The news programs today…are busy talking about mammograms and healthcare…..busy talking about what Sarah Palin might be going Rouge! Talking about how the deficit might affect things, talking about the lack of jobs in our society.
We never liked JFK. He was too slick….too charming, too family orientated, too rich, too eager to hire his own brother as Attorney General of the United States. Too eager to change things….too eager to make jokes and act too popular.
What can be said however, is that our society was busy going through some things that most of us did not want to face. Racism was a biggie, a sliding Economy, International tensions with the Soviet Empire….another. It did not take long for JFK to soon move beyond comments about his trendy wife Jacqueline Kennedy, his brother Teddy or his mom and dad! Soon we were busy talking about the Bay of Pigs! Soon we were talking about serious discussions on race and contentious issues with Governor Orville Faubus of Arkansas and and George Wallace of Alabama! Serious animosity against the Kennedy’s was developing with National undertones of undisclosed anger and jealousy.
Jack Anderson was an investigative reporter and along with his young staffer named Brit Hume……they were finding out things about the Kennedy’s….things about Marilyn Monroe….things about unreported social events with Frank Sinatra and members of the Mafia. No one paid much attention to it. They were more concerned with the riff between Attorney General Bobby Kennedy and FBI Chief….J. Edgar Hoover! The truth was, the Kennedy’s had no qualms about creating the news…either by deed or circumstance.
The Cuban Missile Crisis…at first seemed like a joke. It had to be a joke wasn’t it? How in the world could Fidel Castro and the Russians tie up to fight the United States of America and threaten to bomb us into the stone age? That was impossible wasn’t it? No, Robert Strange McNamara was one of those guys that just loved drama on the big scale of things.. This guy was definitely one of the most dangerous political advisors in American history. So, we almost all died in a hail of nuclear winters………..but we didn’t, thank goodness.
So, JFK was taken out. Who did it? Was it a conspiracy or merely an isolated guy called Lee Harvery Oswald, who left our country to go live in Russia during the 1950’s? A ex-Marine that married a Russian girl and then was allowed back into the United States without problem. A guy that visited with Russian agents in Mexico before the assassination. A guy that belonged to an odd-ball group called “Fair Play For Cuba”….a guy that was taken out after the assassination by some Mafia connected sleazy bar owner…..named Jack Ruby?
Whatever happened should not be forgotten. Whatever happened should be an example to all of us…..that our country needs constant observation and a constant overview. No matter what your opinion of JFK, the Kennedy’s or what caused this event…..our main concern is that we not forget the brutality and evil that man can do to his fellow man. We should never forget this event, and we need to always remember – all of it and its many complicated implications!!
