China is our biggest trade partner – and they are a repressive regime with a truly terrible human rights record. Yet we trade with them – while continuing a stupid embargo against Cuba, a tiny Caribbean nation that poses no threat to us. Meanwhile virtually the rest of the civilized world is already trading with Cuba.
Today, President Obama reversed a Bush policy that prevented folks from visiting Cuba. “In abandoning longstanding restrictions on the ability of Cuban-Americans to visit and send money to family members on the island, President Obama demonstrated Monday that he was willing to open the door toward greater engagement with Cuba — but at this point, only a crack,” according to the New York Times.
But the embargo still holds. What good reason is there for Obama to continue this idiotic policy?
I doubt if Cuba would want a maquiladora program so what else can they trade with – Sugar? – but US growers reap millions in subsidies and cheap cuban sugar would ruin them, their employees, and end their political contributions. Also, we’ve got plenty of beaches in Florida & Caribbean resorts that don’t need more competition.
Nope, we won’t end trade restrictions without getting something in return.
The embargo is not presidential polity but a law passed by congress. Of course the embargo should be repealed.
It’s time for SAM to get into the game. Fidel will go quietly….and his people will find parts for their ’57 Chevy Cabs….from our After Market Auto Suppliers! They will probably even deliver at no charge!
