JULY 4 Protest Thread: Huntington Park Shows the Way for OC! (Update: and Now LA!)

FIRST, from our friends at No Kings:

Don’t feel like celebrating our nation’s birthday while ICE kidnaps your neighbors and fascists take over our government? [They could have added: while Trump signs the Republican / Project 2025 Megabill that decimates our Medicaid and clean energy industry while blowing up the size of ICE to bigger than the FBI, funneling billions to America’s needy billionaires, and increasing our debt/deficit to over THREE-TO-FOUR TRILLION?]

Get out and protest and support your community instead. There are three things happening on the 4th of July we hope you can support, either by promoting on your socials/to your networks and/or by attending yourselves! We’re providing all the links to make it easy for you to share with your friends. The first link in each group is the Mobilize event page where folks who aren’t on social media can find all the details and optionally sign up – use that link in texts and emails.

1. Mel from Voices of Orange & Villa Park is hosting his weekly rally at the corner of E Katella/Villa Park Rd & N Wanda Rd from 8:30-10am. He’ll have Red Cards and stickers for you to kick off your day.

2. 50501oc & OC Indivisible Coalition are having a sign-wave & food drive to support those affected by ICE raids from 10-11:30am at Irvine Blv. & Jamboree Rd. It’s on our socials @50501oc & @ocindivisible

3. We are partnering with Lavender Dems to protest the occupation of our county by our own military and the illegal kidnappings of our immigrant neighbors. Meet outside the base where the Guard and ICE are bunking in Los Al from 12:30-2pm.

Bonus: Get out tonight to the new Lake Forest weekly protest at El Toro & Trabuco, 5:30-7:30pm.

And there’s Aliso Viejo on Saturday 11am-12:30pm, and Irvine on Sunday 2-4pm.

Find all our weekly protests on the Indivisible CA 40 linktree.

See you this weekend!

Huntington Park’s Police VET alleged ICE agents:

Let’s do that in OC!

This was gonna be its own story, but… excuse excuse. In short, what little Huntington Park started doing last week is something we should do here in Anaheim and Santa Ana. A little background a lot of which you probably know:

Over a hundred folks in OC (as of last month) have been arrested by ICE, that we know of, and more get taken every day. Sometimes it takes weeks to locate them. It’s assumed that it’s usually ICE, but the “agents” notoriously wear masks, drive unmarked vehicles sometimes with no license plates, answer no questions, and show no warrants. Their bosses (up to the top) lie like they breathe and claim they know who they are looking for and that it’s just folks with criminal records, but we’ve usually seen them just rounding up anyone who looks brown, on the street and their workplaces, asking no questions. AND NOBODY WITH EVEN A BRAIN STEM STILL BELIEVES THIS IS ABOUT CRIMINALS.

And as long as this has been going on – since February – there’ve been criminals taking advantage of the situation, impersonating ICE agents and grabbing Latino women and others off the street. For whatever nefarious purpose they may have. As many confirmed reports we have of this happening, there must be many more we don’t hear about. Our federal government doesn’t care; for them the terror in the immigrant community is the point.

But we live in a sanctuary state, with sanctuary (and “welcoming”) cities, and OUR law enforcement should be protecting all our residents (without running the legal risk of “obstructing” what Trump’s thugs are doing.) So what CAN OC police forces do?

Well, Huntington Park, a small city the size of Placentia a couple towns south of LA, nearly 100% Latino, has taken more than their share of abuse from ICE and “ICE.” Ghoulish Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem showed up for photo-ops at a brutal but failed raid on a pregnant woman’s home 3 weeks ago, and more recently ICE blew the doors off a home with a woman and her small children inside, apparently looking for her husband who had had an accidental collision with one of their vans a few weeks before.

Well, here’s what Huntington Park is doing about this, under the leadership of Mayor Arturo Flores – as of June 25 they’ve instructed their police force to at least make an effort to identify who these assailants are. Here is their June 25 council material with relevant stuff starting at page 322, some excerpts:

A little preamble at p. 322:

The residents of Huntington Park have experienced a surge of federal activity in recent weeks which have negatively impacted the health, safety and well-being of our community. As a result of militant like acts perpetrated by the federal government, members of the Huntington Park City Council have expressed an urgent desire to take action and protect the community from the unconstitutional overreach of the federal government.

Reports have been received of unmarked federal vehicles, with no license plates displayed, roaming the City and snatching people without the presentation of a warrant, identification as federal agents, or any notification as to the justification of their actions. This in turn has caused great alarm and distress in our community.

Among the different actions being taken by the City of Huntington Park, this ordinance would codify the City’s policy regarding interactions with federal agencies as it relates to immigration enforcement. This ordinance aligns with SB 54, known as the California Values Act, which seeks to protect members of the community from unconstitutional acts being perpetrated by the federal government and limits the situations in which cities can assist or engage with federal agencies on immigration issues…

From p. 330, Section 7. Compliance Monitoring and Public Records:

A. The City shall document in writing all requests for assistance from Immigration Authorities, including but not limited to requests for immigration detainers, transfers, interviews, interrogations, notifications, or non-publicly available information about any individual. The documented requests shall include the date, name of the requesting party, title, agency, nature of the information or assistance sought, the legal basis asserted for the request, and the response to the request…

From the June 25 resolution at page 336 (skipping whereases, here’s p. 338):

Directive for Local Monitoring and Verification: The City directs the Huntington Park Police Department to monitor any suspected federal enforcement activity in the City and, when legally permissible, confirm the identity and legitimacy of individuals claiming to act as federal agents.

Civil Rights Documentation and Reporting: HPPD shall document and report all incidents where suspected federal enforcement activity involves questionable conduct, and refer possible civil rights violations to appropriate legal and oversight authorities…

And guess what? The next day, the Huntington Park Police actually caught some sick asshole impersonating ICE. Told you! Did you read about that? Well, Anaheim, Santa Ana? We can at least do what little Huntington Park has managed!

UPDATE July 5: Now Los Angeles is doing the same – LAPD checking on the identification etc. of purported ICE raiders. From “The Fucking News”

Okay, one more immigration update. The Los Angeles Police Department — which, let us not forget, is responsible for some of the worst violence against protesters and is also so notorious that every one of you Newsfuckers had a visceral reaction to the phrase “The Los Angeles Police Department” — is now doing a good thing. Newsworthy, eh?!? When they’re called to apparent immigration encounters, the LAPD is now required to have federal agents identify themselves and present credentials so the LAPD can record those credentials on their body cams. Presumably so we know exactly who to prosecute once we put this bullshit in the rear-view mirror. (h/t)

IT’S TIME ANAHEIM! And Santa Ana!
