Wow, just look! So proud of my party for supporting John [sic] MacMurray, a nice guy even though his wife Ida MacMurray is the one running for La Habra City Council! And we’re also supporting La Habra City Council candidates Rose Espinoza and Jess Badillo, cool! And Sharon Quirk Silva and Josh Newman and even Gregg Fritchle — how nice for us in the frozen North! And Len Lahtinen — not my personal cup of tea, but at least he’s not Steve Lodge! So these seven candidates got a total of … just a sec … a total of $2,115 all combined! Not much, but of course we’re not made out of money, ya know!
I think I missed a few, Who’d I miss?
Oh — $5,220 to oppose Andrew Do, running for a full term for Supervisor against Santa Ana Councilwoman Michele Martinez. So its basically a contribution for Martinez. Well, OK, even though I’m not happy with what I read in the Voice of OC article about her. And, um, $5,021 apiece to oppose Cecilia Iglesias and Angie Cano, respectively on and running for the Santa Ana Unified School Board. So basically a contribution to Rigo Rodriguez, Alfonzo Alvarez, and Mark McLoughlin. Well, I do like them, even though the candidate I like more wasn’t endorsed.
Let’s see … it’s … it’s … $11,000 for unctuous carpetbagger Santa Ana City Council candidate Jose Solorio.
…
…
…
And, uh, that’s $26,262 for the, uh, Santa Ana, uh, candi — cand — … $11,000 …
[twitch]
WHAT THE HELL, DPOC?
Nah, just kiddin’ around! [twitch]
What pretty clearly happened — and if it’s not this then heads should roll down Chapman Ave. in Orange — is that someone who maxed out to these big-money candidates’ campaigns just decided to use the DPOC as a “bypass pipeline” to get some money into their campaigns. And they specified who would get the money — which I’m told they can do if it’s a “member-to-member communication” (material sent to party members), although if that’s not true then it’s strictly illegal. (Hope it’s true!)
This was one of the first things that I talked about during this four-year term for the DPOC members: that we should not let the DPOC exist as a mere pipeline for big donors to evade campaign finance laws. I’m not saying that it should never happen, under current law, so long as it’s legal — but that members should have some say about whether we want our reputation to be established as a group that happily channels $11,000 to Jose Solorio over three very good alternative candidates. Endorsing him? Well, I couldn’t stop that, despite trying. But making him into the fucking face of the party like this? That’s just bad for Democrats all over the County, because he will hang around our neck like an albatross. THIS is why Hillary Clinton can’t break away from the giant elephantiasis worm Donald Trump for President, because our party branding involves continually choosing a fangtooth fish as its local mascot.
If I were chair of the DPOC and someone came to me with a contribution — the small “overhead” (or “handling fee”) on which allows the DPOC to give out that $2,115 to seven different candidates — do you what I’d do? I’d say: “It’s also legal for you to engage in an independent expenditure, so why don’t you do that and leave our reputation out of it. Those seven candidates will have to do without their $303 each. It’ll be easier to raise money for them if people can’t call us the Solorio Party.”
Yes, this would be less efficient for the Jose Solorio campaign and whatever fundraiser takes a cut out of the money he raises — but we could hold our head considerably higher as Democrats.
But maybe that’s not what the Money Democrats in this party want! They want the bypass pipe. They want to help the Solorio Party, even if it’s at the expense of the rest of us.

Hey Greg,
Take Adam and Noberto’s balls out of your mouth for a minute and smell the fresh air dumbshit.
The VOICE OF OC is propoganda for who the OCEA wants, not who is best.
Your views commonly allign, but make NO MISTAKE, Nick’s seed clearly breeded Noberto. Don’t be the clean up boy.
Ask Zenger, he sidestepped that CXM fest for years.
To refuse judgement on Michele’s crimes, current and former is disengenuious. How about ONE OC?
Jordan is bad, but Michelle taking 20 DPOC Members on a junket is OK?
NO ON MICHELLE, NO ON ROMAN, NO ON JOSE AND A BIG FAT FUCKING NO ON TOM DALY
Just for the record, I don’t have anyone’s balls in my mouth, and if I did I have no idea how I’d get them both in there at once. I’m such a het naif, I guess!
My view on labor leaders is that they’re a lot like lawyers; they have clients and they argue a position. Some do it fairly and responsibly, others don’t. The VOC article on Michele that I read was not complimentary, which I have trouble reconciling with your position. As for “Nick’s seed ‘breeded’ Norberto” — I’m not sure what you’re trying to say there, but so long as it doesn’t involve Webb Hubbell I don’t think I need to.
As for Martinez vs. Do, I think that both have ethical problems and I think that either is a big step up from Janet. I think that Michelle will need to be watched closely in office, less because of what she wants to do than because of what her patrons will want her to do. Some politicians can survive that pressure, once they’re in a significant office like that, and some can’t.
I’m part of a political party central committee, and that does constrain what I can say if I want to retain that position. And I do want to stay, mostly because so many grotesques would like to see me leave. So I’m not going to say what you say in your last line. But I did not want either Jose or Tom to be endorsed by the party, for what that’s worth.
I’ll tell you one thing, though — I don’t think that their anti-union opponents on the right are (with perhaps rare exceptions) any better. If you do, then the problem between may be nto that I’m ssupposedly teabagging reporter, but that you and I just disagree.
I’d be interested in seeing who dropped 11k on DPOC to make it rain on Jose. I smell Poseidon in the air. Are finance disclosures available yet too shed light on that Greg?
I can assure any critic of DPOC that this is not what the rank and file would want or do as we do not condone carpet bagging of the nature that Jose is pulling here in the 3rd district. And we sure do not condone his using campaign funds to pay his rent. And we sure as hell to the nth degree condone his back door attempt to get on ocwd board by usurping Roman Reyna in this fashion so he can participate in the 50 year robbery known as Poseidon!
If Jose gets on the Water Board we will recall him. With great prejudice.
He would have to be recalled from his city council seat. The seat is given to a council member at the councils pleasure. You can’t recall an appointee from the ocwd board.
Fair point.
Maybe Solorio can use DPOCs money to pay his FPPC fine.
Hahahahahaha!
Except that it’s not funny. He probably could.
Article says he cannot use campaign funds for that
Sorry I meant the Vic article says he cannot use campaign funds for fines
Yeah, well, he can’t use campaign funds to pay his rent on his fake apartment either.
Watch him try.
Ha! I don’t think even Jose is bold enough to try that twice. To be honest I’m really surprised the FPPC actually took action and levied, by their usual standards, a significant penalty. The norm is for the FPPC to be a paper tiger.
