Orange Juice blogger stops Mike Harrah from polluting Santa Ana with asbestos
This has to be my favorite story of the year! Orange Juice blogger Thomas Gordon, who is soon to be my alternate at the OC GOP Central Committee, stopped developer Mike Harrah from polluting Santa Ana with asbestos, by calling in the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) as reported in the L.A. Times.
Gordon knows what he is talking about – he is a building inspector for the Los Angeles Unified School District, and he specializes in asbestos. I know a thing or two about that as well, as the company I work for specializes in asbestos abatement.
Harrah’s demolition contractor made a huge mistake, and Gordon called them on it. Their initial tests showed no asbestos, but it was there after all, under the floor. Once they ripped up the floor of the church that is being demolished so that Harrah can build his abomination, the One Broadway Plaza (OBP) building, they should have run additional tests. But they didn’t. I wonder if the demolition company’s workers were wearing the correct personal protective equipment (PPE)? I doubt it. Somebody should have run this by Cal/OSHA as well.
Kudos to Gordon for doing the right thing! He was not an opponent of OBP, so Harrah cannot use that as an excuse. Shame on Harrah and his friends on the Santa Ana City Council, including Mayor Miguel “Missing in Action” Pulido for trying to cover up this mess.
Good for you Thomas! Great job! I was against the building, but the people voted for it, therefore Mike does have a right to build. But the people did not give him a carte blanche to pollute this city and put children and residents at risk of a deadly chemical. If he is going to do the job, he needs to do it right!
> Before demolition began, Harrah surveyed the site and properly removed asbestos that was found, Cherry said. **agency spokeswoman Tina Cherry.**
I hope Tina can provide proof that can be verified.
Even the OCR picture of the site in today
Weird how Miguel Pulido can fly half way around the world to look at parks while sitting on the Great Park Board for Irvine.
Even weirder is the fact that Miguel Pulido sits on the AQMD board and won’t drive a couple blocks over from his Floral Park home to intervene in his own city.
Interesting how a LAUSD employee (i.e., government employee) can spend work time posting to a blog.
“Interesting how a LAUSD employee (i.e., government employee) can spend work time posting to a blog.”
I’ve been off all week..
If your interested I’ll show you my pay stub when it comes.
Oh….That would mean coming out from behind your Anonymousness.
You could call and complain….
Others have done it and I was investigated and it was proven that I only access this on my own time.
What’s your real agenda?
Anon:
That is just weak.
State your points, bring up good discussion, but to make an attempt to discredit someone based on their employment situation or day of time is just lame.
C’mon, I disagree with Thomas on almost everything, but I try to stick with the issues as much as possible, I think you should try to do the same, it will make your posts more valid.
I think Mike Harrah or his alter ego Miguel Pulido are posting.
Thank you Mr. Gordon for looking out for our community and especially our kids. We need more people like you!
Is Claudia Alavarez going to interfere with the DA handling of Harrah’s criminal case? After all, Mike Harrah gave Alvarez thousands of dollars and she also works for the DA.
If Alvarez is genuinely interested in effective governance she should be demanding staff to properly oversee this project. Unfortunately the large sums of money she took from Harrah, during her last two failed Assembly bids, creates problems for Cash & Carry Claudia.
Look to Alvarez to recognize Harrah at a future council meeting. After all she did reward Crevier at the last council meeting.
“To be taken seriously, you must first offend. If you do not, people will say, “Oh, he’s just like so-and-so, with perhaps a touch of such-and-such”, and forget about you entirely; while if you touch a raw nerve, you at least know that you are on the pathway to the brain. The point is, men will rarely think new thoughts without a jolt, and if you expect them to think the ones you have, then you must first crash your way into their consciousness.”
I agree!
I wonder if this scandal will hurt Solorio in his race against Ryan Gene Williams? Solorio needs to speak out against Harrah for polluting our city…
“I wonder if this scandal will hurt Solorio in his race against Ryan Gene Williams? Solorio needs to speak out against Harrah for polluting our city…”
Jeez, Art, give it a break. This is not a scandal for Solorio – he isn’t doing this. Stop bashing for the sake of bashing, it doesn’t become you. You are capable of so much more integrity than this last post.
8:04,
Solorio voted for OBP. Now Mike Harrah, the developer of OBP, has polluted our city with asbestos. Solorio now needs to stand up and denounce the scurrilous actions of Harrah – or else this will indeed become a campaign issue. There were a lot of Democrats opposed to OBP. Solorio should remember that…
This blog loses credibility every time anybody suggests that RG Williams is a viable contender in the 69th. Let’s be honest, he doesn’t stand a chance.
I seriously doubt that Democrats will not vote for Solorio. Solorio had Mike Garcia, SEIU, behind his effective and successful ground campaign during the primary. Solorio has a tremendous backing from the unions and they were not about to give up a seat in the assembly to Crazy Claudia. Regardless of what happens to OBP, Solorio is what we are stuck with. Thank you Thomas for making sure Harrah doesn’t pollute our city.
11:12,
Granted, Solorio should win, but he has weak points, including the OBP vote, the eminent domain deals to rich Republican car dealers, etc. If Ryan had the money to play with that Daucher is going to waste, he could give Solorio a run for the money…

I have to agree with Art.
If Ryan had the money… sadly he doesn’t.
It’s a shame that he’s getting the bad rep that he’s received for not being an independently wealthy, self-funded candidate who backs loyal republicans like mike carona.
perhaps when or if he even realizes the GOP is not going to help him turn central county back over, he’ll join the other side!
Don’t think Solorio’s support to approve OBP will impact his bid for assembly. Let’s get real …
at Monday’s council meeting Sal Tinajero – much talked about Santa Ana mayoral candidate – proclaimed the “we” brought the OBP vote to the people.
Sal did not. Sal did not make any effort to help secure signatures to place the OBP project before the people to vote on. In fact, Sal supported Measure A.
It appears Sal cannot remember who or what he endorses, and that alone should disqualify him as a candidate for Santa Ana mayor.
Sal is merely the puppet of Claudia Alvarez, Lisa Bist and Audrey Noji.
10:59,
There is no way I could support Sal Tinajero for any public office. I hope someone else will run against Pulido.
Saw Tinajero last week and he said he’s NOT running for mayor. Looks like only Stanley Fiala again.
I think Robert Henson and Dave Lopez and Winston Covington and Stanley Fiala and Zeke Hernandez and Jim Walker and Florence Leech and Sean Mill and Armando De La Libertad and Sam Romero and Miles Leech and Rueben Martinez and Pat Mill and Lupe Moreno and Don Cribb should all run for Mayor! Any one of them would stand up for the community and the little guy (not to be confused with the little Sheriff) and be our voice in the wilderness.
I too saw Sal Tinajero last week and he told me he was definitely running for Mayor.
I saw Sal Tinajero last week and he said he really needs to start running or bikiing or something
Just kidding…I didn’t really see Sal Tenajero last week…but I do suspect he will run for Mayor and start running. You can bet on it.

Maybe Sal can endorse Miguel Pulido and Stanley Fiala and they can endorse him back.
When Sal does something for this city, wake me up.

Remember.
This is the same guy who “endorsed” Claudia Alvarez.
I’ll pass on Sal.
“Solorio has a tremendous backing from the unions and they were not about to give up a seat in the assembly to Crazy Claudia.”
A little birdy told me that unless Jose hands over a fat contract for it’s members, it won’t push as hard for him.
So, will Jose agree to a big payday for union members at your expense just so he can go to Sacramento?
And just what has Jose done for Santa Ana lately?
How sad that he can put together a
Fundraiser at Texas Mexican Restaurant in Sacramento, but can’t return a citizens email or phone calls.
A month ago he answered my email like this:
I’m bombarded with emails and calls right now, but I do look forward to talking to you about these issues.
Thanks for your continued involvement in Santa Ana.
JS
I’ve never heard from him again.
Hey Jose…..Remember us?
Santa Ana Citizens.
Your opponent returns calls. You should try it.
Watch the rebroadcast of last Monday’s Council meeting when Sal addressed the council regarding mayoral terms limits.
Sal “Flip-Flop” Tinajero is running for mayor.
I find it utterly amusing that Sal tipped his hat to Audrey Noji, the woman who stabbed him the back last December when the school board voted for officers.
Sal believed he had the votes to be board president. In fact, he was so confident that his wife and family were in the audience that evening to share in his victory.
What he didn’t count on was the backstabbing tactics of Noji. It was a sorry sight to witness.
So, why is Sal singing Audrey’s praises at a council meeting? Did Audrey, along with her gal pals Claudia Alvarez and Lisa Bist agree to support Sal in their zeal to run Miguel out of office?
Flip-Flop Sal needs a refresher course in Politics 101.
Personally, I think Sal is a good guy. I believe he cares about the community and he cares about Children in Santa Ana.
I also believe Sal has one major draw back which may prevent him from being more than a school board member. His ambition for higher office is huge. This leads him to switch sides and “go with the flow” as long as he has a shot at running for higher office.
This is detrimental.
I too heard from a little bird and it told me that Mike Garcia, SEIU, was warned about Solorio not being a man of his word. That little bird also told me that the Union has been doing some checking on Solorio. Mike Garcia, SEIU, was warned by a Sacramento Lobbyist that Solorio would use all the Union help to get elected and then turn his back on them. Will Solorio agree to a big payday for the Union? Absolutely!
