Blue, blue, my world is blue....
A Facebook post from victorious attorney Katrina Foley has just reported that the Court of Appeal has denied the City of Costa Mesa’s attempt to get the charter vote onto the June ballot, where it would enjoy a smaller and more Righeimer-friendly electorate. The charter will instead face the general election electorate in November.
Foley asked the question: “I wonder how much that loss cost us as taxpayers?”
I don’t know — but it seems like a good time to start a betting pool. What do you all think the final tab will be?
And what will the forces of anti-democracy do next? A worried nation wonders.
About Greg Diamond
Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that.
Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too.
He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.)
His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
So what was the City Clerk’s role in this embarrassment?
She made a clerical error, of course.
Anyone who wants background should check out Geoff West’s “A Bubbling Cauldron,” which has been the go-to site on Costa Mesa in the Righeimer era. His most recent post, which will address your question, is here: http://abubblingcauldron.blogspot.com/2012/03/city-clerk-placed-on-administrative.html
Julie Folchik…..sad. Everyone needs a patsy when their best plans are laid to waste.
The truth is: November folks. June – Nah….not this time!
Sounds like Ringheimer went to the John Moorlach school of How to waste tax payers money on a loser Lawsuit.
Don’t worry — Geoff West reports that the Council is on the case!
Here’s the list of new revenues among which the Council may consider to pay for, among other things, this doomed vanity lawsuit:

“Conservative government” at work! I’d laugh if I didn’t feel like crying.
LOOKING at tax revenue ideas is not the same as VOTING for them is it Greg? Don’t get ahead of yourself. Wait for the discussion and the vote. This was put on the agenda by Righeimer after his liberal opponents kept calling for higher taxes and fees so why complain? He is merely calling for consideration of items. It is a good move by him, shows he is listening. As to what the anti democracy forces will do next, why don’t you ask her? Are you SURE charter will be on November ballot? Ever heard of special elections? Hmmm….
It doesn’t matter what he asks for, he’ll shoot it down and complain that the unions are to blame & that the City needs more money for the roads and parks. Hey Riggy how about those growing legal bills? And as far as a special election, sure Riggys will be all for it, because hell it’s not his money and if it was he would just stiff em like he does in his private life.
Was is just me or did anyone else happen to observe the childlike-temper-tantrum meltdown he displayed from the Dias when he (huffed and puffed) for the consideration of these items? It was clear he did this to spite Wendy Leece.
Only successful thing I would trust this guy to do right is steal my wallet and then help me look for it.
*deadwhitemale: Special Elections? There you go again…with another great idea to waste taxpayer money. How much might that little fast track election cost the taxpayers of Costa Mesa? Hey, thought you said Costa Mesa needed more austrenity measures, not ridiculous misuse of money from the City coffers?
R&A: I never said anything about “austrenity” measures being needed. Also, I am not calling for a special election, just said it could happen. If it does it is the clerk’s fault for missing an easy deadline.
It’s a good good thing it’ll be on the November ballot. It’s just a fact that more people come out to vote then, and this is a big decision for the people of Costa Mesa. AND it gives them more time to learn about this
bullshitcharter and make up their own minds.
