All right. I vented several times on this BLOG. And I despair at the uncivil state of rhetoric. I, for one, do not HATE. I think people who cannot debate without debasing the values of their opponents are the truly malicious. Name calling is the last refuge of the scoundrel with a cold heart.
Now, I think, quite sincerely, that the subject on the table with Prop 8 is the abolition of marriage. You CANNOT allocate special rights to a single group of people and abrogate chosen rights for everyone else. A gay man may marry a woman just like me. And they have. I will not be entitled to marry a man. If I find it convenient, if it gets me more social benefits, more health care, etc… why might I not? Does no one realize the incentives this will raise to game the system by signing a piece of paper? These are not inconsequential details. And you cannot raise one objection if I find that I love MORE THAN ONE. Thats intolerant too. And then I’ll bring in the guy and his dolphin.
So I am going to advocate simply, here and now, for the abolition of marriage. Seriously.
Its simple. There are only three reasons, historically, why we have marriage anyway.
One is genetics. The second is social stability. And the third is economics. By the way, in case Vern missed it, the first two dont count anymore. So, instead of IGNORING all the CIVIL RIGHTS which are inconvenient to address at this juncture (and you would dare to consider yourself belonging in the company of slave abolitionists Vern? You sounded more like a Whig to me) let’s just jump right to where we’re going.
Let’s abolish the meaning of marriage altogether. No more marriage deductions. No more co-filing of tax forms. Everyones an individual. No more death benefits. Lets eliminate the economic benefits of marriage. Mandate a living will. When you go to the DMV, you can update it.
Does anyone care to make a coherent objection? Tell me what standard of marriage is WORTH adhering to and in so doing abrogating the rights of any minority group?
Two men getting married for the medical benefits? It’s called I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. Terry, you’re a genius. You should write Hollywood movies. 😉

With over 50% of heterosexual marriages ending in divorce, we’ve already seen the abolition of marriage. Your wish has been granted.
I thought that movie sucked. LOL
Could it be that everyone can not wear the same clothes?
Is that racism, unfair, discrimination?
Clothes need to be banned, separate bathrooms need to be banned, separate states need to be banned, separate nations need to be banned.
Everything that makes individuals difference, needs to be banned.
Everyone must be exactly the same in all respects, or they be banned.
I guess this question will be settled by tomorrow night.
Why in the F would I update my will at the DMV? You make no sense
5 Flowerzz, umm because after the socialism you fear has been enacted all you’ll have that your’s is a hybrid car. Oh and who were you responding to? One of those disappearing posts no doubt.
4 Cook, gays wear clothes too, all different sizes too. I submit that its discrimination that seeks to exclude some from the one size, one color set of clothes. People do wear differing sets of clothes and use gender specific bathrooms (except at my house apparently) that is not discrimination. Discrimination occurs when you tell one group they can’t wear clothes or use the bathroom. Your thinking is wrong-headed on this one.
Terry, I think you are a gentleman and a scholar, a credit to your family and political party, and a supremely nice guy who just happens to be soooo wrong. I hope you like civil discourse, you are NICE and WRONG. Happy now?
Anon –
I take a bow to you.
Anon @8:25 – I was reponding to the original post where it says that you will be renewing your will at the DMV….And I don’t own a hybrid car…what the hell why is everyone on this blog talking in riddles lately? LMAO! 😛
Flowerzz, oh, that’s very different. Nevermind.
I wish more people were talking about this. It takes some knowledge and understanding to get to this idea, but I really wish that we lived in a world where an idea like the abolition of marriage wasn’t so radical. It makes sense. Well, as long as someone who knows something about law and policy could find a feasible way to get people the rights (normally accorded by marriage) they need, like housing and health care and all the rest of it. But why is something that seems so clear to me so hard to talk about in this society?
