“US Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-CA) suggested Thursday that the time may be right for a “pilot program” of marijuana regulation. The congresswoman’s comments came as she was interviewed live on CNN to discuss a congressional hearing on the prohibition-related violence taking place in Mexico. Sanchez is chair of the House Homeland Security Committee Subcommittee on Border, Maritime, and Global Counterterrorism,” according to “Drug War Chronicle.”
Citing a recent Zogby poll commissioned by NORML that found majority support for taxed and regulated marijuana use and sales on the West Coast, Sanchez was responding to her host’s question about the whole notion of drug legalization. California’s receptiveness toward less restrictive marijuana laws would make it a good place to experiment, she said.
“Well, certainly, I have seen in my own state of California people over and over voting a big majority the whole issue of marijuana and possession of that,” Sanchez said. “So maybe it would be a good pilot program to see how that regulation of marijuana might happen in California since the populace, the majority of Californians believe maybe that should happen.”
Way to go Congresswoman Sanchez! Thanks for showing the GOP hack Congressmen in the O.C. what real leadership is all about…
Opium Parlors were rampant in the 1900’s through the 1920’s in Downtown LA/SF Chinatowns. Cocaine was put into every bottle of Coca Cola….cough medicine and many “fix all remedies” from the turn of the century. When people started to die because of abuse….these things got regulated out of existence.
Marijuana is probably not as bad as any of the above mentioned “feel good remedies”….but we believe that “the sale and distribution” of it are the prime issues. Growing anything in a pot..no pun intended and they joyfully put into your food or air supply for your own private use..probably doesn’t need much law enforcement. Growing acres of the product and then setting up a National Distribution Network….without paying any taxes; probably requires the efforts of Law Enforcement, not new regulations from the Dept. of Agriculture!
Most elected officials are afraid of telling people they support marijuana. It’s been around for thousands of years, the only reason it became illegal was because the alcohol manufactures lobbied against the only “feel good” competition (a simple plant that could grow in an apartment) to booze.
Booze causes some people to: drive fast, kill others while running red lights, swerve, beat their wives, slur their speech, vomit, fall, talk stupid, erectile dysfunction.
Marijuana on the other hand causes people to philosophize, ponder, question, drive at the speed limit or a little slower, eat a little more, laugh a little more, enlighten sexual experience, hum.
Put an end to the “War on Drugs”. It would not only end “The Drug War”, but would also save thousands of lives on both sides of the border.
Way to go Congresswoman Sanchez ! ! !
*Tony,
Very funny….stuff. No we are not being
smark alec here. Reminds us alot of George Carlin
when he explained the difference between Football and Baseball (Baseball is more pastoral…Football more aggressive!)
But then..you probably remember his whole rake on this.
rw
Winship’s,
Are you saying:
Baseball = Marijuana
Football = alcohol
Or the other way around? If the difference is just degree of effect and alcohol is legal,then do you support Loretta’s position considering alcohol is legal?
If not, if I understand your logic, you support alcohol being illegal too.
Alcohol is legal. Some is more aggressive (scotch whisky) than others (light beer). All is legal just the same.
People die everyday due to alcohol abuse. It has not been regulated out of existence. What gives?
“Marijuana is probably not as bad as any of the above mentioned” R&A Winship, you must be kidding.
NO ONE HAS EVER OVERDOSED AND DIED FROM TOO MUCH MARIJUANA.
RID estimates as many as 4,000 deaths occur EACH YEAR from alcohol overdosing.
Your point is?
*Actually St. Tony…..we mentioned Opium and Cocaine…..Opium…like a derivative of heroin…
you.know…or is it the other way round.
No, we only mentioned the analogy by Carlin…
you can probably pull it up on You Tube..

Give that a try and get back to us.
Another issue that the GOP Kool-Aid Drinkers hate! The fact is, That the Drug War was over a long time ago! The Drugs Won! C’mon people get real. It’s time to put this issue on the table. The War on Drugs is now causing more harm than the Drugs ever did!!! Anyone see what’s happening to Mexico right now? There’s a direct cause and effect there. We’re making Bad People Filthy rich and VERY POWERFUL!!! The only way to ever have ANY control over it, is to Legalize, Tax and Regulate! The Drug War has spent Zillions, has turned whole Countries in to war zones, Granted Police the power to Seize property, conduct no-knock raids,and a whole host of other Evils, And has produced NO results!!!!!!!!! Wake Up!!!!!!! Do we want War with Mexico? NNNOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Not me! That’s a VERY BAD IDEA!!!!!!

There is a great book called “Compromised” by
Terry Reed. Get it and read the part about Gov. Bill Clinton and key aide 300lb. Mike Huckabee in the back of the Arkansas Governor’s van. Receiving a briefcase with $1 million bucks of real money from the DEA and CIA – Bill and Mike smoked “Grande El rope-O’s Deluxe”. We didn’t say it….Read the book. Now that was a war on
drugs!
I got busted for growing and selling marijuana, about 6 wks ago. I now have no medicine for my horrible pain that I am in daily. I have nerve damage in my low back and neck. I also have gastrol reflux that is eating my throat up. The ONLY medicine that I have EVER tried that relieves or greatly reduces my pain and discomfort, is marijuana. It relaxes my stomach and back muscles, so they don’t spasum. Can we just legalize it and get it over with, already!!! Now, I’ll probably have to go on trial and have to pay thousands of $’s that I don’t have for some attorney that will do little or nothing to keep me out of jail, and I’ve never had anything more than a traffic ticket in my entire 58 yrs of life. I am NOT a bad person. I keep a clean house, I treat my dogs with love and kindness, I cook for my handicapped neighbor, I smile and address people with respect and love, I talk to people with kindness, love my children and grandchildren with a passion, grow my own vegetables, adore my husband to death, call my childhood friends at least once a month, take flowers to my mother and fathers and brothers graves four times a year, and love and honor my country. I could go on, but I think you get my drift. I am a very nice, clean, good person, but I might , soon, be taking up jail cell room , from a murderer, child molester, drunk driver, animal abuser, child or wife abuser, or thief. Where’s the justice. Come on people, let’s get real and LEGALIZE MARIJUANA!!!
