Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
This country has been so blessed for so long that it is populated with people who are almost entirely immune to any interest other than their own. The ability to almost immerse yourself in information that constantly and solely validates your point of view of the world also allows people to be supremely dishonest. Mostly with themselves. Understanding others is impossible.
I have been accused of inconsistency in the past. It usually comes from a narcissist so wrapped up in their own fantasy reality that if you don’t agree with them you’re a bigot, racist hatemonger intent on taking freedom and rights away from people or interested in sticking government into their bedroom. They don’t seem to get that I may agree with them in spirit, but how they arrived at that train station… well I took Amtrak, they took the Goodyear Blimp. Since I do come from the right side of the political spectrum (to the right of Genghis Khan… I heard it all) the last thing people on the right are interested in is interfering with other peoples private lives. Take it from me.
Bill Clinton.
The crux of the whole Monica Lewinsky thing for most guys wasn’t that he got caught having blow jobs. For chrissakes. What pissed most guys off was that he was stupid enough to start a national conversation about something that most guys secretly start to covet right around puberty. Oral stimulation doesn’t count as sex. Sorry ladies. Your man doesn’t think so.
And had he not gotten caught, most men, me too, would have argued: Balance the budget, healthy economy? Free blow job.
If our current CIC was getting blow jobs on the side for a balanced budget, where do you think we might be right now? Hmmmmmm?
But when people defend him for lying about it? When the American people have decided they have the right to know the shape of his ding-a-ling? This isn’t a person I would let out of the corner of my eye at a party. You think he can be trusted on other matters? THAT was the issue. And it SHOULD have mattered.
The salacious personal details were HIS screw up. He put the matter on the table. No one else. What, your guest takes a dump on the table and you’re not supposed to notice it?
How about abortion?
Now, abortion has always seemed to me to be a male issue. As a member of that species, I can express definitive polygamous attitudes earlier in life. What man doesn’t want to at least imagine a polygamous lifestyle where disease free sex has no repercussions?
Birth control is a mans issue and the little blue pill is a woman’s issue. Disagree? Really? You’re a woman. The little blue pill isn’t important TO YOU???
The whole thing is upside down. We’re having discussions with the wrong target audience. I am FOR allowing women an abortion. I just would never want my better half to do it.
Just don’t stand up and say “it’s in the Constitution”. Sorry. I can read.
State funded abortions are a “right”?
Open rear, insert Bill of Rights.
Want to put it there? I’m all for supporting your right to try. As I have said, I have a few Progressive additions to it, that’s all.
Gay marriage.
The issue is “does society have a right to set standards on marriage”?
People who argue FOR gay marriage argue that all these years they have been DENIED a so called right. There is no RIGHT to marriage. Its a privilege.
“Why shouldnt homosexuals get married? Why should they be the only couples who never have sex, argue what to watch on tv and walk around every day harboring a deep resentment and anger over years and years of real and imagined slights, real issues and what wallpaper to hang. In my view we should marry off every gay couple right now, and in 18 months most of them would go running back to court to end it.” Denis Leary – WHY WE SUCK
You can organize a church, in the land of freedom of religion, but if you want tax exempt status, you have to behave. No fiddling in public forums. But if you get a state approved marriage, with tax benefits, the state has NO right to tell you how to structure that marriage?
And when all is said and done, and the majority has had its say, that’s not the end of it. Sheesh.
Want to try again? Knock yourself out. Just make sure you’re speaking for EVERYONE’s right to define marriage. You’re not special.
Open rear, insert democracy.
In the final analysis, it has always seemed to me that the left of politics has made this country out to be less GREAT than it is. Less TOLERANT than it really is. Less of a GOOD IN THE WORLD than it really is. Don’t seek to be understood, as to understand. I get you. Doing it the correct way is a lot more difficult.
This is the greatest place on earth, even if we do worry about immigration and terrorism too much. The futures challenges aren’t going to come from the worlds losers, but its winners. We all need to pay attention.
Seek to understand, rather than be understood.
Rather odd to place the Prayer of St. Francis (my confirmation saint) and a fairly explicit description of Bill Clinton’s sexual escapade in the same post.
Thank you, God, for replacing GWBush with Barack Obama. Your divine intervention is accepted in this exceptional feat. Amen.
“A man is accepted into a church for what he believes and he is turned out for what he knows.”
— Samuel Clemens
Oh, and I have mentioned it to you before, O Lord… thank you for sparing the Democratic convention in Colorado from torrential rains, as was requested by James Dobson and his followers. Thank you, too for turning hurricane Ike away from the Republican convention, as was requested by your devoted follower, Michael Moore. Amen.
I had a similar thought, junior. This is one of my favorite prayers. I even have a St. Francis statue in my back yard. I was pleased, as always, to read this post until my peaceful image of the good man from Assisi started having to compete with images of people sodomizing themselves with important documents!
Thank you Lord for placing GW Bush in the Presidency during our time of trial rather than that dullard wind-bag Al Gore. Your foresight Lord has kept us safe from major terror attacks within our homeland for 7 years.
junior, ( I’m sure this was just an oversight on your part ) you forgot to mention; except of course for September 11th, which happened right after GW Bush’s month long vacation during which time ALL THE TERRORIST CHATTER LINES WERE BLINKING RED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope you’re happy at the sacrilege-fest you engendered, Crowley. Francis of Assisi (my confirmation saint) means something to a lot of us, and it’s sad to see his famous prayer abused by a narcissist seeking to let the world know he craves a blow job.
Harsh Vern!
Terry, interesting post. I agree with the sentiment in the prayer. I agree that the Clinton issue should have been the lie (it was the legal issue) and that despite popular opinion about politicians frequent lying, if we catch them at it they need to be removed from office (if they were lying to you then are they lying to you now? – you never know).
I think abortion is a different issue although I do acknowledge that a position on the issue could be influenced by what you cite. To me I am anti-abortion AND pro-choice. I look at it as a medical decision and believe the Government shouldnt get between a woman and her doctor. I also think an insurance company shouldnt get between a person and their doctor but thats a separate issue. So is the funding, and the right isnt to the funding, the right is to the freedom from interference by blue nosed hypocrites and religious fanatics who seek to impose their morality on others and come between a woman and her doctor.
As for marriage, why is the government involved at all if not to provide a method of marriage free from religious interference? Get the work marriage out of our laws altogether and have people get a certificate if they want government recognition of a religious or civil union. Let churches marry their members and stop making money off marriages to outsiders then they dont have to worry about discrimination charges when they refuse to marry someone they dont approve of. This will guarantee the civil benefits of marriage to all who seek them without damaging the religious unions (each can say their church’s marriages are the only ones that count).
Lastly, I flat out reject you contention that by criticizing our country we make it less great. There are legions of governments that punish criticism and our ability to vocalize it is exactly what makes our country great – that and the fact that we act on criticism to make the country a better place for everyone. That is what it means to be on the Left: working to make this a greater country every day.
Crowley’s posts are just making less and less sense lately. I think he is getting depressed and drinking too much, stuck in Modesto with nobody bookish to talk to, and convinced the country is going to hell in a handbasket. He should come down here for a visit now and then if he’s gonna be an OJ blogger.
“I have been accused of inconsistency in the past. It usually comes from a narcissist…”
I hope this isn’t a continuation of the ill-fated jabs at me like last week’s “some on this blog have condoned violence against churches” which also turned out to be directed at me and was total BS. I think Crowley thinks I called him “inconsistent” in last week’s comments. I would never call him inconsistent and I would rarely use inconsistent as an insult. It’s depressing though if he totally misunderstood our argument over the Emerson quote that he had misused.
..which was: “A foolish CONSISTENCY is the hobgoblin of little minds.”
Emerson was saying, and I agree, that consistency can be taken too far, and that life is too complicated to apply the same rules to every situation and every problem. If I would fault Crowley it would be for over-consistency, but I don’t want to say he has a little mind. He’s just confused sometimes.
It sure is fun watching this tennis match – back & forth, right & left, right & left. But, hey! what happened to OJB? Terry’s handling the entire right side of the court himself. Art, can’t you get him some help?
I can’t participate in this match – things you’re talkin’ about, I’d get fired for talkin’ about. I even have to wear a bag over my head just sittin’ in the bleachers.
Hey Teacher, being anonymous helps.

Re: removing the term marriage.
Start a 501(c)3 on this subject and you can count on me to be a contributor!
There is a critical difference between the Lefts criticism of this country and mine.
I believe this country can get better too.
I believe this country can run more effectively without confiscating income. It can tax wealth and business without taking the sweat of a persons brow before they ever see it.
I believe a vast majority of this country can stop acting like they’re guilty of something. Guilt feeds the ego. As soon as you feel overwhelmed by the idea that you have done harm to others or something else, the ego allows you to feel like others have done harm to you instead.
I believe this country can do better than find ways to control discussion because it offends, punish intent over action, and punish individualism for the sake of the collective.
I don’t attribute any of those things to anything other than misguided self-indulgent puriles to whom the world hasn’t changed in their eyes since they were eighteen.
I don’t discuss their intent, as a rule. Once I have identified them, I feel compelled occassionally to meet that person on their own field of battle. On those occassions, they are not given the benefit of good intentions.
Either way, the -ism’s used by the left to stifle debate ARE NOT indicative of constructive criticism. Rejection rejected.
Terry, your comment “I believe this country can run more effectively without confiscating income. It can tax wealth and business without taking the sweat of a persons brow before they ever see it.” is interesting to me because I’d never considered that their might be a better way of fairly raising money from the populace for the common good.
How would this work exactly and are there places where they tax wealth and business without a personal income tax?
“Once I have identified them, I feel compelled occasionally to meet that person on their own field of battle. On those occasions, they are not given the benefit of good intentions.” Sounds like you are fighting the good fight, I recognize those feelings in myself. Maybe we can fight on the same side one day. I think I’d learn a few things.
“Don’t seek to be understood, as to understand. I get you. Doing it the correct way is a lot more difficult.”
There is no “correct” way of understanding, and being understood.
Having said that, you’re doing one helluva job of being impossible to understand.
Anonyms,

Many nations have no income tax. But they are few and far between, and are usually characterized by the fact that they are tax havens for every place else. Dubai is an example. Imagine if the US became a tax haven for the world. Can you say INVESTMENT?

and I am much more at peace now that that does not concern me.
Terry,
I actually donated some money to Ron Paul in the primaries.
But it turns out he is just like any other politician, immediately spamming me for more money (politicians added an exception to the CAN-SPAM act, making their spamming legal, but it still isn’t welcome here…)
I lost a lot of respect for him because of his spamming.
As for income tax, Nevada has no state income tax, if I remember right. Didn’t help them much. Lots of foreclosed McMansions in the suburbs of Las Vegas…
Terry, interesting read on the tax issue. Here is one I cam across that might interest you although its not a tax issue.
Gas Hydrates on Alaska’s North Slope Hold One of Nation’s Largest Deposits of Technically Recoverable Natural Gas
Released: 11/12/2008 11:41:15 AM
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne and U.S. Geological Survey Director Mark Myers today released a USGS assessment estimating that there are 85.4 trillion cubic feet of undiscovered, technically recoverable gas from natural gas hydrates on the Alaskan North Slope. This would be enough natural gas to heat more than 100 million average homes for 10 years, according to current usage rates provided by the Energy Information Administration. However, further research, including long-term production tests, still is needed to demonstrate gas hydrates as an economically producible resource.
