After showing you how management lives in the lap of luxury last week, I received an email from a Friend who brought to my attention a Cal State University system business practice that forces out qualified, lower paid part-time lecturers and untenured faculty, and brings back higher paid, semi retired faculty. The faculty and management at our own Cal State Fullerton know this practice as FERPing. Just the sound of the acronym sounds like something they should apologize for and we haven’t even said what exactly FERPing is.

Let’s see – you set up a retirement system that allows someone to retire at partial salary at age 62. That person does retire, but chooses to work part time. What is wrong with this picture? Nothing in my view. Would it be more acceptalbe if the same retiree went to work part time for another college, a junior college, adult education? How about as a Wal Mart greeter? The point being that when people decide to retire and move into another job, albeit part time, they should not be criticized for doing so. Older, experienced and knowledgeable workers, even professors, have a lot to offer even if just on a part time basis. I think this particlar post is weak. Next you will be arguing that people who draw social security should not be allowed to work at the same time. You must have a bias against senior citizens.
