Attend a Vigil TODAY or Thurs. at 6 pm for Three Promising Young Muslim Collegians Executed by a Cowardly Gunman

Muslim Students and Their Murderer

Self-appointed Ubermensch Craig Hicks and the three victims of his misplaced murderous rage.

I am planning a longer post on this topic, but I want to get out the word right now about two 6:00 p.m. vigils to be held for the three promising and idealistic young Muslims college and graduate students killed yesterday in an execution-style murder in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  The first will take place tonight at Cal State Fullerton800 North State College Boulevard, Fullerton, CA 92831, east of the Titan Bookstore.  Tomorrow’s will be held at the corner of Barranca and Jamboree at the corner of Barranca and Jamboree in Irvine, 92606.

For now, having just found out about the Fullerton vigil starting in about an hour as I write, I’m going to just post something that I wrote for Facebook this afternoon:

I would like to focus on the victims of yesterday’s heinous act.  I hesitate to focus on their cowardly murderer as well — but he seems to be a slightly unusual type of politically driven wacko, and some of what does and doesn’t make him different is worth note.

(1) He hated all sorts of religions and apparently oppressive political movements of various stripes.

(2) He loved guns in a fetishistic way.

(3) Put those together and you have the potential for violence.

(4) But — and I don’t consider this an accident — when his rage finally erupted it was NOT at the Christian right (which is quite powerful in North Carolina) or at Jews or at Mitt Romney-style predatory capitalists or even at Muslims who were calling for support of jihadist violence.

It was at a tall young dental student and two women right around 20 — his wife and her sister — both in identifiably Muslim modest dress, and meek enough that we was able to shoot each of them in the head.

For all of his pumped up rage, he chose to murder mostly defenseless members of a largely publicly reviled minority group — the easiest possible target. Let’s remember of him, foremost, as being a coward. All that firepower for a coward who picked targets that even his twisted political belief system could not have justified — because they were relatively safe to murder.

We live in a society now where the most admirable young Muslims are the easiest prey for cowardly hunters like this — and we had better not leave those targets to fend for themselves. The ring of public condemnation must be loud and relentless and must come from every quarter, because these are OUR Americans, OUR sons and daughters, that this coward killed.

I hope to see some of you at one or both of the vigils.

About Greg Diamond

Somewhat verbose attorney, semi-disabled and semi-retired, residing in northwest Brea. Occasionally ran for office against jerks who otherwise would have gonr unopposed. Got 45% of the vote against Bob Huff for State Senate in 2012; Josh Newman then won the seat in 2016. In 2014 became the first attorney to challenge OCDA Tony Rackauckas since 2002; Todd Spitzer then won that seat in 2018. Every time he's run against some rotten incumbent, the *next* person to challenge them wins! He's OK with that. Corrupt party hacks hate him. He's OK with that too. He does advise some local campaigns informally and (so far) without compensation. (If that last bit changes, he will declare the interest.) His daughter is a professional campaign treasurer. He doesn't usually know whom she and her firm represent. Whether they do so never influences his endorsements or coverage. (He does have his own strong opinions.) But when he does check campaign finance forms, he is often happily surprised to learn that good candidates he respects often DO hire her firm. (Maybe bad ones are scared off by his relationship with her, but they needn't be.)
