Dawn Miller
So, your humble OJ correspondent finally got a call back on the Willard Intermediate controversy last week, after nearly a month of trying – not from controversial Willard Intermediate Principal Dennis Cole nor SAUSD Superintendent Jane Russo, both of whom I’d left repeated messages for – but from Dawn Miller, who has the title of “Assistant Supervisor Secondary Education” and is said to be quite close to Cole.
To jog your memory, the original controversy was this: The extremely religious Principal Cole had convinced a few teachers to lead a lunchtime, student, Bible-study prayer club named “Jaguars for Jesus.” This is forbidden in public schools by several Supreme Court decisions, as an unconstitutional breach of the separation of church and state. Teachers can do a club like that by themselves; students can also do the same; but to have teachers leading students in religious activities in a public school just smacks too much of the government endorsing a particular religion, or opposing non-religion. Very simple.
Then it got worse in early December: Reacting to complaints about this situation, Cole banned ALL student clubs, the chess club, gardening club, “Claws” club, lamely turning the constitutionality argument sideways: that it was unconstitutional for there to be one kind of club and not another. It was impossible, especially given his refusal to answer any questions, to interpret this as anything but the pettiest vindictiveness – if I can’t have mine, nobody can have anything. (Hear his argument here, first few minutes.)
Well, now what spokeswoman Dawn Miller says, weeks later, is that once complaints came in about the illegality of Jaguars For Jesus, the administration realized they didn’t really have any “by-laws” for forming student clubs, and that they’d never even had any clubs till just recently. (Is that true?) And that now school’s starting again, the ASB will be looking at all the banned clubs quickly to see if they can get them started up again properly. And that when Jaguars For Jesus comes back, it will be run by students as it should be. I’m sure with all the Willard staff and faculty that come to this blog, we’ll see if this really happens.
[Oh, and she also admitted these same unconstitutional teacher-led student religious clubs probably do happen at other schools in the district – interesting. Maybe Willard’s just unique in having faculty and staff who care about the constitution and religious freedom? And/or a zealot principal insistent on pushing things to the limit?]

Meanwhile, the Orange Juice Blog has become the place for Willard and other SAUSD faculty & staff to share their stories and air their grievances in safe anonymity, and they’ve been quite compelling to hear. Numerous commenters, without exception, paint a harrowing picture of Willard as a low-performing school with a dictatorial principal intent on turning teachers against each other, privately browbeating and intimidating them, aggressively bringing his own religion into the school, and retaliating against any employee who questions him. They also say that no matter what he does he’ll always be uncritically supported both by Superintendent Russo and by Cole’s old friend Dawn Miller. Teachers and staff have now taken to carrying small voice-activated recorders on them (as many already did) as he also has a habit of denying what he says to them privately. Well, there’s no big news in today’s particular post, I just wanted to create a new forum for Willard people to talk this new year, since there are so many hundreds of comments on the old posts already. Maybe things will get better this year; maybe the clubs will be re-instated quickly and the Constitution respected, and the Principal treat faculty and staff differently now that he knows many of them are armed with small recording devices. I think we need more teachers/coaches teaching Bible studies in SAUSD, not less. I remember in the 1970’s and 80’s coaches like Bill Hill at Valley High and Tom Meiss at Valley and Santa Ana High used to hold Bible studies for their players and Bill Hill gave each Senior player a Bible when the graduated from High School, and AIA doing assemblies on campus. I bet if you talked to those former players you would find that most of them (like me) found that the Bible studies helped me during those days when the pull of the gangs was strongest. It’s interesting to talk about the law, church and state, etc but while you have a nice debate we have young children here in Santa Ana in need of adult leaders willing to take a stand.

The pay is more than sufficient, class size does not matter when the quality of teaching is poor as we all have seen with QEIA and HPSG…4 billion to 480 schools in California without ANY increased results (Rand Report). And as far as the funding goes public schools cost much more than private schools in a lot of cases!

And by the way, the hispanic kids are doing very well in school but because of the fact that TEACHERS and the district will not reclassify the kids out of ESL because they would lose their nice big fat funding for title 1 and all the other ridiculous grants for ESL learner’s the kids are stuck learning to speak English instead of reading, writing and math!

Because of my money YOU get to walk into a class room everyday and do a lousy job!
There are VERY few good teachers in the public school system in California because if there were, you would not rank 48th! Yes, you don’t have great parents to work with, but that is NO excuse! You can rant and rave about a bunch of kids and a few teachers having a religious club, but not when it come to the actual poor quality of the eduction system!

a hand full of us do have recorders and more are looking into purchasing one or using their cell phones. Vern is unequivocally correct on Mr. Cole’s profile, he is a morbid liar.
Dennis Cole went as far as getting a counselor suspended without pay and called her an immoral person. How dare him! Immoral is what he did to her, but of-course the district believed him and his lies. This counselor is 100% more moral than Dennis Cole will ever be in his life time.
He created a hostile work environment; he created the need for Willard staff to carry recorders. If it wasn’t for his lies and malicious intent, we would not feel the need to protect ourselves against someone who speaks with a FORKED TONGUE. He is the devil in sheep clothing.
Now, a handful of parents are recognizing the same fictitious personality Mr. Cole sold to the parents his first school year as principal. He promised change, he promised the world.
What he didn’t tell the parents was, he would be as evil, immoral and vindictive with the students as he was and continues to be the staff and Willard students. I have been in the front office talking with the attendance clerk, when Mr. Cole radios the front office to tell them he is sending a student to them and to have him sit and wait in-front of his office.
After Egress, I stop by the office, and the same child is still there, waiting for Mr. Cole. I get the full story the next day, when I see the same child in my class and I ask him what happen. Why was he sitting by Mr. Cole’s office? He tells that he didn’t have a lanyard and his school I.d ripped. Mr. Cole warned him to buy a new lanyard and I.d, he doesn’t have the 10 dollars to purchase the 2 items, so Mr. Cole kept him out of class for 2 whole periods and at 3’oclock, 3 hours later sends him up to Mrs. Bohinc for a Saturday school.
This child is one of many that need to be in class, he can’t afford to miss any precious classroom time, but because his parents don’t have the financial means to purchase the 10 dollar items the school mandates, Mr. Cole finds it feasible to pull him out of class for almost 2 hours. This is IMMORAL.

My 3rd. period class asked me this past Tuesday on who the “guy checking dress code” was. I didn’t know who they were referring too. Until one of my kids tells me the new principal.
I corrected them; I told them he was the new A.P taking over Mr. Vicario’s duties.
then, another student asked me, why we had so many administrators. I explained to him, as best as I could.
Then the whole class joins in and asked me; why Mr. Cole doesn’t hire more teachers instead of Administrators. I didn’t know what to say, but I do agree with them.
I don’t know if we are unique and no other school in the district is using their transformation money for administration instead of hiring more teachers for the classroom. I know for a fact we have about 8 empty classrooms here. I am sure; we could use more teachers to teach and fewer Administrators.
Question to anyone with the answer?
The new A.P checked dress code every morning this past week in the lunch area. One of the items he was checking for was I.d’s and lanyard. If it is mandatory for students to wear their lanyards and I.d’s shouldn’t the school provide them for free if they get lost, stolen or ripped due to poor quality?

Actually, I think it’s the other way around since Linkletter came waaay before Cosby. He had a way of getting kids to tell their family “secrets” that made every show worth seeing. I agree with 7th grade Teacher regarding the lanyard/ID issue. I don’t think students are required to pay for anything for their public education. If so, it needs to be asked as a “donation” While we’re on the topic of outlandish dress code rules. Since when aren’t students allowed to have high lights or wear make-up! I have seen girls washing their faces of make-up because they were told to do so. A couple were my students and their make-up was far from extreme! Also, one of my boys got reprimanded for wearing a faux hawk and told to comb out his hair.

I have had several girls in my classroom held over for detention and one even received a Friday Central Detention for wearing make up. Keep in mind this is one of my best students, she has never been in trouble in her 3 years at Willard. She was distraught, she didn’t know what to tell her parents. She couldn’t stop crying. She couldn’t understand why Melissa Bohinc had such an attitude and made such a big deal, when she had her parents permission to wear make up.
If they have their parents permission to wear make up, why is the school Administrators interfering and infringing in parental rights.

I agree, Mr. Cole is not doing our students justice. He is putting his person beliefs into the day to day operations of Willard. He expects us to take 5 minutes to check for dress code violations such as students not wearing lanyards or their student identification cards around their necks.
5 minutes out of a 35 minute period, plus 8 periods, plus a school calendar year.
One only needs to do the math. Mr. Cole and his administration are more concern on what the kids are wearing than educating them and preparing them for what awaits them in high school.
I also, will not waste precious instructional minutes to reprimand my students for loosing or having had their I.d’s stolen from their P.E lockers because their Physical Education teachers are to lazy and have not issued lockers all year long.
Kids are constantly getting their personal property, such as P.E clothes, shoes, cellphones, lanyards and books taken or stolen from P.E because they don’t have a locker to store their property during their Physical Education classes. P.E teachers use to issue lockers to their students for use during P.E, but not anymore.
Why?
Only they and Dennis Cole knows.

We would fully support his ideas and extremes to improve the test scores, but his a bully. And, bully victims eventually fight back.
I go to church twice a week. I do volunteer work for my church. I have always treated my neighbors, friends and complete strangers with the respect and dignity, I want in return. Is this to much to ask for. Why is it, that Dennis Cole can’t seem to get this. Once he sets his on you, be careful. We will mistreat, lie, harass and manufacture ways to reprimand you.

He kept on writing her up for no just cause; to the point that she needed medical attention for stress and had to apply for Federal Family and Medical Leave Act and the California Family Rights Act to keep all her medical appointments without being retaliated against. And, all due to Mr. Cole’s continued harassment and manufactured reprimands.
Cesar De La Riva
In my 15 years of teaching, I have not met or known a Classified employee who takes more pride in his duties. He is always helping parents beyond the contour of his office. Cesar has been in charge of collecting and distributing gifts’ to the needy or homeless Willard students for the past 8 years. Something he does for free and from his heart, he doesn’t get a stipend or any other type of monetary compensation. Cesar is a positive influence to all Willard students.

being the vindictive immoral individual he is. He takes Cesar our of his office a month before the holiday break. Doesn’t give him an office. No place for him to do his job. Cesar is bouncing back and forth from the main office computers to the computer lab and to any open computer he can find to do his daily duties. He is the registrar for crying out loud. Who in their right mind moves the school’s registrar out of his office and forces him to float for over a month without a place to register students. And, this is not because a lack of office space. There are at least 3 open offices on the second floor.
In the mean time, Cesar continues to float. As of this afternoon He still didn’t have an office.

What Mr. Cole did to Moji is inconceivable. The days Mr. Cole is not in our is out for meetings. We pull together and work actually work harder and better than when he is here. He brings down teacher morale. Everyone feels like we are walking on pins and needles, its is counter productive.
This is what he brings to the table.
If he really cared about the kids and wanted to make a difference.
Stay away, attend your meeting, leave Ms. Bohinc or Mr. Vicario in charge.

I had lunch with several of my friends this past weekend and they mentioned this blog because they know I used to work at Willard.
As we kept on talking about the environment Dennis Cole created, The Office manager topic came out. I guess they knew her from Santa Ana High.
They were surprise to hear that she was the Office Manager. They had nothing good to say. But they described her to perfection.
Screams alot,
blames everyone else for her inept office skills,
always getting off task,
anti children
yells at kids,
mistreat office staff,
no friends

It records in MP3 format, very clear almost cd quality.
I will record Maria next time she goes into her rant.
Is it true that Principal Cole told staff at a meeting that if 2 students were fighting and 2 others were gossiping staff should intervene with the 2 gossiping students before intervening with the 2 fighting students?
He seems to think that gossiping is more damaging. However, staff didn’t go for it.
Yes, that is the principal Dennis Cole.
Who directed the staff to stop the gossiping, before the fighters.
All of his ILT leaders are also talking smack behind his back, little does he know.
A teacher who was such a “team player” for Cole recently referred to Cole as a “snake”.
I think the teacher finally understood that it isn’t about creating a team. Cole is all about power and what it will take to get him to what he really wants – a district level job.
My hope is; Jane’s departure will force the school board to see the inhuman and immoral treatment Think Together call its service to our students.
Think Together promises the world on a silver platter, but only gives the Santa Ana Unified School Students a paper plate full of empty promises
and services that they can’t fulfill.
Perfect example:
Willard, Jane should have been fired long ago for allowing Think Together to come into the district and provided inadequate services to the students.
Willard has had 2 good teachers step down as the Think Together site Coordinator.
Why you might ask?
For the same reason, they are promised services, materials and personnel. At the end of the day, Think Together gives them nothing, but still expects
them to maintain their “numbers”. That’s all they care about. NUMBERS, that’s how they see the kids. As numbers. Think Together demands the
school site coordinator maintain the same number of students enrolled day, day out.
Think Together wants to fix the books, so it shows a high number of enrolled students in their after school program. When the site Coordinators
refused to cook the books for them, they brought in their on person to do it.
Every week Willard gets a new face. A new Think Together coordinator. They are kids strait out of college. No experience
and they are suppose to help our kids raise their test scores.
Sure, why not.
Take a look at the girl that is there now. From the minute she stepped on campus, she started barking orders at Willard staff. She is immature,
inexperience and has the manners of an uneducated, illiterate monkey. She has no social skills and she is whom Think Together sent to run the program.

This program: is this one of Cole’s church led/church sponsored ideas for replacing electives?
I do not wish to get in to name calling, but it certainly bothers me that a school administrator is allowed to foster practices totally out of place in the 21st century in regard to education, religion, and equal employment practices. Why doesn’t someone call him on fostering a hostile workplace and/or creating a climate of favoritism for a specific religion?
Mr. Cole is now assigned to Mendez for the 2011-2012 school year. Lots of happy folks at Willard and the best of luck to all at Mendez.

First, although I understand your frustration and inability to bring about change, it should be made clear that audio taping anyone without either their permission or a court order can get you in big trouble.
Second: with the new year starting in just a couple of weeks, you will be missing some wonderful staff members who were forced to leave because of Cole’s power and because there was no group effort to save them from the unfair policies.
“Clubs”, by the way, were Cole’s way of getting around having legitimate classes being taught by qualified teachers. The Staff, by vote, apparently, gave away their rights as well as the rights of the students to have qualified instructors for art, music, etc. In any school who “voted” away their rights, teachers set themselves up to always having to put in extra hours for FREE. After it becomes “usual and customary” these bargained for, and hard fought for rights will forever be lost.
As for the Santa Ana Teachers’ Organization, shame, shame, shame on you.
Nothing will happen if Cole starts up his religious crusade at Mendez unless someone complains loudly. That, unfortunately, may put their job in danger.
Apparently, Cole’s crusade for religion in public schools is only a problem if someone takes a stand against it and is willing to battle both SAUSD and Cole.
It still amazes me to think that SAUSD does not have a policy forbidding teacher led religious instruction during working hours.
This is not a Cole issue but an issue regarding SAUSD policy.
Ignoring the rulings by the Supreme Court should be a huge issue but if people aren’t willing to stand up for our rights we will lose the protection of those rights.
At one time, if we had a child in our classroom who we were fairly sure was being sexually abused at home by a parent, we would put in the required paperwork, knowing that the parent would just pull the child out of that school are register her/him in another. It took quite a while for the new school to figure out the problem and when they did, the parents would…. and so on.
Given the fear Cole is able to create , will the Staff at Mendez be three to four months in to the year before they figure out what is happening? and then what? will they, too, be intimidated into saying nothing when those he targets feel his wrath?
Apparently Workers’ Rights are set aside when it comes to “workers” in Public Schools.
Michelle Q ~ yes you may think that teachers are the “highest paid” but let’s be truthful considering all the tests we have to go through, the numerous classes we have to continue with so that we may keep our position add in our student loans we have to pay back. With the endless hours of preparing work and correcting it. Then you add in the calls we have to make to home because students aren’t showing up or not doing the required work. On top of then going to meetings nonstop and listening to people who like to hear themselves. then having to deal with parents who think we don’t like the student so that’s why they are failing. And with all the budget cuts we are also have to spend some of that “highest paid” teacher money to supplement the non-budget we have for supplies to try and make our students successful.
Oh yeah, WE are to blame for the low performing school. It couldn’t be from the fact that Willard’s classrooms are sectioned off by dividers or that the elementary school had no more room so they added the 6th grade to the already overpopulated school. On top of that the school is in one of the poorest neighborhoods so there is much gang activity and many of the parents and students worry about their next meal along with the housing, not about school.
I know that you may think that us teachers have it easy and that we just sit around reading our newspapers and playing solitaire. That is not true, we are trying to make these students succeed. This new era of student is very selfish, I don’t ever remember being this rude or disrespectful to my teacher. Students who tell you off when you hand them the work back or say that they are going to beat you up if you don’t shut up.
I may be tired of those students but yet they are the ones I love the most and want to help cause I know they want to learn. So it isn’t easy and though we may be the “highest paid” we have earned every cent and I am very proud to say that.
What Cole/SAUSD is doing is not only violating the 1st amendment, but the 14th as well which states, “No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law . . .”
Does anyone know if he is still pulling these stunts over at Mendez?
