Buh-Bye Bayh

In another stunning blow to Democrat Congressional hopes across the country, Senator Evan Bayh, the once Presidential hopeful, will not be seeking re-election in the Indiana Senate race for 2010. The blow leaves a fly-over Senate seat prime for Republican pick up.

“After all these years, my passion for service to my fellow citizens is undiminished, but my desire to do so by serving in Congress has waned,” Bayh will say.

Bayh had a 20 point edge and $13 million in the bank over former Republican Senator Dan Coats, who announced last week. Several sources indicate that internal polling had Bayh looking at a difficult re-election however. And $13 million in the bank is a great place to start a Presidential career.

Incidentally, Bayh’s announcement does more than hurt the Democrats. It pulls the rug out. You can see here that any candidate wanting to run in the 2010 Senate race has to file by NOON, February 16th. Tomorrow.
