Before playing golf this morning we stopped at a nearby McDonalds restaurant where I found a pad inviting students to apply for a RMHC/Hacer college scholarship. www.meencanta.com
Note: HACER. Ronald McDonald House Charities
The flyer reads: Apply for a $100,000 Hispanic college scholarship.
Since the inception of the RMHC/HACER program, almost 13,000 Hispanic students have been awarded more than $17.9 million in scholarships to support their college education.
The program nationally offers four $100,000 scholarships each year, as well as other local scholarships. Get your application and full details at www.meencanta.com Reach for your goals! Entry deadline is February 16, 2009.
There is a note on the bottom which reads: $25,000 per year over four years iwth verificiation of enrollment. Participating local RMHC Chapters award additional scholarships in varying amonts. Terms and conditions may apply. Visit www.meencanta.com for details.
Or, as stated on the reverse side: Solicita una beca universitaria Hispana valorada en $100,000.
And from today’s Contra Costa Times:
With budget cuts straining California’s public colleges and universities, some are worried about the effects on Latinos, who are particularly difficult to recruit to higher education in the best of times.
The California State University system, where more than one-quarter of students are Latino, plans to cut enrollment by 10,000 next year. Although the university still plans to guarantee entry to the vast majority of qualified California residents, the plan could discourage students from applying.
Several organizations have worked for years to increase college-attendance rates among the state’s 14.3 million Latinos, and some are concerned the new challenges could roll back gains. More than 43 percent of California’s 18- to 24-year-old population is Latino, compared with 27 percent of the state’s public college and university enrollment.
Although a recent poll by the Public Policy Institute of California showed Latinos are far more likely than other ethnicities to value higher education, some parents are recent immigrants who did not attend college and do not understand the challenges their children face.

I’m not getting the point of this. Most of the participants on this blog are not Hispanic and are also too old for college scholarships. McDonald’s can spend its money however it wants.
As long as they don’t contribute to Prop 8. Jk.
Ron.
It’s called diversity. While none of us are attending high school perhaps there are relatives of other readers who might show interest in this opportunity. Let me remind you that we have thousands of hits from people around the state who do not add comments. While they may not be participants as you oint out they do read our blog posts. I also send out around 1,000 copies of my posts via email to my own data base. Ask Art as we do, or did have readership general location data by mileage.
At Santa Ana H.S. we have a college coordinator who helps seniors in finding financial aid as well as in their college apps. (One position that wasn’t eliminated completely, thank God, although the one doing it has multiple jobs now.) Alex Robles ’06, got a McDonald’s scholarship worth a few thousand dollars. Sounds like a lot, but he’s now a junior at Occidental College majoring in physics, and Oxy costs about $160,000 for 4 years. Hard to do without some serious financial aid and low-cost loans.
Incidently, everyones hurting in this economy except McDonald’s. Micky-D had a banner year in 2008 — they serve a great cup of coffee for $2 less than a Starbucks. Apparently, that brought the traffic in.
Blatantly racist. Could never happen just for white pholks, there would be protests all over. But if you can give scholarships just to athletes, musicians, smart kids, etc. I guess you can go the race route also. All in all, poor taste. Poor white kid, don’t apply. Rich Hispanic, please do apply. Hmmmm…..
Larry,
OK, my bad. I thought you were cynically trying to goad posters into the kind of comment that jimbob posted. I need to focus more on the black parts and the blue parts of posts and stop trying to read between the lines.
