As I didn’t pre-load a Weekend Open Thread for this week, this interesting post on takeovers and sabotage of public power utilities will have to do. It’s pretty good stuff.
If you want to get the pretty good joke (one that isn’t a joke), watch the video.
This is your Weekend Open Thread. Talk about the above, or anything else you’d like, within broad bounds of decency and decorum. No Dearthwatch this week. Dearthwatch is sleeping.
About Greg Diamond
Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that.
Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too.
He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.)
His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
Last annual fundraising dinner I attended, Solorio copped a handshake from me as well, so don’t be surprised if you see one tonight featuring him and me. (I’m on good behavior tonight.) At least after the shutdown more people will understand the howling from July.
Yeah — 2011 is the one where I joined the demonstration (not really a protest, at least for many of us) outside and then went in for the dinner.
This year I wasn’t going to go because I couldn’t responsibly afford a ticket and felt that under the circumstances (my being an officer) that meant that I shouldn’t go. This went over very poorly with my friends, who ganged up on me. I protested by wearing a startling melon orange shirt with my suit.

It is time for party leaders on both sides to get over themselves, check the egos at the door, and work together for the good of the people who depend on those leaders to move our communities forward. That someone attending a dinner would even be newsworthy is juvenile in the extreme, and I am horrified that the writer I usually find to be very reasonable (for a Liberal) would even take the time to pursue this line of thought. While nobody at the June GOP Flag Day dinner voted for Solorio, he is still their elected voice on the floor during a vote (like it or not) and there is no harm and indeed great good to be found in going out and meeting people in their own comfort zone. I don’t often think much of Solorio, but I think better of him after seeing that article (I missed Flag Day this year and did not realize a Dem had attended. Possibly because Republicans failed to throw a hissy fit about “the enemy” among them? Who is the closed minded party again?)
If we cannot attend each others’ dinners and discover what others NOT of like mind find important then we condemn ourselves to perpetual ignorance, and frankly snobbery. I would go so far as to challenge both sides to buy tables at each others’ dinners, work the room, get to know each other as people. I very nearly asked around to see if I could buy a seat at someone’s table for the Truman Dinner, out of curiosity. In the end decided against it primarily because i had been down with the flu all week and didn’t want to share a waning virus, but I saw no partisan disgrace in hauling my conservative self into a Liberal-fest. I also attend weddings at the house of worship of other religions, it does not mean I am converting to Catholicism or Judaism. How stupid does partisanship get around here?!
This is why Richard and I host “Sunday dinner,” because it puts a human face on the often anonymous screen personas that find it easy to lob word bombs at each other. When i have a big decision to make I will deliberately invite guests from a wide variety of perspectives, who the Hell wants to live in an echo chamber?! I think two Sundays back was about the most diverse group EVER in the years we have been hosting, and we got some great conversations and new direction from that dinner. (as long as we stayed away from Obamacare and abortion.) Yes my liberal friends will sometimes propose a course of action I cannot agree with, and in defending my position I am forced to outline WHY I support the conservative option for the subject at hand. They often leave the conversation equally as committed to their own values, and we part ways at the end of the evening with mutual respect and a better understanding for where they are coming from. Can we not disagree on issues without hating each other as people? When did we begin seeing each other as mortal enemies that cannot even socialize with each other at a dinner function (even if it is a fundraiser?)
With all of the genuinely critical issues that our nation faces today, is the idea of someone wanting to know what others find of value some kind of scandal? The blog-o-sphere has the opportunity to get all of us talking, why are we wasting that time and energy in something that keeps us locked into our differences instead of looking for areas where we can agree and move forward? Save the fighting for the big stuff.
I couldn’t agree more Cynthia!
That’s exactly why I attended ‘drinking liberally”, when I was feeling better.
Put a face on it as well as discussions in a personal environment that fosters greater understanding for all of us.
I went to Tim Donnelly’s fundraiser Friday night, about which I’m writing and have spectacularly mixed feelings. But the Minuteman-Teabagger gubernatorial candidate is really proud of having been able to work with Democrats (whom he secretly calls “Marxist progressives”) over the last three years … and this is one of his bon mots about it:
“Let me tell you how you have lunch with someone that you disagree with 80% of the time. While they’re talking about what you disagree with them on, THAT’S WHEN YOU EAT. And then when you’re done eating, you talk about the 20% of things you DO agree on.”
And if you can REALLY finesse it, respond to the 80% with your mouth full, and they will interpret ” Mrffff MfMf Muht Mett Mett Mff” as agreement!
(No, I don’t get many political lunch invites, wonder why?)
I don't remember that. Jesus H. that creep was useless. Always somebody's puppet.
Yeah, 'member this? This 2012 Brandman ad speaks for itself. Click for larger image.

This is the last one I went to, where I got to talk to Barney Frank: http://www.orangejuiceblog.com/2010/09/scenes-from-the-2010-truman-dinner/
Then in 2011 we stood outside and did “Occupy the Democratic Party”… that’s when i first met Diamond in person… http://www.orangejuiceblog.com/2011/10/scenes-from-occupy-the-democratic-party-truman-dinner-2011/
Since then I’ve kinda spaced those things out…

I’ll have a write up soon.

I like the simple division between looters and stewards.
Of course I’m not sure where to put the sack of rocks dummies who may actually mean well but have left the backdoor to the store unlocked.
