The Greater Orange News is reporting that Florice Hoffman will be running for the Orange School Board, if incumbent Trustee Steve Rocco is successfully recalled.
Hoffman ran last year against Republican Congressman Ed Royce. She is a labor attorney.
Here is more bio information from Greater Orange News:
I think it’s an enormous mistake for anyone to classify Florice Hoffman simply as a “labor lawyer.” Florice is a very bright and capable woman, confident and unflappable.
I’m a veteran of the CUSD wars, and I can tell you that if Florice lived in CUSD we’d be clamoring to get her on our board.
So she’s a labor lawyer, so what? The cons won’t be able to find anyone more qualified than she. Any con who runs against her just because she’s a labor lawyer will be doing the district a huge disservice.
Gila,
I was not trying to put her down. Jubal was, but not me.
I’m AFL-CIO, remember?
Art, you communist!
I didn’t mean to imply that you in particular were putting Florice down, though I do think your chosen headline unnecessarily puts her in a box.
And, though I didn’t say so in my previous comment, I’m bothered by the politicization of non-partisan offices.
A labor lawyer would be a huge asset. She would understand employee and ethical issues better than an average board member.
Too bad she’s not in SA. They could use someone on the board like Ms. Hoffman.
Q. How many conservative economists does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A. None. If the government would just leave it alone, it would screw itself in.
Gila,
It is a box of her own making. If she was a firefighter I would have said “Firefighter interested in Rocco’s seat.” There is nothing wrong with being a lawyer. Or a labor lawyer for that matter. Come out of the closet all you abogados!
I don’t get it. We encourage our young people to be lawyers, doctors, etc. Especially our young women and girls. We encourage people to rally behind our hard working blue-collar workers. Yet we bash a labor lawyer for choosing to be who she is and being successful?
Can someone tell what job Ms. Hoffman should have chosen when she was younger? What is the more appropriate employment for a woman wanting to serve her community? She has a college degree, has a house, pays her bills, is raising her children. But she shouldn’t run because she is not a Conservative? She sounds pretty smart and responsible to me. I encourage all conservatives to vote for Rocco, just like Matt! You get what you pay for!
Art — Sadly, in OC I think calling someone a “labor lawyer” is a contemptuous epithet. Why not call her a “Jewish mother of twins?” or “blond PTA member?” (Or, if she’s running against Rocco, “sane person.”) “Labor lawyer,” while accurate, seems to me to be a loaded description.
Personally, I just call her “Florice Hoffman.”
