State Senator Lou Correa probably wishes he had never promised not to vote to raise taxes. But now he is stuck with that brave position. And now his vote matters – a lot.
“The Orange County Democrat, who proudly campaigned in 2006 as “a different kind of Democrat,” still hasn’t committed to Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg that he’ll support a negotiated budget pact with new taxes,” according to the Sacramento Bee.
Correa’s vote is the key vote, as it turns out. The OC GOP will come after him big time in 2010, if he votes to increase taxes. But if he doesn’t, then State Senate Leader Darrell Steinberg is going to be most unhappy. The last Senate Leader, Don Perata, treated Correa like crap for not playing ball. God only knows what Steinberg will do if Correa tanks the new budget.
Correa should do what he thinks is right, period. I won’t abandon him if he breaks his tax pledge. He is a good man and he is in a bind. Something has to be done about the budget. The problem was not created by Correa. But he might end up getting dumped on no matter what he does. Maybe he should have stayed on the O.C. Board of Supervisors?
A man is only as good as his word. The Republicans will remove anybody in their own party who had promised to not vote for a tax increase, and are right to do it to a Democrat.
This is still Orange County and Taxes are usually a sticking point, if you promise not to raise them, you had better keep to that promise!
#1,
And yet so many members of your party were perfectly happy to rip off taxpayers, for years, by helping themselves to free concert tickets at the O.C. Fair. What a bunch of hypocrites!
I won’t abandon him if he breaks his tax pledge.
Didn’t you recently become a Libertarian, Art? As in, really low taxes annd minimal government? That doesn’t exactly square with standing by Lou if he not only supports, but provides the deciding vote to enact the largest tax increase in California history.
Still, it’s interesting to watch this unusual exhibition of loyalty. Lou did endorse you for council after all, so you gotta stand by your man even if he is the mechanism by which the rest of us suck up an enormous tax hike.
He is a good man and he is in a bind.
I agree that Lou is a good man,, but he’s not in a “bind.” He’s just under pressure to break a very explicit promise he made to voters.
And yet so many members of your party were perfectly happy to rip off taxpayers, for years, by helping themselves to free concert tickets at the O.C. Fair.
Huh? First, it’s already an established fact that the OC Fair is a self-funding entity — taxpayers aren’t paying for any of it. Which you know, and conveniently ignore.
Secondly, and more importantly, the concert ticket issue isn’t remotely in the same galaxy as being the key vote in whether or not too impose a $14 billion tax hike. But I forgot: we’re dealing with Pedroza logic.
Matt/Jubal,
Perhaps if your party made reducing government waste and taxes its to priorities instead of hating gays and Mexicans you might have more legislators in Sacramento?
Recent studies show that your party has lost young voters, here in Orange County. Like Mexicans and gays, the young voters won’t be back in the GOP anytime soon.
You think times are tough now? Wait until you lose even more seats in the next few years…
As for Correa, he has nothing to worry about. Who the Hell are you going to recruit against him? Van Tran? He is pathetic. Janet Nguyen? Equally pathetic. You don’t have anyone to run against Correa, so stick a sock in it. Your threats are empty.
I love this Blog! I can predict the reply
#1 Art. Blah Blah Blah (may or may not have a point)
#2 A person will reply saying they disagree, or use facts and logic.
#3 Art will Reply with some “fact” that is totally unrelated
#4 The person will call his BS, and Stupididty
#5 Art will reply, you are a Racist Republican,a nd you hate all things Mexican and Gays
As far as the Ticket think is concerned, I don’t know if it was tax money or not, but I am opposed to ANY type of Free Ride, as “perks” or otherwise! If a politition is invited to attend by the group, they should be allowed to get a ticket, for them and a “date” nut none of this 20 per person
Bigmarkod,
As long as you love this blog, it’s all good…
I know. I love you to….You will always be my Valentine!
Thank you, Art, for once again refusing to respond to my comment.
Chalk up another “L” in Art’s column.
Matt/Jubal,
“Chalk up another “L” in Art’s column.”
Gee Matt, does that mean you love me too? Awww…
Happy Valentine’s Day to you too!
Bigmarkod:
Well put.
Your’re welcome, Art. You can always start “Libertarians for Higher Taxes” in the unlikely event Lou votes for the budget.
Will Matt be Art’s Valentine? 😉
and NO JUNIOR, THIS IS NOT A SERIOUS DEATH THREAT AGAINST MAYOR PULIDO OR ANYONE ELSE.
Matt/Jubal,
I don’t support higher taxes. What I am saying is that I am not going to hold this vote against Lou. As usual, nuance escapes you.
Red,
Very funny! 🙂
I don’t support higher taxes. What I am saying is that I am not going to hold this vote against Lou.
I understood what you said, Art. It just doesn’t make any logical sense.
