Stadium and tourism related ballot measures in neighboring San Diego, with similar connotations to the Angels/ Art Moreno- Pringle saga in Anaheim. (for BBRW files)

“I wonder if Charles Black is involved somehow,” he wondered, needlessly.

Yes, me and my wife the famous COUNCIL CANDIDATE from DISTRICT 5 were looking at that this morning. Think of how many of those would fit on the Karcher property, even for a couple years until they make Jordan’s dream sports complex. One more reason to vote: Daniels (or Fitzgerald); Moreno; Ferreras; and Acevedo-Nelson.
Top it off, this is in tiny Midway City. Did I ever tell you the thing I know about Midway City, which is how did it get its name?
It got its name because it is midway between Seal Beach and Santa Ana, which sounds random now, but was a big deal in the 19th century, when you had to have a place to stop midway between those towns to water your horses!
Back to our previously scheduled programming…
What the Karcher site needs is a complex of modular buildings set on asphalt; or maybe even just asphalt with utilities and some plastic utility buildings you can get at Home Depot. After winter is over, reassess the whole project. Cost? Maybe a hundred grand.
The pictures are pretty and I can’t possibly fault a private endeavor, but still I wonder about the sf cost. A lot (not all) of the above ground structural costs are being eliminated. The exterior looks pretty pricey.
Yeah but you don’t have to sell a project like this to an AIA panel, you sell it to a bunch of not very smart, not very forward thinking bureaucrats and nearby residents. If someone’s idea of cutting edge architecture is the local Panera, you’re probably going to respond well to a little bit of frosting.

SWEEET… http://www.fieldofschemes.com/2016/09/28/11639/exec-says-angels-could-leave-anaheim-in-2029-maybe-hopes-new-metropolis-has-arisen-by-then/
Los Angeles Angels president John Carpino spoke out about the over development rights to the team’s Anaheim stadium parking lot yesterday, and said if things can’t be worked out the team might just leave — 13 years from now.
Carpino spoke after the developer of a large-scale project next to Angel Stadium agreed Tuesday to postpone an Anaheim City Council vote on the project for three weeks, in the hope of resolving the team’s objections to the development…
Although the Angels’ current lease extends through 2029, the team can opt out no later than Oct. 16, 2018, which would terminate the lease after the 2019 season.
Carpino said the Angels have three options: move, renovate Angel Stadium, or play out the current lease.
So… that doesn’t actually quite make sense as written. What the Los Angeles Times’ Bill Shaikin appears to be trying to say is that the Angels may not use the opt-out clause in their lease in two seasons, in which case their next opportunity to leave Anaheim would be in 2029. It’s not entirely clear whether that’s meant to be a promise or a threat, but there it is.
Of course, the reason that Angels owner Arte Moreno might not use the opt-out clause is because he has nowhere to go that’s still in the super-lucrative Los Angeles (plus Orange County) market, especially since his attempts to get a stadium out of Tustin went nowhere. That’s not likely to change by 2029 — yeah, Las Vegas is growing, but not that fast — so this would seem to be a coded admission of “Yeah, we’re stuck here whether we like it or not, thanks to the SoCal cable riches.” I mean, maybe by 2029 cable has ceased to exist and some new MLB model makes it feasible for teams to play in places like Green Bay, like the NFL’s does? Maybe by then Halifax has become bustling with American climate refugees? Or maybe Moreno has really decided he’ll settle for selling another 13 years worth of Mike Trout jerseys and figure out the whole stadium thing later. If so, well played, Tom Tait.
“It’s not entirely clear whether that’s meant to be a promise or a threat, but there it is.”
No, it’s pretty clear. Just another threat from Arte to the citizens who have provided a damn good venue for his team for over 50 years.
Yeah: “move” means “exercise the option extension granted to the Angels in exchange for nothing of value by the Council Majority (plus Eastman).”
Maybe they can start by paying the value required to repair the stadium, as the Current Lease requires them to have done, and then the City can (and would and should) address the cost of renovations beyond that. That would probably be fair. No wonder Capriano didn’t mention it.
Zenger, would I be right to suppose that they’re trying to push this past the time that at least absentee votes — largely from Tait-friendly Anaheim Hills — will have been cast? Voters who vote early should simply presume that they will do whatever is worst.
