“Transcripts of text messages sent by Orange County sheriff’s officials during a November 2008 Board of Supervisors meeting shows the law enforcement leaders used their cell phones to ridicule activists and even supervisors during a public hearing on gun permit policies,” according to the O.C. Register.
Amazing. Sheriff Sandra Hutchens handpicked her assistants – and brought them here from Los Angeles. These text messages show that these guys don’t serve us and they despise those who speak out against their policies. They also regularly insult the Supervisors.
Steven Greenhut wrote about this over at the Register’s Orange Punch blog:
Assistant Chief Mike Hillmann, the LAPD’s former SWAT official who handled the overbearing security at the January 13 board meeting, mocked Supervisor Janet Nguyen and CCW public speakers during the board meeting on November 18.
In one Blackberry message to Undersheriff John Scott, Hillmann writes this about Nguyen: “I hope Janet has a pet she can call a friend.” He then writes: “I may just take my self as hostage for ‘good cause.’ Then I intend to revoke my sanity.”
I am not sure what Hillman means by wondering if Nguyen has a pet, but I think that she and her husband have a dog. Regardless, Hillman ought to resign in shame for these and other text messages he sent to his compadres. You can read the actual text messages at this link.
When is Hutchens going to fire these creeps?
Shockingly unprofessional behaviour. First he has his deputies looking at Supervisor Nguyen’s private notes and now this.
This pattern of behaviour is an improvement for OCSD how?
What a pathetic bunch…and these are the people at the top? They should all be fired. Hutchens should resign.
Hillman has been in charge in the City of Los Angeles for so long he thinks that he is not-expendable and non accountable.
Sheriff Hutchens has made several mistakes and he is one of many more to come.
Recall? I know people, who know people,… http://www.friendsforfullertonsfuture.org/?p=75
I agree with you all, total disgrace to the citizens of OC.

Hutchens and her thug henchmen are just gangsters, engaging in strongarm totalitarian practices. I don’t claim to be a psychologist who can analyze what happened to get them into their us-vs-them mindset, but THEY are the BG’s, I trust them no more then I would trust a tatted gangster on the streetcorner. Hutchens has completely lost sight of the difference between a law abiding citizen who is helping pay her salary, and a criminal on the street. She seems only to view things in terms of “cop vs. civilian”.
The citizens of Orange County deserve better, we deserve an honest and respectful Sheriff, one who still remembers who pays the bills, and should remember who they are working for, and WHY they still have jobs. Orange County residents want the Sheriff to enforce the laws, to uphold the Constitution, to protect and serve the residents, nothing less will be acceptable.
They use to teach this stuff to cops. Maybe some of them forgot some basic academy lessons? Here’s a couple excerpts from Peel’s Nine Principles of Law Enforcement that seem appropiate:
2. To recognize always that the power of the police to fulfill their functions and duties is dependent on public approval of their existence, actions and behaviour, and on their ability to secure and maintain public respect.
7. To maintain at all times a relationship with the public that gives reality to the historic tradition that the police are the public and that the public are the police; the police being only members of the public who are paid to give full-time attention to duties which are incumbent on every citizen, in the interests of community welfare and existence.
well, you all sound like henchmen rather than concerned OC citizens. would you rather Carona come back? he’s as close to a mobster/gangster you can get.
I figure Hillman was stuck in a 8 hour long board meeting that could probably be resolved in 15 minutes if the interest of the safety of OC was truly the motive… I see it as someone creating humor amongst friends (not publicly) in a long enduring board meeting.. big deal. next…
I’m sure if the conversations were to the point things would have moved along swiftly and not labored on for 8 hours…
why are so many people so quick to jump on the lynch mob wagon over a few humorus intended comments? I’m personally glad to see someone in the OC sherif brass trult trying to make a difference and clean up the OC cowboy ways/days..
since everyone is looking at the comments soooo literally, I wonder how bad it was for Hillmann to ACTUALLY want to stick a pencil in his eye?.. think about that for a minute.. oh, he must have been trying to relay a message humorously…
is this really about the CCW policy or just more interesting if we can find something… anything to cause a stir…
oh, one more thought.. if you want respect, show respect… I dont see any of the unprofessional, disrespectful comments made by Janet Nguyen towards S. Hutchens posted anywhere… I figure the OC Sheriff’s have a little more professionalism (now) than to report and publicize some lame comment… welcome to the real world Orange County.. OC is in bad shape after Carona… you need the right people to get in there and weed out the corrupt and confused. I see S. Hutchens and her staff as the right people for the job.. have you guys even looked at the background of the top brass? these guys/girls arent new to this. They have all been around the block a few times i’m sure..
Now that I think about it… most of the people I have addressed by this post here are probably what’s wrong with OC anyway… OC is not above the law and doesn’t make their own rules… maybe you thought that 2 years ago but back to reality.
I look forward to the excellent things to come from the new OC Sheriff’s Dept.
“just reading this stuff makes me want to stick a pencil in my eye!”
I hope that doesnt make the paper tomorrow…
OC Fan,
The same leadership style that is causing LA “the McArthur Park pangs” as the city pays out millions for the respect and love they showed to the protestors. Yes, we need that here in OC like we need the black plague. I’m sure that’s the kind of leadership you want for the OC Sheriffs Dept.
When your on our time, please refrain from such conversation on the publics dime. Good god show at least a little respect for those that pay your salaries.
Please proceed with your pencils at your leisure, on your own time.
