As President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee comes under heavy fire for allegedly being a “racist,” Judge Sonia Sotomayor is listed as a member of the National Council of La Raza, a group that’s promoted driver’s licenses for illegal aliens, amnesty programs, and no immigration law enforcement by local and state police.
According the American Bar Association, Sotomayor is a member of the NCLR, which bills itself as the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the U.S. Meaning “the Race,” La Raza also has connections to groups that advocate the separation of several southwestern states from the rest of America.
Over the past two days, Sotomayor has been heavily criticized for her racially charged statement: “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.” The remark was actually made during a 2001 speech at the University of California’s Berkeley School of Law. The lecture was published the following year in the Berkeley La Raza Law Journal.

My opinion is that her comment is not racist. She prefaces her comment with … I would hope that a wise Latina woman …” I too hope that a wise Latina, Black, Ethopian, French, Italian or Russian woman w/the richness of “her” experience would more often than not reach a better conculsion that a white male who “hasn’t lived that life.”
I believe Sotomayor is an excellent choice to replace Justice Souter.

Why should post 2 reverse the comment? Sotomayor was speaking from her personal experience.
“racist” by definition is:
-A belief that one’s race is superior and has the right to rule others.
-Hatred or intolerance of another race or races.
Sotomayor states, “the richness of her “Latina erperiences” and ” more often than not reach a better decision than a white male without that experience.
The comment dose not state race superiority. The comment refers to “Latina experience”. It also points out that a white male w/o the “Latina experience” can make a better decision.

Raza refers to Hispanic. These Hispanic groups are no different than Afro American, Italian , Irish, Asian ect. They are groups that advocate their group’s best interests. How can all these groups be defined as racists?

By your definition “these groups advocate their own best interests” is another way of saying seperatist. A concept based on racial/ethnic bias. If that works for you that’s your right, but then again you are not going to be making decisions that might effect my life either.
i don’t think she is qualified. She is only a twofer: a woman and a minority. She needs to also be lesbian and/or disabled to reach required threshold.

How do you know “Latina Experiences” translates to anti-gay and anti-abortion?
You will find out at the hearings, now you are just offering your perception.
Sotomayor and our President have strongly stated that the underlining decision for Sotomayor’s recommendation is her attention and history defending the rule of law.
Life experiences are used by all jurists including her in conjunction to applying the rule of law.

In regards to Sotomayor and the National Council of la Raza the “SLOGAN” has no relevance.
Sotomayor nor the National council of la Raza embrace the slogan used by a militant Hispanic group.The word Raza is not inherently evil. Groups having Raza in their name does not marry them to the la raza slogan. This is intellectually dishonest.
I understand your need to attach a “slogan” to Sotomayor but it is a silly undertaking.

La Raza (literally “The Race”) is sometimes used to denote people of Chicano (i.e. Mexican American) and Mexican descent and the Hispanic world, as well by mestizos who share Native American or national Hispanic heritage.
The term originated in the 1925 book La Raza Cósmica written by Mexican writer José Vasconcelos. He described La Raza Cosmica as the product of gradual racial mixing that was already underway in the Hispanic world. Vasconcelos believed that eventually all of the people within the Spanish Empire would be completely mixed into a new race.
Hispanic people all around the U.S. have also started using this term to identify themselves. Nonetheless, the term and idea associated with it have been mainly adopted by some Mexican people in the United States to express pride in their nation. In general usage, La Raza implies dignity and pride for these people regarding who they are and their places of origin.
Let’s not get sidetracked by looking at any candidate’s race, religion or ethnicity, especially as this pending appointment is for a lifetime.
I agree with Congressman John Boehner’s comments that “each nominee must undergo a rigorous examination–apply the law equally and impartially to all, rather than a record of judicial activism and legislating from the bench. I would only support a candidate who is committed to “interpreting the Constitution as it is written.”
