Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas Will Be Keynote Speaker at DPOC Truman Dinner

U.S. Rep Joaquin Castro of Texas

U.S. Rep Joaquin Castro of Texas, not to be confused with Mayor Julian Castro of San Antonio — as if anyone would do that!

You may remember Rep. Joaquin Castro from his giving the Keynote Address at the 2012 Democratic Convention.  You’d be wrong; that was his identical twin brother, Mayor Julian Castro of San Antonio.  Orange County Democrats will now get to see whether Joaquin can match Julian’s chops in the Keynote spot.  (Don’t worry too much about it: he can.)

Putting aside people who might buy into tables for ten, here are the prices:

$1000 Supporter – 1 VIP Reception Ticket, 1 premier seating dinner ticket, recognition in Program
$500 Friend – 2 premier seating dinner tickets, recognition in program
$250: Ally – 1 premier seat dinner ticket, recognition in program.
$150: General Admission
$100: Sustaining Member/ Member of OCYD

(I know that I’m biased, being on the DPOC Board, but — as $100/$150 events go, this is generally one of those more worth the money. And Castro is a serious draw.  For those who think that the two parties are just alike, especially as related to Latinos, I heartily invite you to stack up Rep. Castro against Texas Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who keynoted at the OCGOP’s recent equivalent annual differ.  Everyone except maybe Jose Solorio can easily tell them apart.)

The news is now public (whew!), so let’s go to the press release from Party Chair Henry Vandermeir:

I am excited to announce that Texas Congressional Representative Joaquin Castro will be the keynote speaker at our 19th Annual Harry S Truman Awards Dinner on October 19th.

Like Orange County, Texas has been a bastion for conservatism but is now on the path of turning blue. As his state moves closer towards the blue column, Representative Castro will help us celebrate Orange County’s efforts towards that same goal.

Congressman Castro debuted on the national scene last year when he and his twin brother, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, were featured as rising stars during the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.

The son of community activists, Joaquin’s commitment to public service runs deep. After earning a degree from Stanford and his JD from Harvard Law School, he returned to Texas. At only 28, he was elected into the Texas Legislature. In 2012 he was elected to represent Texas’s 20th Congressional District, while his twin brother Julian was re-elected to his second term as Mayor of San Antonio

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too. He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.) His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
