This weekend’s open thread comes from our favorite OC Congressional candidate Derek Tran, who’s running against the awful Michelle Steel in the 45th district.
Good morning,
This Mother’s Day, I want to share a story about the bravest person I know: My mother.
My mom grew up in Vietnam – and when Vietnam fell under a Communist regime, she bravely chose to escape the only life she knew and start over in America, in the hope of giving me a better life.
My parents worked incredibly hard and were able to open a corner market. Growing up, I was able to see the sacrifices of immigrants, the challenges of small business ownership, and despite the struggles, my mother’s steadfast determination and belief in the American Dream.
My mother’s love for America and her bravery are what inspired me to join the military, study law, and run for Congress. She, along with my incredible wife, Michelle, inspire me to be a better person, a better parent, and a better American everyday.
So to all the mothers out there in Orange County and across the country: Happy Mother’s Day.
– Derek

Made this video of the tenth & last song from my “Songs of the OC Homeless” – this one about Kelly Thomas. We’ll be doing it with better singers and more instruments on June 22.
Vern, you out did your own self channeling Kelly Thomas’ ghost.
Thanks, best compliment yet.
What was Melamet Rafiei’s sentence?
It is the perpetual blue balls of justice around these parts. Sidhu’s sentencing put off to December, Melahat’s to November. We all tell ourselves, “They must be talking more.” But we need to see some real consequences!
Sounds to me like they are — for the political reasons of the people being sentenced that is unfortunately being tolerated — stalling until after the election so that people who are going to have sudden problems can get re-elected first. If so, it’s Trumpian-level shameful.
