There were a lot of rumors last year that Andrew Do, who serves as Chief of Staff to Supervisor Janet Nguyen, was running for the Garden Grove City Council as a carpetbagger. Today I received a note from a reader informing me that he had caught Andy red-handed – at his real home, in Santa Ana North Tustin.
Here is the note, “Art, I confronted Andrew at his Santa Ana home a little before noon today. As he arrived “home”…I asked him if he was “still going to call me a liar on Tuesday night”. (Garden Grove council meeting) His response as he is caught dead to right was “yeah, I’m still going to call you a liar” We”ll see how this plays out Tuesday night when I expose this. His Santa Ana North Tustin address is 1911 Beverly Glen (a $1,190,000.00 home according to Zillow.) Andrew was dressed casually in shorts and a white t-shirt…clearly this was his “home.”

As you can see in the map above, Do’s North Tustin house is miles away from Garden Grove.
Isn’t it a felony to run for a City Council when you live in another town – and to lie about it?
Do made the headlines last year when his boss Supervisor Nguyen voted against restaurant health ratings. We then broke the story that Do and Nguyen’s husband, Tom Bonikowski, co-own a Lee’s Sandwiches in Stanton which has received over 40 Orange County health violations.
Bonikowski was subsequently appointed to the Garden Grove Planning Commission.
Looks like the Jannies are just as corrupt as the Trannies…if not more so.
I wonder if we will see anything about this from and on fiberal oc?
It’s starting to seem that the OC GOP and the DPOC should start to manufacture their own nice canvas Carpet Bags, to hand out to their candidates when they can’t find any in the proper districts. They could be festooned with an elephant or donkey, and be just big enough to hold the right amount of clothes to last thru election season. Would this be a viable idea?
Vern,
Maybe their parties should just buy them all GPS units so they can figure out where they live…
Janet Nguyen and Andre Do are “thick as thieves”. There’s no way Janet Nguyen is unaware of what’s going on with this deception. Rumor last year was Janet set up Andrew with the owner of the Garden Grove house where he undoubtedly does at least rent a couch and some driveway space to occasionally park his vehicles to create the appearance that he lives in Garden Grove. He has owned that Santa Ana house for several years now. This is similar to what real estate investors do to get loans..lying about still living in their old home and saying they are living in their now second home..when its all a lie. How do such liars sleep at night?
The Garden Grove Police Department and District Attorney’s office did nothing about this carpetbagging. The Police and Fire Associations endorsed and supported Carpetbagger Andrew Do for the City Council race.
The senior City Council Member and former Mayor Bruce Broadwater questioned Andrew Do’s residency at a recent city council meeting. He is clearly concerned a fellow city council member does not live in our city. He suggested someone hire a private investigator to check into the residency issue.
Why won’t Andrew Do move to Garden Grove, aren’t we good enough for him?
#5,
Good news! I have noticed folks in Sacramento reading this story all day. Do is going to get called on the mat…
Art,
Thank you for reporting this important story. Where someone is registered to vote is not residency.
Residency is where you live, sleep, receive your mail and verify your drivers license as well as pay your property taxes.
It is crucial to have residents represent us at the local level.
I spoke with a neighbor of Andrew’s in Garden Grove. This neighbor told me Andrew and his family live across the street from him. I believed this kindly senior neighbor. This neighbor also mentioned they are gone alot, particularly on the week-end. The truth as I believe it to be is this. Andrew Do and his family arr “sucking it up” and staying in this Garden Grove house some of the time. It is as though they are “going to work” by being there. They are clearly also maintaining their Sant Ana mansion. (neighbors description and mine too) Only when returning to their beloved mansion/home is the family “off the clock”. If Andrew Do had lost the election last November this family would have rarely set foot in Garden Grove since, if at all. This whole affair is a deception on the part of Andrew Do. I personally would prefer a councilman that wants to be in Garden Grove. If Andrew Do wanted to be in Garden Grove why is he continuing to spend so much time at the old mansion. Has his Santa Ana mansion become his week-end party house? With week-ends being quite long at that? This whole fiasco is not passing the smell test.
I hope Robin Marcario runs again. Didn’t she come like THIS close last time??
4 bedroom, 2.5 bath, 3400 sqft. Bought about 7 years ago for about $733,000. Nice, very nice, but hardly a mansion… but VERY NICE.
Anyway folks, who cares?? Nobody does. Andy Quach lived in GG and rented an apt in Westminster to run. I bet we all can name many others that did something similar.
Look, I said nobody cares… but in fact, I care and I know you care, BUT generally speaking, not enough people do, and that’s why these people get away with it. You can make all the accusations you want, Andrew Do and others like him will just look at you and laugh. Because they, like many other politicians are lying bastards and they DON’T CARE.
At the Tuesday night Garden Grove city council meeting Andrew Do blatantly lied about his involvement with the Santa Ana house he owns. Live and in color on channel 3 (for GG residents next coupla weeks) and viewable anytime on the Garden Grove website http://www.ci.garden-grove.ci.us/ (city council agenda & videos) Oct. 29,2009 I was there in Santa Ana and witnessed his arrival to the home. He was not there in response to any concerns about the home. He was flagrantly caught in the act of occupying the home he owns. Even if he splits occupancy with his rental home in Garden Grove. Even if he only occupies this home on the week-ends. Why was it so important to tell so many lies at the council meeting. He also lied about his public exposure at the Garden Grove house. I have driven by that home around 3 times a week for the year he has occupied it. That would be around 150 times. I have only seen 1 sign of life ever , even that was not Andrew Do. He seems to play a game of parking one of his vehicles (probably registered to 1911 Beverly Glen) for a few days at a time. The big questions are why does Andrew Do feel the need to lie and embellish. Is he breaking some law that only he is aware of? He also lied completely about what his neighbors supposedly told him. His lies totally shocked me. I gues I assumed an elected official was’nt allowed to lie like that. How naive was I? Andrew keeps calling this a political issue, this is a moral issue. Andrew Do has shown me he has very low moral standards.
Andrew Do is a liar? I believe so. Not only that liar, he is also a coward or chicken wet. Why?
Last year 2008, he called me a crazy dog on the radio (VNCR 106.3FM) and (VMG 106.3FM) both Vietnamese broadcasting. He also accused I received 1% net from Presidential candidate Senator John McCain. I requested either an apology or proof for the accusation on Vietnamese newspaper, letter or even I spoke on Garden grove council meeting. Until today he still not response to my request.
Any suggestion? I am planning to come council meeting one more time then a lawsuit, possible.
Nguyen Hung, Welcome to Orange Juice.
I don’t have any advice or knowledge of what would help your situation, but I did want to say hello and thanks for posting. Good luck at the council meeting. Rv- –
Hello Art,
I will meet you at City Hall council meeting 11/10/2009 (?). I need a good laywer for my lawsuit too.
It’s not rocket science to see what A Do has done. He did the minimum required to run for city council. (technically rented a house/room in GG) When Janet got him elected he really NEVER came to GG UNTIL some pressure was put on him at the council meetings. I know this for a fact. I have observed this farce for the past year. ONLY RECENTLY has he started to have this back and forth between Santa Ana and GG. Before him and especially his family was continuing to live in Santa Ana as they have since 2002. For A Do to say now that he only goes to his house in Santa Ana… (which I am sure has been continuing to receive utility bills and other proof of its occupance)…for him to say he only goes to Santa Ana when his neighbor supposedly phones him is such a stone cold lie as to insult all of Garden Grove and Santa Ana. A little internet search has enlightened me that A Do is famous already for having zero integrity and being basically just Janet Nguyens “hitman”. I hope more people will stand up to this bully at the council meeting. We hopefully will stop being victims of his ilk.
I listened to the defensive and disrespectful way councilman Andrew Do treated Garden Grove resident, Rod Powell at the city council meeting. Mr. Powel investigated on his own where councilman Do lives in Santa Ana. Andrew Do implied and treated Mr. Powel as though he was breaking the law researching where a Garden Grove Councilman lives.
Thank you for posting the website.
It is Andrew Do who is lying.
Lam Pho researched the home that Andrew Do owns in Santa Ana for the past seven years. Let me get this right Andrew grew up in Garden Grove and as an adult decided to buy a home in Santa Ana, then run and won a seat on the Garden Grove City Council?
How is this legal?
Andrew Do took the bait, and lost his cool, then told many out right lies at the last council meeting. Andrew, when you read this blog, as I know you will, know that you should have kept quiet. Your lack of ability to maintain your composure will be your political undoing. Andrew, I think your “boss” (county supervisor Janet Nguyen) should have INSISTED that since you have been gone from Garden Grove for over 20 years….and have the audacity to run for Garden Grove city council…..Janet Nguyen should have insisted you actually move to Garden Grove. Andrew, once you tell ONE lie, you are now branded as a liar, and can no longer be trusted. You’ve told many lies. Go back home to Santa Ana. You can not undo the fact that you continued living excusively in Santa Ana for several months into your councilman position. Just because after being “outed” you at least started trying to make it “look” like you live in Garden Grove….the insult to all of us Garden Grove residents can not be forgotten. I look forward to confronting you again Tuesday night at the Garden Grove city council meeting. I suppose I need to make it more clear what I saw in Santa Ana when you and your family arrived home from your Sunday excursion.
Andrew Do has no respect for the residents of Garden Grove.
Garden Grove residents please vote for Robin Marcario if she runs in the next city council race.
Hung Nguyen, I think you should think twice before trying accuse any one of lying or deception. Take a look at all the people in your circle, especially Dina Nguyen. She’s as shady as it comes. Recently, she set up a consulting business with Bart (Andy Quach”s best friend) and Andy Quach. Instead of helping her constituents when they call her, she turned them over to Andy Quach and he charged them thousands of dollars for his “advise”. Knowing that whtever they need, he’ll be able to get the vote for them because with Bruce Broadwater and Dina Nguyen, he’s already locked in for two votes, all Dina have to do now is convice another idiot and they got it fixed. The money is then split 3 ways if they need attorney Bart. How sweet is that. Just because it’s technically legal, that does NOT make it ethical!!! SO WHY DON’T YOU STOP NIBBLING AT ANDREW’S ASS AND DO SOMETHING USEFUL LIKE EXPOSING THE TRAMP DINA NGUYEN AND THUGS OF ABUSING THEIR ELECTED POSITIONS.
The answer as of August 2011 is 100% Andrew Do is living in Santa Ana. The old Garden Grove facade home is up for sale and unoccupied. How quickly this do do bird has flown the coop. Andrew is a sociopathic liar and scumbag. Good riddance. Too bad the damage you did to the Garden grove city council and the city of Garden Grove will takes years to unDo. Andrew, you can now live off your wife’s income. We shall call you Mr. Pham.
I’d forgotten all about this story, from 12 years ago, by Art Pedroza! It gave the address of Andrew’s million-dollar-plus home in Santa Ana, at the time he was serving as Garden Grove councilman and pretending to live there.
At the time he was an acolyte of Janet Nguyen (or “Jannie”) and pretty much did what she wanted; soon after he broke away from her, and it’s been bitterness between them ever since. And he left the Council two years later, in the middle of his term, “to spend more time with his family” – maybe he was tired of hiding where he lived! I wrote MY first piece about Andrew when he left Council: “D’OH – There Goes Do!”
http://www.orangejuiceblog.com/2011/04/doh-there-goes-do/
Well somehow the cranky First District Supervisor has just discovered this old piece, and had his subordinates send me a threatening letter – I guess it’s illegal to give out the home address of a Court Employee. So fine, I deleted the address and Google Map image.
But still, it’s true! Do lied about his residence for about two years so he could serve on Garden Grove Council while living in Santa Ana. Just thought all you Do fans and Do foes might enjoy this blast from the past! (Ya Do Foe MoFo’s!)
Please clarify. Do is not an employee of the court. Which subordinate sent the cranky letter? and please consider publishing it.

Yeah, I guess it’s not a subordinate but some consultant he hired to clear up his online presence. I asked Greg if I should remove the address and haven’t heard back yet. It seemed a reasonable enough request though, so I did it for now.
Having read the Code cited you are under no obligation to remove anything without a written demand by the official in question – not some service hired by who knows who; and the demand has to cite what the threat is. Do is a Supervisor, which the law covers, but he not a court employee, and court employees are not listed under those affected, anyhow.
Just typical small-town hackery at work.
Uhhhh — I hadn’t seen that communication. My interest is definitely piqued.
I’ve reprinted the entire statute in question below. (I’m trusting her citation here.) It is not limited to court officials and would also cover Supervisors and various others. But (1) it’s not clear that a post from 2009 of whenever would constitute present “publication,” and that (2) the First Amendment interest in reporting his correct address (and whether he had committed a crime), (3) the fact that the statute was passed after the publication of this information and Mr. Do has sat on his rights for longer that what I presume would be the statute of limitations for such an offense has long since passed. and (t) you purchased the right to this blog free of claims against the previous owner (as I recall), meaning that if they wanted to go after anyone it would be Pedroza (Hi, Art!) suggests to me that not only can the article be restored — though wait to hear from me before you do so, cowboy — but that if he still lives there and it is outside of his district we would be entitled to publish it again, in a headline if we wished.
Let me talk to the “superior court” in question (if she will identify the judge in question to me, which if not will make for its own story) and do some research on whether a public official’s making threats of prosecution against journalists covering his potential or action misdeeds carries with it any penalties of its own. (Crikey, we live in a crazy county!)
It’s not outside of his current Supervisorial District.
The point, when this was published, was that it was outside of Garden Grove, where he was serving as Councilman. I’ve seen elsewhere that he was also renting a cheap little apartment in Garden Grove at the time to deal with this little annoyance. Two years later he quit Council without much explanation. He may have tired of the residence charade and waste of rent on the apartment.
Also, this feint at us comes in the context of Andrew’s constant bitching about what he calls “The Noise of OC.”
For you to be guilty of giving away the address of a Supervisor, doesn’t it have to have been his actual address? And if it was — and maybe is — is it still outside of his district? If so, you should send it to Spitzer and ask him to hash it all out. If he won’t — this was a former colleague, after all — then to the AG! You’re welcome to put me in touch with the subordinate so I can have a nice lawyer to flunky talk with them.
I forgot to put this on my to-do list. Remind me on Monday morning, ok?
I saw that you started a new piece about this, is that what you’re going to publish tomorrow morning?
Let me know if I should restore this piece to it’s original form. If I do, we should include a partial list of OC office holders and seekers – mainly Republicans – who have faked a residence (different from carpetbagging) and, unlike Roman Reyna, never got in trouble.
I need to make some calls to figure out exactly what’s going on before I can tell you to revert it — if I ever decide that that’s OK. What’s more interesting to me at this point is — well, you can read the draft, but don’t spoil the surprises!
Post restored to its original glory, plus a picture of the home.
Don’t know if this is still Andrew’s home, as it was when he “served” far away on Garden Grove Council.
