal with it. People get killed every day everywhere. Santa Ana is no where near as bad as many cities in the US including L.A. and the surrounding area. Gangs are in every city. The people of the OC are so used to being cloistered behind the master-planned community gates, they’re afraid of city that doesn’t have manicured lawns and a baby Gap. I’ve lived in downtown Santa Ana for many years, the biggest problem is the amount of homeless and mentally ill people dumped here, so the resident’s south of Santa Ana (ie all cities owned by the Irvine Company) don’t have to look upon the less fortunates.
I have to agree with you Andi.
I have lived in Santa Ana for almost 10 years now and people make it sound like it’s this horrendous city although I find cities like Anahiem worse since my car has gotten broken into numerous times and I always hear of people getting shot, but since people refer to Santa Ana as “Little Mexico” Santa Ana will always have a negative reputation. No matter if the shooting occurred, it happens everywhere, and I always feel safe here. It’s just unfortunate that this happened, but I was there for the Art Walk that Saturday and nothing has changed. People are still coming to the Art Walk… aside from the violence, many people still enjoy the atmosphere, and I prefer this city over Irvine, the city that picks up a homeless they see in their city and dump them right into Santa Ana.
I’m pretty dam sure the robbers are Mexican. It’s a good 100 percent chance. Damn, I hate these scums who can’t look for a job cuz they are mostly illegal cause it is so damn easy to walk the border. I hate them. And wish that they just leave and won’t make Santa Ana more dangerous. Dumb wetbacks
This article did not come off as insensitive at all. Have fun looking at overpriced items at the artwalk hipster.
