Back in August, I gave up on waiting for cities to publish their lists of candidates who would be on the ballot this fall. This asymmetry of information between insiders and outsiders about who has filed for offices, who is running — things that people running for office really want to know, and to know without having to physically walk into the officer of the City Clerk who is not answering the phone, if they aren’t fortunate enough to have inside connections who can give them the information — is completely absurd and, I suspect, illegal. I’m leaving that previous post up rather than revising it, meaning that now I can copy every single relevant bit of it, text block by text block, by hand.
Having given up on the cities, I’m now using the full candidate list put out by the Registrar of Voters, dated Thursday, Sept. 8, that now includes all City Council (and other State executive) candidates.
This post does not contain our endorsements, which are wordy; it is simply the scorecard from which those endorsements will be made. Sometimes we may give you a broad or subtle hint below about our likely thinking — but it’s not an endorsement until we say it is! (Note: as this is published, we haven’t finished dropping hints, so don’t be bereft if you’re not included.)
The “i” listed after a name (and after party affiliation, for partisan offices) means “incumbent,” “ai” means “appointed,” “qi” means “quasi” (they may be a member of the board, not in this precisely new redrawn district — something that comes up after redistricting and initial districting.) What “aqi” means is left as an exercise for our readers.) Some people I listed as “qi” may be entitled to “i” if their districts haven’t changed — and guess who doesn’t care about that?

Hi Greg,
Love that you have these write ups. I know that not all races have endorsements yet, but I’d love to communicate by email and talk about my campaign for South Orange County Community College if you’re looking to endorse in most races. I’m glad you endorsed Terri in the other contest, she’s the correct choice in that race.
The important thing about Terri is that she’s not Derek Reeve. I’m going to read up on both you and your opponent. I don’t want to prejudge them.
We do have good SJC friends I trust. From left and right….
Of course! I didn’t expect a free lunch and am just happy for the consideration. My opponent’s campaign doesn’t have much of an online presence outside of running Facebook ads and a simple website, so finding info on his is a little difficult.
I was happy to have received your endorsement last cycle, and hope to have it again.
Fire ’em up — and those in others areas as well! I’ll do the same.
I want our full endorsements — regular and abbreviated lists — out on Monday!
You haven’t endorsed me and Payal for Aliso Viejo city council? SMH
It’s coming! Read the intro, these are not the endorsements! But OK, OK — I will now broadly signal our intention to endorse Payal. (We certainly won’t forget to endorse you later.)
Tiffany you should think a little more about endorsing Farrah.
Unless you don’t have a choice.
Well, I’m endorsing Tiffany either way, though I’m for Branda Lin for Irvine Mayor over Farrah for more reasons than I’m likely to be able to express.
*So….we do support Mike Levin, John Moorlach and Zhen Wu (he actually came by to introduce himself ). Thanks of course to the Great one, Doctor Diamond for the good work on the piano! We do know that we need some suggestions on the Statewide Initiatives. Lots of Yes means No this year. We will listen to anyone’s opinion, so please step up and make your choices known.
Yes, hurry please – I need help figuring some of this out.
P.S. Winships: Please say more re: “Lots of Yes means No this year”….
He’s talking about ballot measures. Though that’s usually a problem with referenda, which I don’t recall our having this year.
Ask Cottie Petrie Norris why she give award to James Mai even after it was common knowledge he vandalize Hindu owned eatery.
#CottieRewardsHateCrime
Two things, Raju:
I’ve been in the middle of this, but even I don’t know that James Mai vandalized a Hindu-owned Indian restaurant.
I believe, based upon what I think is good clear evidence, that he publicly and privately claimed to have done so, and that later he justified his purpose for having made that claim. And I consider that to be bad enough — and likely a hate crime in itself!
Cottie almost certainly did not know about that, and was probably acting (likely on staff recommendation) on the basis that his organization’s name represents him as opposing Anti-Asian Hate. (Ironic, I know.)
Should Cottie retract that award? Well, that’s a big deal — and requires a lot of investigation — and credibility assessments — to justify it. The main witnesses against him, are involved with SHAME HATE, along with (to various extents myself and Mrs. Cameron and some LA County Hindu women and some OC Hindu women — all of whose beliefs are based on what Mrs. Cameron produced (and which evidence I consider credible.)
You guys know that I disagree with you about Indian politics, but in Orange County politics your hearts seem to be in the right place. But I’ve told you before, you are your own worst enemies when it comes to how to proceeding with this matter. Bludgeoning politicians until they give in, as you seem prone to do, is just not a good political strategy. Cottie is not going to want to talk to you right now — and I can’t blame her one bit, because you come off — no offense intended, but I’m just being real — as political extortionists.
Even agreeing with you about James Mai, I do not believe that Cottie’s opponent would treat you any better than she has, and I suspect you’d get worse treatment from him. Ask Steve Choi himself if he will fully champion your cause right now; I’ll bet that you get a weasely, equivocal answer. And I don’t blame him for that either, because investigations into credibility take time!
I’ll let you personally continue this discussion here, at least for a while, but I really don’t want to let this blog become “all James Mai, all the time” with less than a month before the election — because most readers really aren’t interested in this. I hope that, after the election, that may change.
Thanks Greg and Vern. Your information at election time has been an essential part of my voting prep for a lot of years now. I always have trouble with the judicial races and wonder if you will be doing endorsements for those races also. I’m especially interested in the candidates political persuasion as I have sworn off our loyal opposition for good finally and even in races locally where I favor the incumbent over a more liberal challenger I am unable to vote for him because of his affiliation. I hope you will indicate their affiliation when you endorse even though the races themselves are non partisan. Apparently the candidates from the other side of the aisle are unable to think of themselves that way.
Retain all of the judges. If there’s a serious movement to get rid of a judge, you’ll hear about it, and only then do you need to think about it. Abstaining is also reasonable, but then you cede the decision to the fanatics.
I just love that seemingly every election cycle in the primary, I am presented with a good-for-nothing 100% conservative Republican, versus a moderate do-nothing Democrat, that will never dare do anything to fight the status quo, and nothing ever changes and nothing gets done that actually helps any families in my community.
For me, this time around, it is Cottie versus Choi.
Cottie was forceful in her NOT supporting AB1400, which would have set California on a path for CalCare full coverage healthcare for ALL. Petrie-Norris has a F from the CA Courage Campaign, joined with fellow “Dems” from OC, SQS gets a F, and Tom Daly gets a F and a score of zero (https://couragescore.org/representative/cottie-petrie-norris/) Why continue to vote for these do-nothing Dem Politicians, when we can actually FIGHT for real Progressives.
Don’t vote BLUE. Vote for real Blue Progressives in 2024 Primary. Cottie does NOT have my vote.
Luis
First, my philosophy is that you vote for the best that you can get from the district. As with Sharon over the past decade, someone like Cottie is the best that you’re going to get the people from that district to elect.
As for AB 1400 — Newsom flat out lied to her and others, convincing them that if they let 1400 die before getting to his desk (and had to veto it), he would have something much better in (as I recall) his “May Revise” Budget. What he came up with was weak baby poop, but I can’t blame Cottie for having trusted him. Newsom is one of the biggest problems that we have in the state: lying, manipulative, and HATES anyone who might cost him corporate contributions.
