Assembly candidate is the big man on campus

My readers might recall that a post I wrote about GOP State Assembly Candidate Ryan Gene Williams mentioned that he is a student at Orange Coast College, and that the student newspaper at his campus was going to be publishing an article about him. That issue is now out, and I am enclosing below the actual copy, which I found online at http://www.orangecoastcollege.edu/NR/rdonlyres/DCC68A50-6E2E-4152-9587-3AE0924FD63E/0/0208.pdf.

Orange Coast College freshman Ryan Gene Williams is running for the California State Assembly in the upcoming 2006 midterm elections.

The 20-year-old Texas native is seeking the Republican nomination for the Assembly seat of the 69th District, which includes all of Santa Ana and parts of Anaheim and Garden Grove.

Incumbent Tom Umberg, D-Orange County, is vacating the seat to run for state Senate.

Williams said he decided to run for the office after he saw Umberg speak on campus. When Williams debated an issue in the session, Umberg told him to check his facts.

“I did,” Williams said, “and I found out his seat would be open.”

So far he has about 200 of the 1,500 republican signatures he needs to get a Republican nomination. He has no campaign manager, although he is working on it and has raised $2,500 so far for his campaign, he said.

So far Williams is the only person running for the Republican nomination. The Democrats have four high profile candidates in the primary
