Log Cabin Republicans steal the show!
Friday night at the California Republican Party (CRP) Convention, in Century City, was well-attended and there was an evening dinner with all the statewide candidates, except for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (pictured at right at a different event). Tony Strickland, the GOP candidate for Controller, mentioned he was well-funded – but all the funds were in people’s wallets.
There was a party hosted by an Asian American GOP group that featured guest speakers Bob Huff and Van Tran, both Assemblymen. The event was an ice cream social – and I am told that the coconut ice cream bars were to die for. Van Tran’s wife was there too – but she didn’t have much to say. A little pajarito reported a Bubba Gump Bustamante sighting on Friday too – but he was not seen on Saturday at the Hispanic Republican meeting.
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was the main speaker on Saturday, for lunch. Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney spoke at dinner and reports indicate that he gave a terrific – and presidential – speech.
Parties on Saturday were aplenty – with the Log Cabin Republicans starting things off with a tiki-style fest that featured their members decked out in Hawaiian shirts and leis. Everyone was drinking pina coladas. Those in attendance included, Dr. Alexandria Coronado, of the OC Board of Education; Assembly candidate Samantha Allen-Newman, who is running for Jackie Goldberg’s seat; Ralph Denney, who is running for the 76th Assembly District; Steve Scion, who is running for the Assembly seat in West Hollywood; and Ryan Gene Williams, the GOP candidate for the 69th Assembly District. According to Mike Lawson at the Liberal OC Blog, Williams said that he was attending the party in order to “whore himself to the Log Cabin Republicans.” Wow – way to take one for the team in Central OC! Actually, Williams was just trolling for money for his campaign.
The California College Republicans had a no-host bar – but methinks the quality gave way to quantity, as in lots of Miller Lite. There were perhaps fifty College Republicans there, particularly the groups from Fullerton, Irvine, USC, UCLA and San Francisco State.
The Governor’s staff had a party along with a bunch of Victory 2006 campaign staff – but it was mostly insiders.
Finally, Jon Fleischman, the consultant who used to work for OC Sheriff Mike Carona, was working the crowd all weekend as he is running for CRP Southern Vice Chair. God willing someone decent will oppose him. (Don’t get mad at me Jon – I just don’t like to see consultants in positions of leadership in our party – too much conflict of interest).
Art,
Nice article!
More I begin to understand the art of politics, more I Love it and want more of it.
Looks like Arnold had to made very difficult attendance decision same as I had to decide future of Santa Ana’s prosperity by kneeling my decisive vote to Miguel.
A rook and the queen are sacrificed to achieve mate. A love the epinephrine rush from adrenal medulla into my bloodstream.
Ryan Williams just lost my vote.
I guess it’s true, never send a boy to do a man’s job! From now on Ryan will only eat pancakes with Log Cabin syrup.
Anon 10:09, that’s interesting.
Nobody calls Ryan by his first and last name… everyone calls him either Ryan or Ryan Gene.
I’d be curious to see if you’re an actual voter in the 69th.
brock in anaheim,
I guess I’m not “everybody.” Once the word is out that Williams is courting the Queer crowd, he’ll surge to record low numbers on election day.
Better tell your friend Ryan or Ryan Gene, to be careful what company he keeps if he wants any chance to be elected.
At least tell him to keep his mouth shut about proudly courting Log Cabin support. Real Republicans don’t take too kindly to that. Or…is Williams AC/DC as well? If so, that’s his decision but he’s in the wrong party.
“Is Williams into AC/DC as well”
Would you really not vote for Ryan Gene because he likes Classic rock groups like AC/DC? If he also listens to Cheap Trick then he has my vote and my wife’s vote.
“courting the Queer crowd”
Tell us all how you really feel.
Maybe it’s you who’s in the wrong party.
Try the Taliban party.
“Is Williams into AC/DC as well”
Actually, I have a very classy taste in music. Jazz, Rock (Classic, New, 80s), Country (especially Rock Country), among a few others.
As far as “courting” the Log Cabin group is concerned… look… I need money for this campaign and whoever has money and is willing to invest anything into my race, I will hit them up.
I CANNOT self-fund my campaign like many other Republican candidates… or Democrat candidates for that matter.
If I could self-fund I would do it, but seeing as how I can hardly afford to purchase raman noodles every week… I can’t… thus I have to ask.
I’ve asked several GOP groups and PACs for some cash for the campaign, and even though asking the Log Cabins has been slightly controversial, I would rather take a check from them then take a check from any labor union.
Whether or not they donate to the campaign remains to be seen, but I’m just happy knowing that whether I win or lose in November it will end up being a win-win situation for me.
As always, I knew going into the race that it’d be an uphill battle and some higher-ups (a.k.a. Machine-esque types) told me that they won’t play here until they redistrict, or if registration changes before then.
So, for now I’m just having fun with it.
Ryan,
Have fun with it; just don’t embarrass us!
Anon poster,
BTW Not everything the Taliban beleives is bad.
Art,
Good job screwing your buddy Ryan. Just because he says something to you doesn’t mean you have to put it on a website i.e. (whoring himself to Log Cabin). Maybe you aren’t used to having friends but that move was pathetic.
Anon 12:06,
I have no intention of embarassing us.
If I do, we’re stuck in Central OC, it makes the party look bad, and it kills any chance I have of being elected into public office for the next 10 years.
Anon 12:17,
Art didn’t screw me over. He asked me if I wanted that posted and I told him to go for it.
Mike Lawson posted the quote at Liberal OC making fun of the comment. In hindsight, I prolly shouldn’t have phrased it that way to Mike, but to be honest… I actually kinda think it’s funny.
It may have been a mistake to some people, but in all honesty… they have money, are willing to spend it, and they want California to have a Republican majority in both houses just as bad as I do.
If anyone wants to talk to me about this personally, and vent about it, feel free to email me or call me.
Anon 12:17,
Art didn’t screw me. He asked me if I wanted that information posted and I told him to go for it.
Mike Lawson was the first who posted it over at Liberal OC, and at the time I kinda regretted telling him that. In hindsight, I actually think it’s kinda funny.
So, I asked the Log Cabins Republicans for money. Who cares? They have money, are willing to spend it, and want a Republican majority in California’s legislature. They want a majority just as much as other GOP groups want a majority, and just as much as I want a majority.
Love ’em or hate ’em, they are on our side and I appreciate that.
Ryan,
Have fun but don’t become the joke. You screw yourself out of future opportunities.
Ladies and Gentlemen:
I
I don’t have anything against the Log Cabins. I merely caution Ryan to carry himself like a nominee and not a college kid.
Ryan carries himself like a gentleman. Only a college kid can’t see that.
Samantha,
Your former residency and degree will buy you a cup of coffee for $1.50 like the rest of us, so don’t be so impressed with yourself. You can rationalize Ryan’s actions all you want, but any Republican candidate that is “Whoring around with the Log Cabin Club” (In his own words),is no candidate worthy of any Republican support.
Log – Referring to fecal matter; excretement; turds.
Cabin – Referring to a man’s anal cavity. Made for the exit only activity of defecation but used for deviant, queer behavior by confused males.
If confused males want to particpate in that kind of behavior, privately, that’s their choice and right to do so. But, if they as a group seek to force their ways on the rest of us as normal, that’s wrong and no amount PC trash talk makes it right. No Republican candidate should be anywhere near a special interest group that seeks to recruit more men into queer behavior.
Samantha, it sounds to me like you are trying to change the Republican party. Your belief system is obviously Democrat so I strongly encourage you to re-register as soon as possible and take Ryan with you if he beleves the same way you do.
Gay-Republican is an oxymoron.
Good to know ignorance is still alive in OC!
Just when I think ignorance is dead in OC political circles, it rears it’s ugly head!
Thanks, Anon, for reminding me why my work is so very important!
Ryan, a bit of unsolicited advice, get support whereever you can as long as you don’t sell out your core values. We’ve had some lengthy discussions (although it’s been a while – coffee?) so I know that you are solid in terms of those! The most important thing is being able to live with yourself no matter what the voters decide in November.
As for people like Anon, I am shocked (though I don’t know why I should be) by their lack of acceptance for their fellow man.
Anon is clearly focused on a sex act to a very unhealthy degree. To me it’s like spending time pondering what kinds of “unnatural acts” my grandparents might be participating in withing the confines of their own bedroom. Where do they fit in here? And what about lesbians? Such a bizarre fascination. I wonder what Freud would have to say.
In any case, I know that I’m wasting my keystrokes. One thing I’ve certainly learned is that it’s imposssible to reason with an unreasonable person.
Ryan just used a clich
Why would anyone be surprised at the reaction of the anon. poster who said gay Republican is an oxymoron? The GOP pumped up the evangelical vote by going after gay marriage and pandered to the anti-homosexual vote by calling a vote on a constitutional amendment that had no chance of sucess. Rove knew Bush needed a huge base turnout in Ohio and other battleground states and the one vote majority on the Romney-land Supreme Court and the showboat in Bagdhad By The Bay gave him exactly what the doctor ordered….red meat for the red crowd.
I admire the Log Cabin folks—they’re willing to stick with a party that not only opposes gay marriage but whose legislative caucuses regularly and almost unanimously vote against domestic partner benefits and laws prohibiting discrimination against gays and lesbians. While gay marriage has the public pretty evenly divided the other measures have widespread support in this state.
The only thing more laughable then anyone being surprised at the “lincolnlog” type of ill humour is the person who “speaks with authority.” Anyone who talks about the “yoke of the Democrat” has got to be sipping that CRA kool aid. Rather then castigating those still behind the Orange Curtain, she should spend her energy working to get GOP legislators and the State Republican Party to stop extending “the middle finger” every time there is a vote concerning gays and lesbians. Walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk.
Intorerance has been perfected by the left. Just look at the way you lefties are all jumping on the anon poster for speaking up for what he/she believes in. Yeah, you people are real tolerant as long everyone is afraid to say “The king has no clothes on.”
There is nothing, abosolutely nothing “gay” about homosexual behavior. It’s queer and un-natural. If you want to participate in that or want to condone that, that’s your personal right. But, others have a right to disagree with you and call it what it is – queer behavior. Thank God the Republican Party at least has it right on that issue.
Just because an issue is “poplular” or evenly divided, doesn’t make it right.
The king has no clothes on!
Don’t compromise your morals & ethics, Ryan. Especially just for money. At the end of the day (and your life), there’ only one guy you need approval from, that’s the Good Lord.
You’ve gotta admit though… in this election season Ryan has coined the phrases:
“Tea and crumpets” while referring to Lynn Daucher.
“Can Carlos come out and play?” referring to the fact that he needed to talk to Jose for Carlos to endorse him.
Now it’s “Whoring out to the Log Cabins.”
Whether you think he’s the right sort of candidate or not, he’s certainly the top quoteable candidate of this election cycle.
Keep the soundbytes coming, Ryan!
oh jesus!
Anon at 11:49 PM,
Ryan, shut up and let it die down.
