So Art, whats the story in these guys?
#1,
Great question. There are a lot of Latinos in this race, which creates a vote split scenario that favors Rob Richardson.
And the community is split with regard to the Latino candidates. I don’t think Mike Gonzalez is qualified to run for the SAUSD School Board – but he is getting support out there. He promotes events and owns a security company. He has been a reliable ally of Miguel Pulido, the Mayor of Santa Ana.
There are a lot of women running too. I am told that the ones getting the most support out there are Valerie Amezcua, Irene Ibarra and Gloria Alvarado. Cecilia Aguinaga lost two years ago and is having a hard time raising money.
I don’t know why Roman Reyna is running – someone must have put him up to run to dilute the Latino vote, which is typical Santa Ana politics.
You have to figure that Richardson will win if other non-Latino candidates do not file. However, I also heard last night that the deadline for filing might be extended because a current SAUSD school board member, Rosie Avila, is retiring from the school board. If that happens I hope Thomas Gordon, my co-blogger, runs.
As for the rest of the candidates I think Ibarra and Amezcua will run the best campaigns but Gonzalez will have support from Team Pulido and he can field a lot of precinct walkers.
Lastly, incumbent Jose Hernandez, who was appointed to the board to fill out Sal Tinajero’s term, looks like TOAST. Unless he spends his own money he won’t win. Folks just don’t like him.
I wonder if any of them will promise to bring back those axed jobs if they win. Rosie and John were against those cuts that affect so many households in Santa Ana and there might be some real momentum by voters to put people in place who care about students and the community first.
Anyone know what’s happening with the union recall?
Rob Richardson has served nearly two decades on the school board. I hope he’s retired in Nov.
He has been a major disappointment this time around.
I hope Thomas Gordon throws his hat in the ring!
Why do you assume Richardson will win just because he’s a token white guy? This guero came in third place in 2004. The demographics have changed with all the white flight having flown the coup. Good luck to all the candidates and may the three SanTana Chicana’s win. I’m sorry Cecilia, pero mija, it’s not your time.
CSEA has recalled their president
i hope my friend roman reyna wins… he’s the best person for the job 🙂
Toinette,
Welcome to OJ and I am glad you posted here.
A personal endorsement is always a good thing. Could you tell other readers what qualities you like in Mr. Reyna or other details that could help voters decide? Do you know if he happens to have a website/link?
Cheers ~Rv
