The Weight is Over! Meet Dr. Robert Skversky

Special Feature:  Dr.  Robert Skversky

“Tired of Being Overweight?”   You’ve come to the right place!  Read on!

Being overweight is a disease and a disorder!

Obesity is a metabolic, chronic and progressive disease with a significant genetic predisposition. Chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, etc. require long term drug therapy for control not cure. And the same is true for treating obesity.

During the past year Dr. Robert Skversky has been featured in the Wall Street Journal and has appeared on “Good Morning America,” “The Today Show,” and “The Early Show” discussing the appropriate use of medication “off label” for long term weight loss.

Dr. Skversky states “The goal of a prudent weight-loss program goes beyond weight loss itself, but extends to the improvement in self esteem and empowerment as unexpected gifts of long term weight-loss control. This disease obesity needs to be taken seriously, treated seriously and most important, treated with respect.”

He has written numerous articles discussing the myths associated with weight control, putting diet and exercise in proper perspective, and the essential role of pharmacotherapy for long term weight loss. Dr. Skversky states, “Obesity is a metabolic, chronic and progressive disease with a significant genetic predisposition. It is similar to other diseases like diabetes and hypertension which it can cause or make worse. Chronic diseases need long term drug therapy, in most cases, for control not cure.”

Originally from Philadelphia, Dr. Skversky received his medical degree from Hahnemann University (formerly Hahnemann Medical College) in 1970. He completed his family practice residency at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, CA, in 1973 and became a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice the same year. Dr. Skversky is a staff physician at Hoag Memorial Hospital, a member of the American Medical Association, Orange County Medical Association, and the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. Dr. Skversky had been a family practice physician in Newport Beach for more than 22 years before practicing bariatrics full time.

Dr. Skversky has committed the past fifteen years of his professional career to the medical treatment of the overweight and obese patient. He has been at the forefront of treating obesity as a chronic disease using combination drug therapy, in addition to diet and exercise protocols on a long term basis.

Dr. R began “Weight No More” in 1992 as a personalized medical weight-loss program for patients in his private family practice. His goal was to develop a program that would allow my overweight and obese patients to lose weight and maintain their weight-loss on a long term basis. The paradigm for weight loss in our country which is based on diet, exercise, and behavior modification has proven ineffective (failed miserably) for the vast majority of patients. Thus a more aggressive approach using pharmacotherapy (prescription medication)  is essential as an integral part of a prudent comprehensive medical weight loss program. This disease obesity, needs to be taken seriously, treated seriously and most importantly treated with respect.

Dr. Robert Skversky and his staff at Weight No More Medical Associates in Newport Beach.  Every time I go there…business is booming!  It really does work!

Dr.  R is unique because he didn’t jump on the starve yourself and exercise for 5 days a week bandwagon.  If you have cancer, you take medication right?  If you are overweight, then you will be treated as a patient who is medically ill (overweight, obese) rather than being told to eat lettuce all day and drink 10 gallons of water.  In fact,  I haven’t experienced anyone on his staff preaching to me about eating my carrots and drinking my prune juice.

This program is NOTHING like your typical  Nutrisystem or Jenny Craig diet.  Maybe that’s why he is so famous in his area and why business is ALWAYS like Grand Central Station.  You are treated with respect and you leave feeling a little bit better knowing that your weight gain may not always be because you ate too much.  You may have a thryroid condition, diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension.  Maybe you are one of the few who eats one french fry and gains 10 lbs.  That’s why Dr. Skversky  helps his patients with so many success stories over the years….he treats obesity like an illness.

Now, you may be thinking that pills are never the solution to weight loss.  Can you actually believe any of the fad diets or the people who tell you to eat your veggies and exercise?  Not one of them has proven to be long term solution for weightloss.  In fact, I gained weight when I exercised every day and was put on an eating plan.  With Dr. R’s plan, I consistently lose weight approximately 10 lbs per month.

If I stuck to the program consistently, I could be at my target weight, but I go on and off the program sometimes (tsk tsk).

I decided to write about this topic because it can be very political and controversial.

“What’s for Dinner?”

Don’t panic: You are not being sentenced to a life of broiled chicken or lemon juice on lettuce.

With the Weight No More program, you are given no specific “diet.” You are asked to “watch what you eat” with information on low-fat alternatives, high protein, low carbohydrate, and recommendations for exercise.

The medication prescribed will result in suppression of appetite, control of cravings, lowering of one’s metabolic set point at the same time maintaining your metabolism. Net effect=Weight loss. And, since you are under medical supervision, you are assured that you are losing weight safely.

Remember that the Weight No More program is designed for a lifetime of success. Whenever you need assistance, we will be there for you.

When you begin the program, office visits are on a monthly basis. After attaining goal weight, visits are less frequent based on medical need.

Yes, being overweight is frustrating. But now it can be treated, and controlled.  What’s your take on this?

Dr. Skversky has 10 staff members.  He has offices in Temecula and Newport Beach.  Seven of his employees have been with for more than 14 years which speaks well for the integrity of the program.
