Orange Juice: Week in Review

First…Happy Veteran’s Day! May God bless our men and women who have served, and continue to serve, in our U.S. military. Larry Gilbert did not forget as he posted information about a few Veteran’s Day events.

It is hard to believe that another week has passed us by! And what a week it was. We began the week with bad news for Santa Ana residents, as the Santa Ana City Council slipped a last minute item on their agenda to remove Mayoral term limits from their already bogus “Keep Claudia Alvarez in office” term limits measure. We then provided a link to George Collin’s website, where you can hear the Santa Ana Council Members making promises about term limits that they never intended to keep!

The Council did vote, this past Monday, to extend their pathetic careers another four years, and they removed the mayoral term limits from their fraudulent measure. The Council Members who voted this way then tried to spin their side of the story in an O.C. Register article, but it was beyond lame. Then Sean Mill tried to pin the whole mess on the wrong Council Members in “Who’s for mayoral term limits.” And Claudio Gallegos added his thoughts to the mix.

Our term limits coverage continued as I wondered what the Council Members have done to deserve another four years in office, and Thomas Gordon found out that Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido lied when he said many of the Mayors he knows have been in office longer than him. It turns out the term limit facts show that most Mayors in the U.S. operate under very strict term limits! I went on to explain why we need mayoral term limits in Santa Ana.

We also broke a big story about the Santa Ana Council’s plans for the Willowbrook golf course, which is owned by Garden Grove. Sean Mill revealed that the Council wants to bring a soccer team into town, with a new soccer stadium. The O.C. Register did not get around to covering this story until yesterday!

We broke another huge story as I discovered that former State Senator Joe Dunn is considering running for Ward 3 of the Santa Ana City Council, against Councilman Carlos “Space Commander” Bustamante. Go Joe!

I followed up that story with a look at which politicians might go after Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez’ seat if she moves on, or Assemblyman Jose Solorio’s seat when he terms out.

Our Santa Ana coverage continued with “Welcome to Santa Ana,” by Thomas Gordon. Our readers reacted as he shared with us a story he found at the Santiago Street Lofts Blog. Apparently it is not easy getting broken down abandoned vehicles picked up in Santa Ana!

Thomas Gordon also wrote about a judge in West Floral Park who was robbed in her own house! Isn’t that neighborhood part of the Space Commander’s ward? And Sean Mill revealed the charges that have piled up on Ware Disposal, in the Logan Neighborhood of Santa Ana.

And we bid a sad farewell to our original coblogger, Claudio Gallegos. But we also welcomed a new coblogger, Tish Leon!

We also covered news from the rest of Orange County. The debacle that unfolded last week as O.C. Sheriff Mike Carona was indicted, continued as we warned our readers NOT to trust his hand picked temporary fill-in, Jo Ann Galisky.

Larry Gilbert attended a California League of Cities symposium regarding eminent domain, which was held in Santa Ana but was NOT attended by ANY of our Santa Ana Council Members.

Sandy Genis wrote about the new Huntington Beach dog neutering measure, and so did Joe Shaw.

The Winships said “No campaign contribution limits ever!” And Coach Chris Emami cracked us up with “O.C. Politics: the Movie.” He also asked for help with fundraising for his basketball team.

Aria Ghafari wondered if Arnold might run for the U.S. Senate. Sean Mill told us about a rotten friend of Rudy Giuliani. And I wrote about our own rotten Assembly Speaker, Fabian Nunez.

Thomas Gordon wrote about how the Tustin City Council ignores residents. And I wrote about how Irvine Mayor Larry Agran overlooked the fact that his handpicked Great Pork manager was a coke-snorting thief.

Whew! So much news and so little time. Thanks for reading the Orange Juice!

This week’s artwork is “The First Flag of Iwo Jima” by Ron Stark. February 23, 1945 . . . Atop volcanic Mt. Suribachi, Marines of the 3rd Platoon, Easy Company, 28th Regiment, 5th Marine Division, hoist the first American flag over Iwo Jima. As Old Glory breaks the skyline, a tremendous roar of shouts and whistles will emerge from the Marines on the beaches and the sailors at sea. Later, this flag will be lowered and a replacement raised. Although a photo of the second flag would be cherished by the home front,
the first flag belonged to the heroes of Iwo Jima.
