It is illegal to fish with a net in California!
Matt “Jerbal” Cunningham is not only a blogger over at Red County, he is also an Orange County Parks and Recreation Commissioner. He wrote a blog post back in October about some guys who were fishing the Santa Ana River – using nets, which is illegal.
Jerbal wrote:
Last Friday, I saw something new: some men fishing with cast nets — those round nets with weights at the end and thrown into the water by the fisherman.
There were five or so men hanging around one of those artificial waterfalls, which is where the river is usually deepest. One guy was on the other side standing on one of the concrete dragon’s teeth, casting his net.
So what’s the problem? How about an endangered fish, called the “Santa Ana Sucker,” which “is found only in a handful of rivers in southern California,” according to Wikipedia.
Did Jerbal contribute to the needless death of these rare fish?
Their range is extremely restricted; they are native only to the Los Angeles, San Gabriel, Santa Ana, and Santa Clara River systems in southern California. Populations have been lost from several parts of the rivers, so that they now only live in the upper portion of the Los Angeles and San Gabriel drainages, and the lower part of the Santa Ana River, especially areas with additional water effluent from sewage treatment plants.
Busted! Jerbal, as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, should have done something. Instead he took their pictures and wrote a blog post about it.
And he didn’t even tell the fishermen that using nets to catch fish is illegal in California.
How very disappointing…
He’s on payroll for Rep. John Campbell’s campaign.
John’s also a anti-parks and wildlife activist:

Here’s John over in New Jersey opposing their new National Park. (link above)
Hey John, where are OUR TOWN HALL MEETINGS FOR HEALTH CARE? Maybe you could START to represent your district instead of Birthers?! Maybe you could hold information Town Halls on health insurance reform instead of fomenting lies about health care services in the UK?! Maybe you could get some stimulus money going for JOBS at our local Great Park, instead of trying to thwart National Parks in ANOTHER STATE- NEW JERSEY?!
Get a clue!
Red,
Good catch! Most Republicans are anti-environment and natural resources…but Campbell did vote to blow over $700 million on saving wild horses that are not native to this country!
Wow! I thought Santa Ana Sucker was a reference to the folks who keep re-electing Miguel Pulido!
There is little to admire or praise about a paid political pundit such as Jerbal Cuttingham. He has no credibility.
Robin,
Good point! I am reminded that the same Supervisor who put Jerbal on the Parks and Rec Commission, Bill Campbell, also tried to put Monsignor John Urell on a County Commission, even though Urell covered up for molesters!
And of course Jerbal ended up starting the “Urell Amigos” and he inadvertently outed the names of a score of molestation victims on the Urell Amigos website…
Hi Robin Marcario! Open any absentee ballots recently?
And why does Art want those Mexican immigrants turned into law enforcement? Why does he care more about a crummy little fish than about hard-working immigrants?
Jerbie, admit you screwed up and I’ll give you a free pass to the Santa Ana Zoo.
#7,
Jerbal missed out on an opportunity to inform these men about the law.
And why are you assuming they are immigrants? It sounds like you are racially profiling them. Which would make you a Jerbalito!
#6,
Are you proud of Andrew Do, the carpetbagger that beat Robin? His Lee’s Sandwiches restaurant in Stanton has received over 40 Orange County health violations!
Say what you will about Robin, but Do is a threat to public safety!
Robin would have been a far better Council Member than Do.
By the way, is it true that Do is still living in Santa Ana?
And Art hasn’t told Sitemeter that he knows his blog coding is artificially spiking his Sitemeter stats!
#11,
That isn’t even possible! Besides, our Google Analytics data is the same as our Sitemeter data. Sorry to disappoint you but we actually have readers, unlike the hacks at Red County and the Liberal OC…
You can also compare us on Alexa.com to the red and blue blogs in town. Just remember that Red County is a collection of some thirty blogs. Their blogs in Sacramento and Placer regularly get more readers than their Orange County blog! No bueno…
“So what you will about Robin”!!
What does Do’s carpetbagging have do with it? Doubt Art would be so carefree about it if someone had violated the secrecy of his ballot.
#13,
You mean the way that Jerbal violated the victims of Catholic molestation whose names he revealed during the “Urell Amigos” scandal?
What does that have to with what Robin Marcario did? Why can’t you ever stick to the point? Do you have ADD or something?
#15,
LOL! YOU are the one who first left the point…which is that Jerbal screwed up again! Apparently he is a royal screw-up!
Matt Cunningham outed sex-abuse victims.
If it’s spiking Sitemeter, then it’s spiking Google Analytics, too.
#18,
If anything is spiked, it is your red Kool Aid!
Boy, do I have a lot to learn. First I thought Tomahawk Diep was a fine person with a good heart – crap was I wrong!!
And for years, I thought Matt Cunningham was a smart and credible person but once again, I’m dead wrong. Art, did you see Matt’s recent posts over on Red County, defending Tomahawk Diep’s action by spinning it to “an enthusiastic new councilman trying to help a constituent and got a bum rap”?
#11 is Jerbel in disguise.
Further it’s sickening that he is on the Parks Commission.
I will post this question to Matt Directly:
1) Why do you want to serve on the OC parks and harbors commissions?
2) How many parks have you visited in the past 100 days? Which ones?
3) What troubles you most about the state of OC parks?
4) What expertise do you bring to the commission?
I could go on.
But this is like putting Miguel Pulido on the OCTA board (Oh, thats been done). And having the Register write a fluff piece on his “ride the bus day”.
What a WASTE of public services putting this guy on the board.
I have never met this Jerbal Cunningham character, but he must be major league stooge. He obviously doesn’t even know that it’s illegal to fish with a net in California. And what qualifies him to be on a Parks and Harbors Commission, he should be fired immediately.
#21 is Paul Lucas in disguise, still upset Janet Nguyen didn’t give him the county parks commission appointment he was hoping for. Best decision Janet ever made.
Who is Paul Lucas?

Good luck with this one Michelle!
#21 brings up a good point.
Why is Jerbal on a parks comission?
Is he a parks kinda guy?
Do you have a Mountain Bike Matt?
What kind?
Where do you ride?
Where do you have your kids birthday’s: OC Parks or Chuck E Cheese (or Dave and Busters)?
Why Doesn’t Matt Talk OC parks issues Instead DeVore Campbell posts?
Elect a citizen not a HACK!
Zero doubt “gg voter” is Matt Cunningham….just as lovable as a fly. Matt is apparently just as blog obsessed as Tomahawk Tyler Diep.
