It is my understanding that the O.C. Democrats don’t have a candidate for the 33rd Senate District. To me, Assemblywoman Mimi Walters and Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu are not strong candidates. I realize the Republicans have more voters in this district, but why should the Democrats concede this seat?
There is a solution. Tom Umberg lives in Villa Park. For the first time in years he could run for office without being a carpetbagger. Sure, he lost in his last race, for the O.C. Board of Supervisors. But this time he would be running for a district that he would be a good match for. He could take a page from his former opponent, Santa Ana Councilwoman Claudia Alvarez, and make signs that say “He’s One of Us!”
Umberg has a background that includes service in the Legislature, in the U.S. military, and in the Clinton administration as Deputy Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.
Why not Umberg? He’s got nothing better to do. He is far more qualified than either Walters or Sidhu. He ought to run.
Dude, Art… I think you’ve lost it.
Umberg is done. Acabado as it were.
The 33rd is either going to Mimi or Harry.
Great idea Art! Tom is a smart guy and would be a great candidate. Let’s draft Tom!
Ryan,
Umberg is done in the 34th, but I don’t see why he should not run in his home district. The Democrats don’t appear to have anyone else available.
Walters and Sidhu are still silent as to their support for or opposition to the Harald Martin ouster effort. How can you stomach politicians who are afraid to take a leadership position?
Tom is done as far as electoral politics after that pathetic performance in the 1st SD. And please don’t bring up his military service without mentioning his wife campaigning for him with a cardboard cutout while he’s having an extramarital affair/uhh…serving in Gitmo. Mimi Walters will win the 33rd, my district.
Art, Tom can run all he wants to in his “home district,” but I just think it’d be a waste of time, energy, and money for the Democrats… unless of course that’s exactly why you posted this.
Or, could it be that instead of Mimi and Harry, you’d rather vote for Tom Umberg (since it is YOUR Senate seat we’re talking about, lol.)
I dunno. It’s your choice to make. It’s not my senate district and I like both Harry and Mimi… so I’m going to stay out of it.
Tom has a good resume for any candidate, but then again so do a lot of people… and that doesn’t always mean they should be in office.
There’s a reason Tom isn’t supervisor. The big thing that helps someone cross the finish line is one’s own personality, demeanor, and personal stride to do good for their community. Perhaps, Mr. Umberg is missing one of these traits?
Tom should file for that post. He would have the home town advantage.
I don’t think Tom lost the 1st super. as much as the Viet’s took it with block voting.
And this block voting will move a few more Viet’s into offices in up coming election as the Latino officer holders are replaced.
It is well known that the Latino’s don’t vote in large numbers.
THat is why the last few white men like Tom U. and J. Dunn among others were elected here in the past.
But now all that is over. The Viet’s are coming and will vote in overwelming numbers. Cenral/West Orange County will become the power base of Viet polictical power.
Art–forget it. Tom’s moved on. A Dem can’t win that seat anyway and the Dem who will run will be carrying the Party banner for the whole ticket. Tom will be helping other people running, making money and spending time with the family.
Bringing up his name only invites pot shots from the peanut gallery.
Bladerunner,
I respect your sage words of wisdom, but you Democrats should not give the Reeps a clear path to victory in the 33rd. Get someone to run and give them a stirring battle! Make them spend their ill-gotten money. Bring the issues out and let the voters decide.
Now is not the time for a retreat.
How about Jordan Brandman for the 33rd? Unless of course he runs for the AUHSD seat that Martin is about to lose…
Brandman is too moderate of a Dem to survive Sacramento(assuming Moses came back and parted the 91 and kept all those South County reps from voting). Look how Correa is treated. I’m waiting for Perata to move Lou’s office to Folsom. Look how Maldanado is treated for his independence in wanting to vote his districts needs rather the the needs of the GOP Caucus.
