“Colin Powell, a Republican who was President Bush’s first secretary of state, endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president Sunday and criticized the tone of Republican John McCain’s campaign,” according to the Washington Times.
Powell said “Obama is better suited to handle the nation’s economic problems as well as help improve its standing in the world. I firmly believe that at this point in America’s history, we need a president that will not just continue, even with a new face and with the changes and with some maverick aspects, who will not just continue basically the policies that we have been following in recent years.”
Way to get back at Bush for ruining your political career Mr. Powell! Well done.
“My oh my!” as Dick Enberg might say about a good play by the St. Louis Rams!
As 2nd Amendment defenders, as Social Conservatives, as Fiscal Conservatives, as Reagan Conservatives to the bone: “We will be voting for
The Black Guy! Barack Obama!”
The Republican Party had us in their pockets for lots of years! When the day came that they took us for granted. When the day came that they started looking more like Democrats than Democrats….that is the day that we join
Colin Powell in the endorsement process. Colin Powell will be back as the best
Secretary of State in United States history – for the Obama Administration.
We now may begin our “Prayer Vigil” for the future of our once great country!
President Obama will need all our help!
So, you’re voting for the black guy. Spoken like true Republicans.
Powell for President!

Elsheba Khan at the grave of her son, Specialist Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan.
Colin Powell ended his endorsement of Obama by referring to the death of a Muslim soldier, Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan of Manahawkin, N.J., who was killed in Iraq on Aug. 6, 2007, and whose remains were buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Here is a link to additional information about this honored soldier as well as Powell’s comments: http://www.motleymoose.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=465
I would like to correct whoever,CPL Khan was a American soldier and not a Muslim soldier. And we should thank ALL American soldiers for the sacrifices they make for us.
I can see why Bush got rid of Powell.
Great response, Red. Anyone who has suffered a loss because of the idiocy of war knows just how that mother feels. I am glad that one old warrior at least has seen that war is not the answer- props to Marvin.
Hey guys, thanks for the thoughtful posts. I still have trouble with Powell, because he is the voice that reassured so many of us that our doubts about the ill-conceived Iraq war should be be laid to rest. I watched the Michael Moore movie, Slacker Uprising http://slackeruprising.com/ last nite (free online download, btw) and it really just outraged me to see families without their children who were in the armed forces and being sent to an unnecessary war. Truely, Mr. Bush should be brought up on war crimes for his deception to this nation. IMO.
However, I think Colin Powell’s well-reasoned endorsement of Obama is outstanding.
This video is about 5 minutes long and is worth seeing. Powel’s comments will be remembered in our history. History in the making moment here, have a quick watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=243gXtXtEwc
Oh Please RV, you’re ready to forgive Powell and at the same time cheer his endorsment…
Hillary will be the first SCOTUS pick, you watch, the price for getting her to play ball in the general election. A gig for life that she can’t be fired from and she can do as she damn well pleases. It also something Bill can’t do anymore.
And no billing records to find.
There you go Ron, that’s what we’re going to get.
Carl,
He’s a Republican Icon. I am a Republican, too. I just could not vote with the radicals of bush co that have been hell bent on destroying this country.
Why so bitter? Your little neocons had the last years to destroy the country. Go ahead and vote against your own interests. I’ll bet you a hundred bucks that you don’t make over $250K for that tax raise and you would actually benefit from a tax cut for the middle class, which is what Obama is proposing.
RV,
Powell is a Republican has been.
I’m not bitter at all. Just stating the facts as I see them.
Bitter is when you personalize and make condescending remarks to try to bolster your point of view.
They are not now nor have they ever been as you put it “Your little neocons had the last years to destroy the country.”
Nor would I take your money about the taxes. I don’t make my vote for sale on such paltry issues as how much tax I will personally pay.
My comments on Powell were aimed more at what Vern has eluded too in his post on the Powell endorsement. Either the man was duped or complicate in the intelligence mess that led to the invasion of Iraq. You decide which, either calls into question his intelligence and/or his honesty. I think Vern and I agree on this point.
Just to refresh your memory, I was against going into Iraq from the very beginning. I said at the time Americans don’t have the stomach for it.
The ruination of the economy can be better laid at the feet of the greedy Realtors, Appraisers, Loan Brokers, Mortgage Companies and Institutional investors than the current Presidential administration. If it hadn’t been for collective criminal intent and their combined attempt to fill there own pockets as quickly as they could, there would have been no need for overbearing and costly oversight. As we know law enforcement is always behind the criminal, as they react to crime and are not proactive as it would be in a police state.
What profession was it you said you were in RV?
Either the man was duped or complicate in the intelligence mess that led to the invasion of Iraq.
I would say more complicit than duped. It was a very disturbing episode, for someone I had always thought fairly highly of, and still seems extremely intelligent, wise, and USUALLY honest. His UN speech was Feb. 5, 2003. I don’t know why, but I’ve always remembered that date. General Powell speaks of it as the lowest moment of his career/life. It seems like his military habit of being a “good soldier” kicked in and overtook his judgment and honesty.
By all accounts he had a huge fit before giving the speech, looking through the pages of cooked and exaggerated intelligence he was expected to pass his imprimatur on, and throwing half of them in the air yelling, “I’m not gonna read this BULLSHIT!” But then he took SOME of it, I guess leaving out what he considered to be the most EGREGIOUS bullshit, and recited it in front of the world, very solemnly and convincingly, with George Tenet watching approvingly from behind.
Many folks in the US and beyond were swayed by this highly regarded general’s presentation. Others of us who had been studying the issues more closely were “GOBSMACKED.” Meaningless aerial photos of trucks going from one building to another. Vials of weaponized anthrax (as he held up a dramatic white-powder-filled prop) that scientists knew Saddam couldn’t have the ability to manufacture. UNMANNED DRONES THAT COULD CROSS THE ATLANTIC AND DROP THIS STUFF ON US? Normally smart people swallowed it all BECAUSE COLIN POWELL WAS SAYING IT.
I claim the discovery of the following irony that nobody else seems to have noticed (and I didn’t have a blog in 2003)
FACT ONE: Powell’s other “low point” was near the beginning of his career, when he was in charge of investigating the My Lai Massacre, and pretty much whitewashed it until, I think, some of the witnesses spoke to journalists later.
FACT TWO: A print of Picasso’s anti-war masterpiece “Guernica” hung – as far as I know still hangs – on the wall where Powell gave his Iraq BS talk. But for that event it was COVERED UP with a quilt or something, because it sure would have given mixed signals for us to see all those Spanish peasants getting bombed from above when we were on the way to FREE IRAQ, wouldn’t it?
So as I said to my brother Crab (and not many other people as I had no blog): “Looks like Colin Powell’s career is now bookended by the coverups of two massacres!” (My Lai and Guernica)
Red, Carl, you guys are both using the word “posts” when you should say “comments” This can sometimes be confusing. “Posts” are the articles we write, on which people comment. Thank you. Carry on.
Brother Vern,
I think it may go even deeper than that, but you have it essentially correct.
And let me just add as well the “Chicken Dog” post was bitter.
“Mr. Bush should be brought up on war crimes for his deception to this nation. IMO.However, I think Colin Powell’s well-reasoned endorsement of Obama is outstanding.”
So Bush should be brought up on war crime charges, yet the guy who you all claim went along with the great fooling is now someone to be believed? Even Vern thinks Powell was complicit.
“He’s (Powell) a Republican Icon”
Not in my mind.
Never has been.
He supports abortion and affirmative action.
He supports gun control and thinks government is underfunded and understaffed.
He supports increasing Social Security taxes.
And it’s pretty crappy of him to bite the hand that has put him where he is today.
Back in the 80’s, Powell was stationed in Colorado. His Commander, General John W. Hudachek, said in an efficiency evaluation that Powell was a poor leader who should not be promoted.
Yet President Reagan made him National Security Advisor.
President Bush 1 made him a 4 star General and Commander of FORSCOM and later Chairman of Joint Chiefs
Bush 2 made Powell Sec of State
So sad to see him toss it all away………..
Over the course of his long, distinguished, and checkered career, Colin Powell has been right about many things, and he is right now to support Obama.
This would be true EVEN IF he got drunk in Anaheim and hit a cop car on the way home from a Proposition 8 party with Erwin Chemerinsky.
Why do you Republicans see everything only in black and white?
